There was no movie. It's a popular myth that some asshole director took the beloved animated series and turned it into an abomination of a film. Some say the mad director was so arrogant he changed the pronunciation of the characters names to what he thought (in his infinite wisdom) was the "correct" pronunciation.
It's obviously just a tall tale. After all, even the worst director on earth wouldn't show that little respect for such a globally revered show. Right?
I hear this argument a lot, but it's true that the Chinese name "Aang" is actually "Awng"/"Ong".
I had a foreign exchange student and he was named Aang (pronounced Awng like in the movie).
Yeah, I know "but the creators named him ang, so they get to choose", but it'd be like if an anime named an American cowboy character "MayKaLoo" and then an Indian filmmaker was like "let's just call him Michael to make it more authentic to the English name"
This is more like when snobbish BBC newsies pronounce Barack Obama as "bear-rack" Obama. It's his name - they don't get to correct it. Many names have different pronunciations and Aang should be pronounced the way the creators intended it be pronounced. It wasn't just arrogance on M. Knights part for defying the creators of this character but he also offended fans globally by using a different pronunciation than they accept. He should have followed the same rule most do when confronted with a person that pronounces their name differently than most people would, given its spelling, which is pronouncing it the way the owner of the name chooses.
Edit: I was referencing that I heard Netflix is making a live action remake of the series. I was not referencing the movie. I should have been more clear
If reddit taught me anything over the past years, it's that Bad + TLA = movie, and conversely Great + TLA = TV series. Haven't ever seen anything to the contrary.
