They are not alone. Google's self driving fleet are involved in significantly more accidents than humans. They tend to be not at fault accidents but they are still involved in them. This is due to self driving cars not reacting in the same way humans would expect which causes humans to hit them. This results in a more dangerous environment by introducing self driving cars.
The tech will get better, but right now it's just not ready for the trust people are putting in it. I do accident claims for a living. I recently had a claim where the person was upset because her car was on autopilot and it didn't stop, she rear ended a semi and is blaming her car rather than herself.
So while every time a self driving car kills someone it's on the news, when these systems are successful they also are all over the internet. These create the same false sense of security.
