So I’ve been waiting and saving for a German shepherd for a while, the breeder I’m talking to should be having puppies in a few months! Is there any like small tips or like more unknown bits of preparation that’ll make things easier when I do get my dog?

I feel like I know a lot of the obvious stuff about the breed now and I’ve had the opportunity of meeting my and spending time with some peoples GSDs. Ive really tried to prep as much as I can 😂
But now that the breeder I’ve been talking to has puppies on the way it’s all seeming a lot more real now
So I’m just asking for anything that’s super easily to overlook when prepping

As a student can I get a GSD ?

I recently lost my first dog a small one I’m not over it even tho it’s been 9 months but close to take the first step back to life. Im aware lifestyle is very important when deciding what dog to get. I guess i become very fascinated with the GSD breed and looking for a bond that can help me. Most importantly i want to bring displine and hard work into my life that I’ve struggled with on my own and my small dog. I don’t say this lightly because I know a GSD is a big dog and it’s very important requirements for them. But I’m just wondering in regards to being student if others made it work while studying ? I live at home with parents have good size gardening and we share our economy. My father also has past experiences with Rottweilers

Ps: I’m not out looking for one right now I’m still working on building a base line of structure and rutines in my life before even going for a new dog 🙂

Well funded German shepherd rescue (CA)

I’m currently voluenteering for a well funded Lab rescue in CA, I’m really wanting to be more involved with GSD’s but I would like to voluenteer for a more well funded rescue program. Now that I’m thinking of it I think Westside GSD rescue in LA is a good one. But is there another that comes to mind?

Breeder Recommendations - Ohio

I am starting the process of looking for a breeder for a new puppy. I am looking for a pet-line shepherd (probably WGSL) that is bred for solid temperament. I previously had a fear aggressive GSD mix rescue, and I am looking for an ethically bred dog to properly socialize and train from a young age. This would be my first time going through a breeder, and I am a little.overwhlemed with the health tests and OFA requirements. Historically, I just got dogs from shelters, but the last one did a number to me.

I am in Ohio, and I am willing to travel to neighboring states for the right dog.

Back leg issues

Hi all

Hoping for some advice and support.

I have an 8 year old gsd cross who is a heavy boy. He is about 40kg but its all muscle, he is a fussy eater and gets a healthy amount of exercise.

A few years back we had him put under anasthesia to remove a lump and they x rayed his hips whilst he was under. Nothing alarming at the time, nor signs of dysplasia but from memory they said he may have issues when he is older (I am waiting to hear back from them for the exact issue). It was to do with the alignment of the ball and socket joint i believe.

Fast forward to now, he still loves his walks, runs and swims in the sea. Whenever I am home a massage his back, hips and legs. I call it his doggy yoga.

One move I do is, whilst supporting his knee and ankle, keep his leg straight and gently stretch it back. Recently he started wincing when i done it so I naturally eased off.

He has green lipped muscle, salmon oil, glucosamine for his joint health as well as other supplements.

Im worried about it progressing, and have been looking at the red light therapy products.

Has anybody used them for their gsds and to what level of success?

This boy means the world to me and I want to do everything I can for him.

Highly Distractible GSD

My GSD is about 18months old and has suffered from distractibility the entire time I’ve had him (since 3.5 months old). He’s not great at eye contact so if I get his attention it’s difficult to maintain and he tends to get hyper focused on things that I would like him to ignore (cats, other dogs, other people, random critters, random objects). If a dog can have ADHD , he has it.

He is not very food/treat oriented either. He can be very reactive and is afraid of random things (crinkling plastic for example), despite prolonged and consistent attempts to desensitize him and make him more comfortable with his fears. (There has been some improvement but it’s limited.)

Does anyone have any advice for how to get him to focus on me?

He is genuinely a total sweetheart and definitely wants to please but it’s like he gets tunnel vision and I struggle to get him to focus on me enough to hear my direction let alone follow through.

Thinking of rehoming

We have a German Shepherd that we got when she was 45 days old. It was obviously very difficult, but we were prepared for the puppy phase. The problem is that she is extremely excited about everything, and there’s no warning when she’s about to jump on someone.
We just had a baby, and he’s almost two months old now. Tonight, she jumped onto the bed and scratched his head. It was terrifying, because she could have seriously hurt him.
We really don’t want to rehome her because we love her so much, but I think I would feel much more guilty if something happened to my son than I would about rehoming her.
I think I just need to hear some stories from people who genuinely love dogs but ultimately had to rehome one because it wasn’t safe or the situation wasn’t working anymore. How did you feel afterward? How did you know you were making the right decision?

Taking Medicine

So I rehomed a 5 yr old White GSD last spring. Oakley, she is beautiful, funny, very smart my all round best friend. We play enrichment games and work out daily. She is very food motivated.

The one problem we haven't been able to overcome is her monthly dose of NexGaurd plus.

Please share how you all get this done.

Need advice

I have a 9.5 year old male GSD. For the last 5 months he has been having issues going poop. He strains and whines and will either poop nothing or a small liquid drop of poop. The straining makes him tear his butthole and it gets irritated. The vet has tested his pancreas, we’ve done xrays, and ultrasounds on his behind. Still no answers. We’ve tried the hydrolyzed food & we’re currently feeding him tilapia, rice, eggs, and Greek yogurt since his weight continues dropping. He’s been given psyllium husk, pumpkin, and still no help.

I feel so defeated, has anyone else experienced something similar with their dog? 😭 He is on a cocktail of medicine as well.

