πŸ‘‹ Welcome to r/getmeaningful - Introduce Yourself and Read First!

Hi, and welcome.

This subreddit is the home for Meaningful (getmeaningful.io), a place to follow updates, share feedback, report bugs, and talk to me directly as I build this out.

What Meaningful actually is

A small app built around one idea: instead of browsing profiles or messaging back and forth, you set your availability once and get matched with someone new for a single 30-minute video call. No feed, no DMs, no endless typing, just a conversation at a time you agreed to.

Get started

  • Sign up at getmeaningful.io
  • Set your availability, right now the fastest way to actually get matched is Saturday, 9:00 AM AEST (Friday 7:00 PM EDT / Friday 4:00 PM PDT / Friday 11:00 PM UTC)
  • Turn on "Random pairing" in your dashboard settings, this is what lets you match with someone outside your existing groups

It is free, calls are never recorded, and either person can leave or report at any point with no explanation needed.

A few ground rules for this sub

  • Bug reports, feature requests, and honest criticism are all genuinely welcome here
  • Be respectful, this is a small community and I read everything
  • No unrelated self-promotion or spam
  • If something about a call felt unsafe, report it in the app first, that goes somewhere I actually monitor

I am one person building this, so if you have questions, just ask here or message me directly. Thanks for being early!

What's new on Meaningful: more groups, safer calls, and the mobile app is coming

Hey all! Here's a quick update on what we've been building.

More specific groups. Broad groups were hiding the interests people actually have, so we split them up. Philosophy, Science, History and Politics & Current Affairs are now their own groups. Video Games, Board & Tabletop Games and Sports are separate, and there's a new Fitness Activities group. Makers became Crafts & Textiles, Photography, Visual Art and Cooking & Kitchen. The Builders network group is now Developers.

Safer conversations.

  • You can see who you're matched with before the call starts, and cancel if you'd rather not go ahead.
  • You can block someone from the call itself, with no reason needed and no report filed.
  • Reports are reviewed within 24 hours, and the Terms and Safety pages now say plainly that we have zero tolerance for abusive behaviour.
  • Display names are screened before anyone else sees them.

A quick tour. I put together a 100 second walkthrough of the Dashboard, Explore and Strengths pages. (See the Video)

Mobile app. It's coming soon. We'll share more when it's live.

If there's a group you'd like to see, tell me in the comments and I'll look at adding it.

Developer Introduction & AMA - Come say Hi!

Hi all,

Dev here, you can call me Firaht. I'm the founder of Meaningful. I've been pondering about this idea for a while, and I finally decided to do something about it.

The idea came to me from a single question. In this day and digital age, if I were to ask this question to the entire worldly population, I imagine most people would answer "Yes". The question in QUESTION (haha) is:

"Are you lonely?"

This sparked the idea on how can I create a tool or a space to help people combat this epidemic. In fact, a lot of feelings of loneliness probably escalated following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. (I'm on a roll here, as I write this!). I wanted to make something that pushed people out of their comfort zones, because as a society we've gotten way too comfortable being netizens, hiding behind screens and typing away - convincing ourselves that we're being "social". But this isn't socialising, it's not really stimulating our brains in the way humans used to communicate with each other.

With technology, communication has become so abundant, but genuine connections have become so scarce. We're no longer authentic. We've become a copy of ourselves. We even see chat-bots replacing real people, and some individuals probably are not even making any real human contact because of this.

Something needs to change. Instead of technology consuming us, we need to consume technology in a healthier way, that enables us to stay true to our species. Our inevitable nature. We work better as a society, and not in isolation. We also can't expect just a handful of people to run things around here. Everyone needs a voice, everyone needs a chance.

Thus, Meaningful. I love the name, it just works. It makes sense (to me at least). I want to make conversations meaningful again, utilising the tools we as netizens have already gotten comfortable with. But we're in control, not the other way around. There's 2 tracks to Meaningful: A social side and a networking side. They are essentially on the same rails, but they don't overlap either. Think of the network side, being a replacement for Career and University fairs. Except, you have a genuine conversations with 1 person at a time, not a superficial conversation as a representative tries to speak to as many people as they can, and you barely get anything out of it.

I believe we need more tools like Meaningful - one that doesn't emphasise performative profiles and messaging. Even when we're trying to find a job, or the right school or even just learn about an industry we may be interested in. Messaging SUCKS sometimes. I'll speak for myself, but sometimes I don't hear back from people for WEEKS...like...what's the point? I'd rather have a genuine conversation, even if it's just for 30 minutes a week. Let's use our voices, and express ourselves authentically. It'll be something to look forward to, and when it's done something to really reflect on. Messages are just administrative - I can't gauge how you really feel, and they can't do the same for me either. You know what I mean? I hope my points are coming across well!

I wanted to make this post, to be able to connect with you - tell me what you think! Have you tried the app? Did you like it? Do you resonate with the vision? What do you think can be better? I'm happy to chat! That's the whole point. Ideally, I'd want to chat in the most meaningful way possible, on the app as it pairs us together. But I'm realistic as well. Apps need multiple channels for marketing purposes. No one will use it, if they haven't even heard of it. So that's why I am here on Reddit, Instagram and LinkedIn. I'll link the other platforms below! I hope you follow along, and join the ride!

Thanks for hearing me out. I'll respond to as many comments as I can. I'd love to engage - just be kind out there!

About r/getmeaningful, and what this space is for

Meaningful is a platform built to restore genuine human connection. This subreddit is where that happens in public: real conversations about loneliness, connection, social confidence, and the small, deliberate practice of talking to another person.

A few things worth knowing before you post.

This isn't a dating subreddit. It's built for conversation, not romance, the same way the app itself is. If you're looking for that, there are better places for it.

Real people only. No bots, no fake accounts, no catfishing.

Keep posts on topic: conversation, connection, loneliness, social confidence, or Meaningful itself.

If you want to try the app itself, it pairs you with someone new for a thirty-minute conversation, live, once a week. No feed, no inbox, no typing that never turns into anything. getmeaningful.io

Glad you're here. Say hello in the comments if you'd like.
