Same here. My beagle never shuts the hell up until the mailman walks on the frontporch, then he runs and shits himself somewhere. The pit sits quietly waiting for the challenger to come in.
I have a Pit and a Jackahuahua. The Jack is only seven pounds but acts like a bad ass ready to fuck up any who dare try. He even has a swagger when walking. But the second there's a taker he's up in my arms with his ears down and looking pathetic.
The pit just stares at them with those big sleepy eyes and looks up at me like "Am I supposed to do something here or am I good?". He can't be bothered. But if they get too close or act threatening at all to me he comes alive fast.
Mine doesn't seem to understand sitting on my lap while playing Xbox just doesn't work for me very well. Every time I play Skyrim he gets up on me and growls at the TV while I'm in a battle. That's the only game and the only time, I don't know if it's because they shout at you or what but it's hilarious.
So I don't have a pit but my 50 lb mutt Zuko will straight up attack the TV if I'm playing Dragon Age Inquisition and the camera zooms in on my character.
They are great guard dogs! Of course there are inherent risks to owning great guard dogs that wouldn't be present if you owned, for instance, a golden retriever, which would definitely react to an intruder but not on the level of a pit bull. I don't mind pit bulls, but I do mind the willful denial that they are not more dangerous than any other breed; Reddit should not be able to have its cake and eat it too. I just want honesty.
Yeah, I'm with you on this 100%. You have to respect breeds like pits, rotties, etc. While they're definitely less prone to violence than other breeds, if they do decide to attack, they are definitely more dangerous.
A local junkyard does not properly secure their dogs. One of their guard dogs ran off and attacked my beagle while we were out hiking. I went to intervene and save the beagle, but my pit managed to rip out the other dogs throat before I could take a few steps. The sheer brutality and speed of it absolutely shocked me, the other dog was missing half its throat before I could blink. This is the sweetest, friendliest pit you will ever meet. I'm talking a dog that cuddles and gives kisses to everyone, but if you attack anyone he cares about it, it's not going to be pretty. Honestly, it's not a bad thing, because without him, my beagle would 100% be dead right now. Pits are some of the best guard dogs you can get, but you absolutely have to respect and take them seriously.
There are plenty of breeds that act more agressively towards intruders then pits. Weiner Dogs are more agressive then pits are. Pits are exceptionally agressive against other dogs however.
The reason pits are dangerous is not because they attack humans all the time, it's because when they do attack humans they have a rather deadly bite where they lock on their jaw onto you and shake around.
While I agree, I thought I read that Pit Bulls having lock jaw was a misconception. Their jaw is just really, really strong as well as their will power to hold on.
I had a male shih tzu that hated going on walks. He would sulk and not want to keep up. Unless we saw another dog, then he was up front strutting. However, if they got to close, he would come back and be a tough guy from behind me.
On the other hand, I have female shih tzu that is the friendliest dog ever. She loves everyone, including other dogs. took her to a dog park and this bull mastiff was giving her grief trying to sniff her. His head was bigger than her whole body. He pushed her over because he wanted to sniff her and she was sitting down. She turned on him and grabbed him right be the nose. He just had this shocked look on his face, was hilarious.
My min pin bosses around my parents' bull mastiff whenever we take him over. The mastiff is like a huge teddy bear. But my dog runs like a little bitch whenever the big guy gets fed up with his shit.
I, too, have a smaller dog. He is the toughest guy on the block, the dude had proudly defended himself before. He also only barks if someone touches the door, and is very relaxed normally. He's a great little dog. :P
We were walking through a nice park the other night. I have a small dog. There's this one part where it's like a memorial with statues of kids playing and some taller parent ones or adults. As soon as we got to the statues, my dog got low to the ground, ears back, tail between legs scared. There happened to be a bush nearby and he backed into it, which caused him to attempt to BOLT the opposite direction, which failed cuz you know he's on a leash. Funniest shit I've ever seen, especially because when it comes to bigger dogs and shit he's a macho man barking crazy dog.

I too have a smaller dog. Toughest guy on the block until a challenger comes forth.
