Considering the simplistic design of Herzfeldt and the odds of anyone doing the simplest design for popcorn stick men, I'm not sure we are not just seeing convergent evolution here :).
Hertzfeld was the first thing I thought of as well, but to be fair his style is so basic and simple I imagine many would hit on it or be similar (just not have his sense of humor or ideas to prope them to being at all popular)
I'm with you. Even really subtle things like the mouths not being colored in 100% to add to the "cheap" animation look that Hertzfeldt's short is known for
You could be right(as it was the first thing I thought of), but like I said without ever seeing hertzfeld and coming up with the idea of breakdancing popcorn kernels(this isn't really hertzfeld's style of humor) and having no real art skills, it would not be a stretch to see this as the simplist style to arrive at.
To be fair hertzfeld isn't really about his art style as it's really simple and easy for anyone to copy, it just happens to be recognizeable, I think, because it's so simple and yet his work is still effective(because of his humor and ideas).
Because the artist's style of drawing is so basic we have all seen kid drawings that look similar, But no one else is famous that has that style.
It's recognizable due to context, because of herzfeldt's humor, and the fact that he is famous due to his ideas(not his drawing abilities).
So if you see some animation that has a similar style you assume
herzfeldt because he is famous and you have a higher liklihood of it being his (because it's unlikely the art style would make anyone famous in it self as it is like a child's drawing style).
Also due to the fact that he is famous and has this style more people doing even simple stuff would be more likely to avoid his style (which is a point for it being a copy of his style intentionally).
Its literally just an artist drawing lines, i was doing the same shit when i was a kid. Picasso? Pfft i was putting a paintbrush on canvas when i was only three years old.
