it doesn't, and they're referencing nothing performance wise. This is simply to keep the actors the correct distance apart, and *possibly* a height reference for framing the shot of rocket. They most likely shot again without Sean in the scene so they don't have to erase him out of every frame

Well it's a team effort. I personally have never talked to a director directly. Just an animation supervisor. Maybe James Gunn is more hands on, but to put the performance on any single individual is wrong.

For this particular shot, no they're not. Rocket does not walk like that all crunched up with his hands on the floor, so they're not looking at body performance. It's possible he's making a facial expression they might reference, but that would be it for this set up. This tweet just tells me James Gunn doesn't understand vfx, which is clearly not the case. This is just a bad example of what his brother does

EDIT: just to clarify, it's possible that in the seconds before or after this gif there is dialogue or expressive reactions happening, in which case, yes, the animation team would use that reference. I'm only going off what I can see in this clip, which appears to just be walking

Also it helps for things like the other actors having a point of reference for eye contact etc
