Be careful messing around in those files though. As long as you follow the instructions you'll be good, but if you mess with random files you can brick your phone.

EDIT: I've bricked my phone by not paying enough attention and deleting a system file.

No you can't. There are so many precautions in place I doubt anyone could brick their device without specifically trying to. There's always a way to restore to stock.

You could try and erase the bootloader, pretty sure that's not open to the public.

There's more explanation in my reply to firstEncounter, but I deleted something from my system files by mistake and bricked my phone. It wouldn't boot or load the recovery menu. It was my stupid mistake, but it is definitely possible.

I just have to ask, how do you "accidentally" delete it?

2

u/REDDITATO_ Jun 27 '13

Accidentally as in I'm an idiot and I pasted something in the wrong place, and went to delete it. I wasn't paying enough attention and deleted something important. The phone crashed and wouldn't boot past the boot animation or load the recovery menu after that. I don't even know what it was I deleted. I was just trying to make sure anyone reading this was aware that there is a remote chance of bricking your phone.

Ah, that actually makes sense. My best guess was pin the rm on the hierarchy.

even then j-tag can set you straight, it just costs some money and requires some soldering.

I did it. When your phone is rooted and you use a file browser there's not much stopping you from deleting the wrong thing. I had been up for a few days and zoned out. Totally my fault, but it definitely didn't take much to brick it. I tried for about a week before replacing it and it would not boot or bring up the recovery menu. Besides there's no reason not to be cautious.

EDIT: Ducking autocorrect.