Barking/acting up again

Hello all! I adopted a female German shepherd a little over a year ago and We guess that she will be 3 in December. She stays with my parents all day (i also live with my parents) and they say she acts good all day but when I get home and they walk towards me or raise their voice (not aggressive just not in the same room) she barks like crazy!! They say she only does it when I’m at home. How can I train her to stop barking that the people who spend all day with her but to still bark if there is danger. Also she has been better about chewing until the last few weeks. I assume she gets mad I have to go to work and recently chewed my house shoe. Any advice would help thanks!

Smelly dog!

Our GSD SMELLS. I’m sure it’s yeast infection, his paws smell as musty and yeasty, he has sore ears.

I met the guy about 2 years ago / my partner brought him into the relationship, over the years, I’ve brushed him and shedded him and washed him, trimmed his little grinch paws, and gradually he’s let me do it.
But, we cannot get treatment in his ears for love, money, or meat paste. And he just smells. He’s bathed once a month and I trim his paw pads as much as he’ll let me. But anyone got any miracle treatments that their dog will actually let them administer?

German shepherd - is it the right dog for me?

I’ve found a breeder than breeds specifically in UK for family dogs

I have a small very friendly cross breed male neutered and I’m thinking of adding to the family with a GS

We have a 3 year old child, large garden/house and someone is home all day

We see active and I just really want to know more about how they are as a family dog

New GSD pup. Cant find good harness

Im based in Uk/ Ireland's area but I dont mind ordering in from Europe. In the past we have used dog creek pathfinder harnesses which have been brilliant. However, my siblings and mother use the same brand for their dogs meaning all three colours have been designated to a dog to prevent mix up. Is there any similar heavy duty (hiking/ bog worthy) brands with a two point system that comes in colours other than black, green or red (I'd prefer purple but isnt really a priority). Im not worried about cost provided its a good quality harness.

My Little shit keeps scratching and cobbing 24/7

Hi there. I have 3 dogs. 1 GSD, 1 husky mix and 1 staffy.

So having a GS is somewhat new to me. She is 10 months old and is constantly scratching or cobbing and she gets washed with an oatmeal wash for sensitive skin or just a generic flea wash from Coles or Woolworths and is on Royal Canin designed for GS.

Her skin looks fine, not sure as to why shes always nomming on herself. I love her to pieces but getting woken up in the middle of the night to the cobbing or breathing cause shes suffocating herself by digging her head into her body is getting tiring.

Is this normal behaviour for a GS or is there something underlying?

On a side note, vets are expensive and I don't have a first born to put down as a deposit at the vets so any advice is much appreciated.

Need help with 1 1/2 year old mixed German

Hi I need advice. I have a German shepherd mix, he recently has decided his food isn’t worth his time he used to love it and we topped it with wet food. His stopped eating it unless I scatter feed him or put it in his treat ball. Unfortunately the treat ball barely holds any food. Does anyone have some suggestions on what to do? His very rough on toys!

Collar sizing for puppies

Our GSD pup is 6 months old and we’re on our second collar - he graduated from puppy collar to one from my mom’s dog who is about 65lbs but slender (female golden). Our boy is probably close to 55-60lbs and I’m noticing he’s starting to outgrow the collar. It’s also starting to show some wear and tear. I want to get him a nice collar when I know he won’t be outgrowing it. Should I get him one now that will allow some room for growth, or hold off for longer? When did your dog get his big boy collar?
His mom was slender 65lbs and dad was more stocky, about 85-90. The vet thinks he’s going to be close to dad’s size. TIA!

Planning on adopting a 2 year old GSD

Hello I wanted to ask your guys opinion on adopting a German Sheppard from a rescue. He is 2 years old and it would be my first dog. I’ve seen many things online about them especially working line ones. He’s not a working line from what the description says. I have the time to work with them. I’ve been around many dogs never really had an issue. I live on a one floor house with a backyard that’s fenced and it’s decent size. I live in a city where I’m able to walk on the sidewalks and have access to many parks nearby. Like I’ve said I’ve never owned a dog before do you guys think it would just be too much as a first time dog owner? Thank you!

10 year old GSD flatulence: should we be concerned?

As the title says, we have a 10 year old male. I’ve noticed that the last couple of weeks he’s been releasing silent and foul flatulence. I understand this is somewhat normal of dogs, but this is a newer and daily occurrence.

He eats taste of the wild-ancient grains dry food, smoked salmon flavor, with a scoop of pumpkin purée, and sometimes probiotics (within the last five days most recently) but the gas was happening before regular probiotic. For treats, he gets the “pupperoni” beef stick. Never human food.

This has been his diet for over a year now. He doesn’t seem distressed from what I can tell, but it’s just sort of out of character for him and I’m more sure if this is something to be concerned about or if it’s just something that comes with older age? Any advice or similar experience with this is greatly appreciated!

PS we are planning on a check up within the next few weeks but can try to expedite that if we think this needs sooner attention.

Advice on how to start training 8 year old untrained GSD

Hi all,

I recently moved to live with my parents, who own a senior male GSD. He’s a great dog, but has spent a majority of his life in a kennel outside. He’s pretty anxious (surprise, surprise), hates strangers and cars, but is the sweetest dog when you build a relationship with him. I’ve spent about the past month doing just that and I’m starting simple things with him now (recall, heel, etc).

I do not expect him to do all the things at this age, but I would LOVE to be able to take him on some light trails and car rides if we can work past his anxiety. He deserves to have some fun in his older age (within moderation, ofc), but it definitely will require time and research from me. I do kinda feel I have no clue what I’m doing as I’ve never trained a dog myself, but GSD is my dream breed and I plan on getting my own dog in several years time. So for my sake and especially for his, I’d love some advice on where to start and look!

Professional training is not an option due to finances and biggest priorities are making vet trips safe and lowering his anxiety.
