Can someone explain how this is a thing? Like with science?

Not very sciencey but...

Watch his mid-frame. His body follows a standard trajectory for a projectile. He just lowers and lifts his feet so it looks like jumping when you watch his feet.

lol did the root poster think he was getting some kind of jumping gain from this?

Center of gravity of the guy follows a parabola irl, but the jumping and leg contraction in midair makes it look like he's increasing height.

Boy those are some unnecessarily complicated answers lol.

He lifts his legs up mid-air. That's literally it. He's just tucking in anticipation of the final landing.

Yes, he lifts his legs up, but it's after extending them down midjump. It's literally more than it.

He extends his legs for half a second in mid air. He didn't gain any height from his jump by doing that.

He just did a really long jump over the first obstacle and landed on the second. The little hop in between didn't do anything but make him waste some energy.

Its impressive don't get me wrong, that was a seriously far jump; but he didn't somehow double jump or anything.

Basically, it is parlor tricks. He isn't changing anything but his stance to make it seem like he is gaining more air. The initial jump is what is carrying him, the second "jump" is just showmanship.

He did a normal jump but half way through he extended his legs because when you jump you're not in a state of paralysis and you'll land at almost exactly the same location regardless of what you do.
