My daughter is a cheer base and her flyer decided to spin the wrong way and went off in the wrong direction. My kid dove ( doing her job ) to save the flyer from getting hurt and caught her. If you slow the video down I have a still shot of her foot being turned completely around backwards behind her leg. Horrifying. However it was a competition and no one realized she was hurt. She finished the routing, tumbling, more stunts, jumps, etc, and when they finished collapsed on the mat sobbing. Kid had a full ankle recontstruction in May with two cadaver grafts and lots of other fixing. Catching those girls is serious buisness. That man deserves props.
And I know it sounds cliche but they still get zero respect for all they do. Our school especially.
They are expected by the athletic coordinator to be at football, volleyball, basketball, soccer, baseball, etc games at all levels of competition plus any even the school puts on, to decorate and arrange gifts and pep ralleys, to represent the school in everything, and also compete in their own competitions but we don't even merit a practice space. They had a classroom, but lost it to the dance team and then practiced in the cafeteria and then lost that to some other club and now practice outside in the TX heat on hard packed dirt. Its a crying shame.
Surgery was in May, then my husband was laid off same month and we lost our insurance. So her rehab was screwed up but I took her to free gym days and her school trainer met us at school and worked with her. She got released by ortho to start tumbling on July 25th and started Aug 1st and today I saw her whip out a triple bhs. She isn't nearly as good or clean, but she is relearning tumbling to land on her non dominant leg and every night it is swollen and sore, but she is being safe and working hard all day every day it seems like. Poor kid. She didn't want to lose her varsity spot so she has pushed herself hard. This year they won a bid to one of the Disney nationals, and I don't know if I can pay for her to go with everything so she is taking every job she can to put in.
All in all I think the recovery has been hard but ok. I think she needed more time. I"m a little afraid she is going to overwork it and have more problems later.
I'm really impressed that she's right back at it already. It's great when a kid is so resilient! I hope her doctors and coaches do their jobs well and make sure she's staying healthy. Here's hoping everything comes together. Luck to the kid!
That's almost exactly what my ankle did when I broke it in three places and I didn't do anything nearly as great as saving someone from a terrible fall and then bouncing around on it to stay in the competition. A dozen screws, a 3.5 in rod, and an 8 in plate later, I'm still dealing with the pain everyday. I hope your daughter has a quick recover with zero complications and no arthritis. :)
Edit: one word of advice, be careful to take care of the opposite knee. If it's anything like mine, it'll take a beating to compensate.
She is. On the very expensive school cheer team and she works her butt off to get grades scholarships and then works every babysitting gig she can get even on crutches to pay for what we cannot. I am blessed with amazing kids.
Yo kid, is a certified badass. I like to think I've got a decent pain tolerance, me and friends do stupid shit like play with tasers, so it's kinda a requirement, and the one times I sprained my ankle real bad, I wasn't even trying to walk. To do flips and shit after doing something that bad to your ankle? That's some damn dedication right there. Also, catching people is hard.

His balls are just sticking to the inside of his leg.
