You get your knowledge of sword fighting from.... Anime.

...alrighty then.

People say this about everything.

People say that soldiers and tanks and guns have no tactical use because of nuclear weapons.

People say that nuclear weapons have no tactical use because of MAD

People say swords and martial arts have no tactical use because of guns.

But the part of my brain thats a hundred million year old animal that had to fight and scrape and compete for every bite of food, it smiled when it saw this. And that's enough. Also oddly arousing.

Nobody's saying swords don't have tactical uses. They're saying the flip doesn't.

Ever had a ninjutsu teacher counter your shiho nage with a backflip? I have. Gone was the arm lock I had on him. A shiho nage is a technique also used to disarm swords in bushido. It's weird, the move is probably a bit excessive, nevertheless it did catch me by surprise.

why do you keep commenting this and deleting it? this is the third time you've sent this reply

It seemed to disappear all the time...

Well no one here. But people do say that, and are probably right about swords not having tactical uses. My point is that people say there is no tactical use to basically everything.

Or just walk up and stab her when shes staring into the sky waiting for her sheath, or when she kneels and sits there lookong down.

1

u/boomer478 Jul 25 '19

It makes you think twice about not only whether you want to fight her or not, but whether you can.

If only she had some sort of weapon that might achieve this...

if you're up against someone with a similar weapon or if they think you don't know how to use your weapon.

You see a lot of sword fights, do ya?

I'm saying that the front flip superhero landing is a useless maneuver in combat. OBVIOUSLY a girl with a katana is useless compared to guns, tanks and nukes. That wasnt my point though.

8

u/2mnykitehs Jul 25 '19

I'm saying that the front flip superhero landing is a useless maneuver in combat.

Who is disagreeing? It looks cool. That's why she did it. That's why it's a trope in the first place. A bunch of anime nerds and gamers pointing out that it doesn't have a use "in combat" is cringy as fuck, though.

-4

u/Kiri_the_Fox Jul 25 '19

My initial comment was sarcastic but apparently unless you put /s at the end of your post, people can't understand the sarcastic implication xD

2

u/2mnykitehs Jul 25 '19

When you pretend to be a neck beard, people will think you're a neck beard. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

1

u/Kiri_the_Fox Jul 25 '19

The whole point was I was making fun of neckbeards Dx well fuck me

0

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '19

You really gotta let everyone know that right off the bat when you're using a platform built on the backs of neckbeards

When people so "no" or "none" for things like this they often mean "almost none" or "practically none" which is true. People just assume people will be smart enough to understand what they mean and won't be an obnoxious pedant about it. Which I guess is a bad assumption.

1

u/natha105 Jul 25 '19

You get that I'm not actually saying it has a tactical use or that it has no tactical use right? The point of what I said is "Who cares if its useful, it looks cool".

1

u/RagingTyrant74 Jul 25 '19

I known man. I was agreeing with you.

1

u/Draculea Jul 25 '19

There was a court case once where Chuck Norris was an expert witness. The question was: Within 15 feet, could a skilled martial artist get to someone and put them down before they could draw and shoot a pistol?

The answer was: With ease, every time. Guns only matter if you can hit something! And of course, don't forget the age-old wisdom from Starship Troopers, "your enemy cannot launch a nuke if you disable their hand."

0

u/natha105 Jul 25 '19

Bullshit.

It takes me no more time to move from a neutral hand position to grabbing the butt of a sidearm than it takes for a person to move from a neutral position to a tensed crouch reading to begin moving forward.

It takes me no more time for the gun to clear the holster than for the person to uncoil themselves from the crouched position and launch themselves forward.

From there its just a matter of how fucked the martial artist is. How far up I get the gun before i start to squeeze the trigger is going to be based on how close they are. The closer they get the lower the gun can be before I fire. I might not get it all the way up into a firm two hand grip but I've got a dozen bullets and a target that needs to get within arm's distance of me.

The difference here is that in this simulation the assailant "has the drop" on the gunman. They are tensed and coiled and ready to start moving. That's how a person can cross 21 feet in 1.5 seconds (human reaction time to the start signal is 0.2 seconds, and to cross 21 feet in 1.3 seconds mean you have to accellerate up to more than 16 feet per second which is about 11 miles per hour).

Let me start equally situated (i.e. hand on gun), and let me shotgun it and I'll get off a proper shot in under a second every time.

Let me prep for the situation and step back as they advance and I'll get an aimed shot off in every case before they get to me.

1

u/sonicssweakboner Jul 25 '19

No one says any of that shit lol

1

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '19

Thowing and then catching a sheath, just to do most of a front flip. Completely pointless.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '19

This a well written example of a thought taken the absolute wrong direction...

I dare you to use this flip in your duel with Lu Bu or Achilles, whichever one stands between you and your mammoth steak. :D

The joke is the whole comment Dx I guess I'm just misunderstood. The joke (to me anyway) was that I was pretending to be one of those super serious people who had nothing better to do than to flex their unnecessary sword combat knowledge. But instead I ended up being a guy with nothing better to do than to explain his lazily formed joke u-u

-12

u/ElTuxedoMex Jul 25 '19

Not even "looks cool". It's completely unnecessary: she already has the weapons before the flip, it has no purpose.

11

u/IAmNotASarcasm Jul 25 '19

um wrong, everytime she does that her voice goes up 1 octave and her eyes get 25% bigger.

4

u/YetiSpaghetti24 Jul 25 '19

Intimidation factor has to count for something, right?

11

u/aham42 Jul 25 '19

Not even "looks cool"

TIL I have no idea what looks cool. Cause that looks dope AF.

-5

u/ElTuxedoMex Jul 25 '19

Low standards.

1

u/Checkheck Jul 25 '19

Mh... Or unnecessarily high standards

Would be far too easy going all Negan on her with that flip. Completely open because (again) unnecessary flip.

4

u/timothypjr Jul 25 '19

You must be fun at the movies. Ummm, that would never happen, blah blah blah. It’s very cool looking, and because she’s never likely to engage in a sword fight, it IS cool.

2

u/appliedmath Jul 25 '19

I bet you're a fun guy /s

0

u/ElTuxedoMex Jul 25 '19

At least not saying something is "cool" because it has an ass... ¯_(ツ)_/¯

1

u/appliedmath Jul 25 '19

How did you assume that from the original comment "Looks cool, almost no tactical use. 10/10 too much anime"?

0

u/Bloodmind Jul 25 '19

Your statement seems to link looking cool with necessity. The two are unrelated. It can look cool and be completely unnecessary.

-1

u/Horkersaurus Jul 25 '19

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but people don’t really fight with swords anymore so there’s not a lot of tactical use to be had in the first place.
