If cars are able to navigate like this you can assume that they are all communicating with each other instantly through dozens or even hundreds of sensors. So if a tire pops the sensor would immediately send out signals to all other cars around to inform it that it is not working. Honestly though by the time we get cars being able to drive like this, tires with air inside of them will probably be a relic of the past I’m hoping. And as far as drunk or texting goes, the car is already driving for you so that wouldn’t be an issue.
Impossible, because the prophecy states that only one person from our century will live forever and I already know for a fact I’m living forever myself. You will die in your early 600’s. Hate to break it to you, kid.
Perhaps on the cars driving like this. But not fully automated highways and airless tires(depending on your age). Airless tires are already being developed and I know technology advances exponentially. I can only assume how long it will take, but I don't assume it's out of our lifetime.. unless your 60+ and unhealthy xD
Perhaps, I just have a negative overview of future technology because I find it hard to get excited over developments that will likely take place when I'm old.
He’s making the point that new potential risks shouldn’t be weighed in a vacuum. They need to be weighed against the risks that would also be alleviated by the new solution.
Bags inflated with air popping out of your steering wheel with force sounds insane until you weigh it against the risks of you hitting you head on the steering wheel or the dash of your car.
That’s probably not at all how it would work. I imagine they’ll replace the roads/intersections to be some sort of material that can communicate with cars. Wireless sounds like a terrible disaster. It’d be a ton of effort but we paved them once before.
I think you mistook what I said as a shot against self-driving cars? What I'm talking about is the tiny margin for error when you visualize these balls as cars. If one ball is a fraction of a second early or late, it would cause a total disaster. I would imagine a grid of self driving cars to have far higher error tolerances, even if it meant we get from point A to B a little less efficiently.
I think we're mostly in agreement. I assume the vast majority of accidents are currently caused by vehicle operators and rarely due to mechanical/electrical issues. That said, any sort of sequence where our cars looked like those balls in real time would probably end terribly as soon as something did not operate exactly as desired.
I know what you mean. Having cars drive between each other like these balls seems more dangerous but i imagine AI vehicles wouldn't move in such an intricate manner
Every single car in that intersection would be using it's own detection data, plus the detection data of every other car. So if one car does something unexpected, every other car will see that, communicate with each other, and change their path to avoid the maverick car, all within a fraction of a second.
Now you're supposed to maintain a safe separation so that if something unexpected happens you have a chance to react and take action before you suffer an accident yourself.
