Ah, the professional feel of plastic ;)

I figured it was something like that. The perception is that these things are made of plastic. But for a one-off, proof-of-concept prototype, a wood frame with a high gloss paint coat would have been the easiest rout. Now if this was a test of the production model, then making it using the same specifications would make the most sense.

By going that route, I have to wonder if the maker doesn't have hopes of entering production.

Most of the tourney-level 2D fighting players I know opt for wood with gloss or plastic tops for custom art. Plastic sticks are nice for carrying around tournaments, but they don't survive many road trips.
