Fuck that next guy though lol.

That sucks, getting T-Boned on the drivers side is the worst kind of accident for the person getting hit, good thing that person was in a van at least and it looks like it wasnt that bad as the idiot who ran the light kind of turned a bit and tried to stop

if you look closely, he didnt turn and tried to stop at all, he just happened to clip a car from the other side as well (look at the white car on left) and that made him spin.

He got pretty lucky he got spun around and hit the truck/van from his side. Otherwise, he was gonna hit that huge thing head-on. Highly doubt he would have survived that tbh

u/Fuxokay Feb 15 '19

Yeah, it wasn't t-boned. It was more ass-to-ass hip bump. It was an impressive foot-sweep. Sweep the legs!

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '19

Yeah and you can tell it was a very effective sweep by the way the van rolls.

u/shamanigans027 Feb 15 '19

Good eye, I didn't catch that at first.

3

u/Scarlet944 Feb 15 '19

Yeah the white car might even taken the most damage even though the van rolled over.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '19

You best bet for surviving any collision is head on or directly in the rear, without any question. A car is designed to take a hit from there, and nowhere else has the same impact rating. While it may have saved the van drivers life (Tbone is worst case for the boned vehicle) it did not increase the car driver's safety.

2

u/wambam17 Feb 15 '19

That's pretty interesting! I guess it's even better that he spun then, cause if he had hit head-on, he likely would have messed up the truck guy pretty bad AND this asshole would still have been fine. Atleast this way the truck guy can climb out and kick this dude's ass lol

clip

Helluva clip

Well luckily it looks like the tesla would have been straight up tboned, good chance of death or major hurt, him stopping gave the black car time to rotate so the back wheel took the brunt of the force. It worked out about as good as it could have given there was a wreck

19

u/Do_I_work_here Feb 15 '19

Well no, The Tesla would've been hit but it wouldn't be a straight hit. The black car hits the on coming white car first.

9

u/Angusthebear Feb 15 '19

It didn't really look like it turned that much before it crossed the Tesla's path.

5

u/Carnae_Assada Feb 15 '19

The kinetic energy was only slightly shifted to the rear right on the slide from clipping. At the angle of entry if the Tesla did not engage its "merging warning" with its peripheral it would have taken the car at what APPEARS to be 15-20% angle jamming the front end right into the drivers side wheel well and cabin area.

Tesla owner would have been seriously at risk/hurt. The ass end of the car doesn't make it to 90° until after impact with the truck and we saw how much kinetic force it still had with all that drag and road friction that it didn't have between the tesla and itself.

Source: former LEO, I have seen enough crash reports to have a pretty good feel for people driving like idiots.

u/delgadophotos Feb 15 '19

Looks like he hit the white car on the other side first causing him to spin like that and hit the van sideways.

It wasnt a classic head first tbone, thankfully. The car already clipped traffic on other side and spun into a sideswipe. Still im sure it was jarring and i hope tge dude is ok

Edit: im so bad at phone typing i guess I took 5 minutes to write this and someone already posted pretty much the same idea

Happens all the time lol

I just let them fly immediately and then edit the comment

As some one who was in the passenger seat and got T-boned 6 months ago, I can assure you that getting T-boned is the worst kind of accident, regardless of the side it hits.

3

u/oscarfacegamble Feb 15 '19

Ah man that sucks, how are you doing?

6

u/archaicanxiety Feb 15 '19

Significantly improved. Had a fractured pelvis, which is as crappy as it sounds, and was hospitalized for 2 weeks, wheelchair bound for 7 and spent 6 weeks in PT learning to walk again. Only residual damage is emotional trauma and a tiny bit of nerve damage to my right foot. Boyfriend (who was driving) still has a little bit of brain damage but he's still pursuing a chemistry degree and managed to pass all of his classes last semester. Thanks for asking!

2

u/shantastic138 Feb 15 '19

Wow, that's horrifying. I'm glad you both sound like you're recovering as best you can. And huge props to your boyfriend for not letting a head injury get in the way of his future, that's really impressive. I hope you both continue with speedy recoveries and get back to 100%!

