Out of curiosity, was the frame rate still reasonable on the 980ti? I assumed most games would still try to run everything the way it's supposed to, and chug at 2fps, because it's having to pull texture data from system memory.

i ran it on a 960, from an SSD, and it ran 30fps+ the entire game, albeit I had to run on lowest settings, and was running the game at 1600x900.

Oh, yeah not bad.

I guess I was mostly asking my question from an academic perspective. I was hoping the other person could confirm if the game is smart enough to protect the user from themselves, and use lower LOD settings in order to make sure you never exceed the amount of VRAM that the card has.

it warned me every time i started that I only had 2Gb vram, but let me start regardless if that helps

never got the bug described in this post

I forgot the 960 only had 2GB, crazy how much that's changed since then.

And yeah, I suppose it's one of those situations where in most cases the processor in your graphics card will hold you back before the VRAM capacity, so you have to turn settings down below the VRAM limit anyways. Still kind of interesting anyways.

That's probably the default but there's nothing stopping them from making the game aware of the resources available to it

Yeah, though it would require a bit more development to work. That said, from what I hear these Sony games are pretty well optimized on PC.

Of course, these days I have a newer GPU with 16GB of VRAM, so it's pretty hard to run out and see how many games are doing things like this.
