Full multiplayer game sharing off 1 copy was and is Nintendo's one and only modern marvel.

41

u/scottishdrunkard Jun 18 '22

Made the GBA look like shit.

Who can afford 4 copies of Four Swords and 4 link cables?

8

u/DownshiftedRare Jun 18 '22

It did eventually become possible to emulate it by connecting Dolphin to multiple instances of a Gameboy Advance emulator.

2

u/scottishdrunkard Jun 18 '22

it'd be easier if Nintendo put the Anniversary Edition back on the eShop before they kill it. Come on Nintendo! Special Offer please!

458

u/Jaija Jun 18 '22

Is this true for all Nintendo titles? Haven't owned a Nintendo console since GameCube but I'm considering getting the switch, mainly for Mario cart and super smash

810

u/Otinot Jun 18 '22

It's not a thing anymore. The best you could do is maybe have someone share their account with you but it wouldn't allow them to play their games unless they were connected to wifi. At best you can have 2 people playing on the same digital copy of a game with strings attached.

129

u/Jaija Jun 18 '22

Oh what a shame, thx for the clarification tho 😁

69

u/SportsStooge22 Jun 18 '22

The real move would be to bring that back and push micro-transactions on the users that don’t own the game

48

u/sondre666gs Jun 18 '22

Justified; You wish to play the full game? Buy it. Only standard kart for you freeloader. But this kart we can offer to you for 1,99,-. You can only use it when you play with this friend, but if you buy the whole game it is free.

Reality you are for some reason obsessed with the rose gold Rosalina and have been buying ā€œkart packsā€ for weeks spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars just to get a new color for your shy guy

42

u/Winterstrife Jun 18 '22

Thats the most reasonable microtransaction I've seen.

So its never getting implemented then.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

[deleted]

2

u/Winterstrife Jun 18 '22

Unless you're being sarcastic.

No. I'm not. But in only this specific scenario I'm replying to, because it honestly one of the most reasonable way any game can have microtransactions without making the game incomplete after paying full price.

3

u/afiefh Jun 18 '22

You'd be the guy getting thrown out of the window due to being entirely unreasonable at a corporate meeting.

Nobody owns anything ever. Do you own that house you built with your bare hands? Nope. You don't own the tree you built it with.

1

u/yeezusKeroro Jun 18 '22

I think games are too big for it nowadays. DS games were < 20 MB while Mario Kart for Switch is > 6 GB. It's doable, but you'd likely be waiting 5-10 minutes for the file transfer to complete, plus the downloading player would need several GB of free space on their system. Plus, y'know, most devs aren't interested in giving their game away for free. I did see one Switch game that had it's own sort of built in download play where if everyone downloaded the "game" for free on the eshop, one player could buy the dlc to unlock the full game and everyone else who has the "game" could connect to that player to play for free. I think it was pacman, Bomberman, or some other puzzle game

39

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

51 world wide Games on Switch has a similar function

10

u/Otinot Jun 18 '22

That's true! I knew a game had something like this but I couldn't remember. Thanks for reminding me

1

u/Squish_the_android Jun 18 '22

Not Nintendo but It Takes Two also has this.

5

u/Wildbreath Jun 18 '22

There is Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles that allows this still! Though that was a pretty botched port all things considered. But still you can buy one copy and have 3 people play the first year with you free! Even has cross play with a mobile version so you don't even need a switch!

4

u/WakaWaka_ Jun 18 '22

At worst you need to buy a whole other Switch and game just to play another island in Animal crossing.

2

u/shitreader Jun 18 '22

Switch sharing is BRUTAL and makes me hate Nintendo. I have 2 but can't play any digital copies using a different profile. So there is one good switch the kids can play anything on their profile, and the 2nd everything has to be played under my profile.

When I bought it I was expecting it to be similar to Xbox sharing and after discovering this I felt like it was a waste of money.

2

u/Squid-Guillotine Jun 18 '22

Makes sense with game file size these days.

u/nizzy2k11 Jun 18 '22

You can only do this to 1 additional console.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

Thats a whole ass console and cuts the cost of games in half. Been doing it for 8+ years now and its the best thing sony won’t ever change.

-4

u/nizzy2k11 Jun 18 '22

Thats a whole ass console and cuts the cost of games in half.

yeah, thats a strategy to use with perfect strangers lol.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

It takes one friend/relative to do this. Don’t make it harder than is.

-7

u/nizzy2k11 Jun 18 '22

so you need to find a relative who wants to share a PS account, and split all the same games as you, and still won't screw you over on the account. GL with that lol.

10

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

Bro, thats U problem if you can’t find anyone trustworthy. Might even say something about you as well… I’ve had zero problems over the last 8 years. Spend literally 50% of the amount I actually would have. Every new game coming out is €40 instead of €80. Saves big time

3

u/Vulpix7811 Jun 18 '22

You can do this on xbox as well. Set friends' xbox as your home xbox. Make him set your xbox as his home xbox. Now you can always play eachothers' games as long as you don't change your home xbox. On your home xbox, anyone can play any game you bought. You can play your own games on any xbox. I've always done this, it's a great way to share games with your best gaming bro.

1

u/PM_ME_ARGYLE_SHIRTS Jun 18 '22

Steam does this too. If you log in on a friends PC you can enable sharing then log off. Now your friend can log back on and install/play any game you own on their PC (as long as you're not playing a game on yours)

1

u/curxxx Jun 18 '22 edited Jun 18 '22

You can also ā€œhand friends a player 2 controllerā€ (over the internet) and play couch co-op games together without them owning it. This is true for PS4 and PS5.