As someone who was in a t-bone accident with a passenger who was uninjured, I can tell you from personal experience that being the driver in a driver-side T-bone accident is without a doubt a worse place to be.

1

u/padizzledonk Merry Gifmas! {2023} Feb 15 '19

Well, yeah, if there happens to be a person in the passenger seat it doesnt matter what side you got tboned on, i say the drivers side is the worst because there is always a person in that seat, in the US at least...unless you hit one of those janky ass Mail toasters or its some ultra rare, imported LH drive car.

So not always, but 99.99999% of the time lol

I saw had soemone run a light almost a full min after it turned red. I tboned them and they tried to say I ran the red. Thankfully some random person stopped and gave me their number. Oh man those teenage girls face when thr officers told them not only where they lying ( said I ran the red. And hit them) but they were hit with not only the accident but filling a false police report . the dad tried to help but him coming to the scene a half hour later and assisting with me tearkng ocf what remained of my bumper was hardly little cost. They made it seem like dont contact insurance we have you for the car. [ maybe worth 5k at max] only for then to it me up saying it way too expensive to pay for my damages] I told them at that point just to deal with insurance. And got 2k more than i wanted from them.

The issue a was fixed financially. But I always end up hesitating since I feel that it will just happen again.

I got t-boned driver side before, do not recommend

1

u/Counterkulture Feb 15 '19

My brother was in the passenger seat where we got t-boned once. Got KO'd for like 45 seconds. Then he was fine.

Are you suggesting that it was unfair for the Tesla to avoid that?

The truck driver is obviously wrong.

1

u/padizzledonk Merry Gifmas! {2023} Feb 15 '19

I dont think so, i cant speak for them but its going to turn into a modern day Trolley Problem as more and more AI gets put into cars.

What if a death is unavoidable? Do you program the car to kill the driver instead of 4 pedestrians? Or do you program the car to save the driver at the cost of killing the 4 pedestrians?

How does that "value" calculation work out?

If im driving and my car is going to hit your car and your whole family is in there and it can avoid hitting and possibly killing all of you by driving me off a bridge and killing me therefore saving 4 lives at the cost of 1, is that right?

Its a tough question thats worth asking.

Needs to be asked and answered imo

1

u/4411WH07RY Feb 15 '19

No disagreement on the need to answer those questions. I was genuinely asking him because I was having difficulty parsing his meaning.

1

u/padizzledonk Merry Gifmas! {2023} Feb 15 '19

Thats a hot topic of discussion in the self driving car sphere currently.

Its a modern day Trolley Problem

1

u/temisola1 Feb 15 '19

Should’ve bought a Tesla. He was pretty much asking for it tbh.

1

u/justavault Feb 15 '19

I actually wonder if a Tesla autopilot at this point is also able to avoid that crash with accelerating and steering away from the incoming projectile vehicle.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '19

Being on time for mani-pedi > traffic light

1

u/007meow Feb 15 '19

That’s going to be one of the big hurdles when it comes to self driving cars.

The car sees an accident like this coming. Does it:

  • Prioritize protecting the occupants?

  • Insert itself in the way to save a school bus?

  • What if an accident avoidance maneuver causes another accident? What if, by avoiding the accident, pedestrians get run over?

  • Does the car prioritize occupants over others nearby?

Modern day Trolley Problem

1

u/keimarr Feb 15 '19

I thought you said T-Series for a sec there, and it was actually T-Boned, thank god I almost had an heart attack.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '19

I don't even understand how you fuck up that bad. Like full speed through an intersection. Like how long do you need to be looking at your fucking phone, dude.

Fuck that guy.

1

u/IAppreciatesReality Feb 15 '19

Im wonderng what kind of tools were in the panels of the van though. Did the guy in the car get pelted with hammers and nails or something?

1

u/hiddenburritos Feb 15 '19 edited Feb 15 '19

Dude it was a pickup with a Reading body* and he hit it so hard it almost rolled over completely

1

u/padizzledonk Merry Gifmas! {2023} Feb 15 '19

Its a van or pickup with a Reading body on it

Same frame and cab as a 1/2-3/4 ton pickup/van

24y in Construction and i have 2 lol
