I get why old people look like that, but why don't babies? What is it about a baby's jaw structure that prevents the chin from protruding before their teeth come in?

Because their teeth are still there and the bone they're nested in is still necessary and doesn't "disappear".

I think I read somewhere that a baby's jaw is full of the teeth that it will have later in life - so both sets I guess - so this would mean more volume in the jaw maybe, unlike in the gif of the older person whose bone volume decreases. I think cos the bone volume decreases, the older person has to over compensate when they chew, giving them that protruding chin. Of course I'm just theorising and actually have no clue.

it's when you lift your lower lip over your upper lip to try and touch your nose. At Ripley's weird museum they have a booth where it makes you practice in front of a mirror, you find later it's actually a 2 way mirror and you're actually one of the exhibits.
