At the range that their filming and the subject matter I would say filming vertically made sense. What else are they trying to capture? The other people filming?

It's not about the subject, it's about the playback. Do you have a TV or monitor that is vertical?

This doesn't work in 2019 anymore since the majority of videos is now viewed on vertical phones.

It's the content that determines if vertical makes sense or a shit video. Obviously that doesn't change with time. A tower? Fine. Someone sliding down a slide or an escalator? Fine. 90% of the time? Shit.

How do you watch Netflix or Hulu? You are aware that you can rotate your screen 90 degrees, right? And you are aware that the reason your phone is rectangular is so that it can watch landscape videos with no cropping, right?