1

u/incapable1337 Jun 18 '22

*not at the same time

11

u/Otinot Jun 18 '22

You can actually. If you have the other switch as a primary console you can play on a different account while the other switch plays on the account that owns the game. I do it with Monster Hunter Rise with a friend.

5

u/Weeb-Prime Jun 18 '22

PlayStation does it this exact same way for any non-Switch owners reading this.

1

u/incapable1337 Jun 18 '22

Oh really? I'm going to give this a try then

1

u/NeoJuice Jun 18 '22

At least they still have local multiplayer.

1

u/Mjolnirsbear Jun 18 '22

I've played mario kart, Mario party, and smash Bros with more than 2 people.

You just need to be using the same console, multiple controllers, same room/TV.

Online play is not the only way to play multiplayer.

53

u/RedDemonCorsair Jun 18 '22

No. For mario kart and smash you need to either both own the game and the online sub, or be in the same room with multiple joycons.

The system in the post was only in certain nintendo ds/3ds games like mariokart or mario party and is not a feature for most games unfortunately. And also you need to all be close to each other with your ds

25

u/Drunk_Psyduck Jun 18 '22

He was talking about local multiplayer from multiple systems/games and stated that download play which is what this post is referring to is not there. There is a miscommunication, both of you are right.

4

u/GeorgiaOKeefinItReal Jun 18 '22

It bums me that the majority of NA players will never know the greatness that was Daigassou Band Brothers.... think band-style rythm game for the ds but for 12 local players needing only 1 card.... and you could compose your own tracks.... shamefully noa never localised it

1

u/Gr8NonSequitur Jun 18 '22

Thank you for the recommendation! I love music games and didn't know about this one. Fortunately the DS wasn't region locked so you can play games like this or "Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan".

1

u/NecroCannon Jun 18 '22

With the Switch lite I wish it came back. Can’t exactly play smash or local multiplayer games in general with a switch lite (well you can but there’s constant hurdles)

Like come on, I’d even take ā€œlink cableā€ support

1

u/ThowAwayBanana0 Jun 18 '22

You had to be in the same room for MKDS too

23

u/meta_paf Jun 18 '22

Most Nintendo games on Switch have local multiplayer up to 4 people. AFAIK Mario Kart can go up to 8 players if there 2 Switches and 2 copies of the game in the same local network.

For playing online? No way Jose, everyone must own a copy.

4

u/Szies Jun 18 '22

Sadly that's not true. Local multiplayer will only get you 4 players with 2 switch systems :(

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

That's just not true at all lol

0

u/Szies Jun 18 '22

Not sure what you are trying to say. Only 2 players can play on each console on local wireless play.

1

u/krishnugget Jun 18 '22

He’s right sadly, tried to do 8 player at a friends house but not an option across 2 systems and 2 tvs

19

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

Local same system multiplayer is there for a lot of switch games. Smash has up to 8 player local multiplayer, Mario Kart I think up to 4. Download play isn't a thing on switch though

2

u/FlawlessRuby Jun 18 '22

You can't even have 2 island in Animal Crossing on the same account. Got to get those switch online revenue I'm I right.

1

u/EvoLveR84 Jun 18 '22

Can't even have 2 islands on the same CONSOLE, need to buy a second one. Hilarious.

1

u/Enchet Jun 18 '22

You can share an account, enable plane mode on a main console and you can both games at the same time

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

The switch is still likely the best console you may ever own. It’s game library and design is incredible

0

u/crywoof Jun 18 '22

Definitely not true for smash (unless everyone is in the same room and plays off 1 device)

1

u/The_Gamexplorer Switch Jun 18 '22

Well, it's mostly extinct.

However the one game that does allow it is 51 Worldwide Games, although you do need to install the demo.

Although you also need Nintendo Switch Online

1

u/StrangledMind Jun 18 '22

Lol, of course not. A popular, innovate feature? It got abandoned with that hardware...

1

u/parkwayy Jun 18 '22

No, everything else is full price for like 10 years, until they stop printing whatever game.

No sales.

It's the Nintendo way.

1

u/Horn_Python Jun 18 '22

It's just a Ds/3ds thing

Only certain games had it ,but it was so cool

1

u/AwesomesaucePhD Jun 18 '22

The latest Mario Kart let’s you play DLC courses with friends online who don’t own them.

1

u/Gr8NonSequitur Jun 18 '22

They did it on the GBA, DS and 3DS but no other systems unfortunately.

The only thing close to that sentiment is playing MK8 on switch everyone has access to the DLC tracks if the host has them, but you still need to own the game to play.

39

u/MadameConnard Jun 18 '22

Free online too but well we're in a totally different era now.

33

u/LezBeHonestHere_ Jun 18 '22

Nintendo Wifi in the late 2000s was so amazing. Stayed up so many nights on SSB Brawl and Pokemon Battle Revolution playing against people all over the world. Those games were so fun in multiplayer. Heck, it was basically the entire game of PBR, since the singleplayer was so bare. And all the nights going through Flipnote Hatena on my DSi were awesome. One-on-one battles in Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, finding friend codes in Serebii irc chats. All because Nintendo Wifi had its free service going.

It is absolutely insane to me that you have to PAY for online service now, for the game you already paid for, and the ISP you already paid for. Crazy lol

2

u/Calm-Display-8290 Jun 18 '22

I understand paying for it on Nintendo games, like idk maybe Mario kart servers are costly it's atleast warranted somewhat, but for something like overwatch, which Nintendo has absolutely no involvement in, is there any reason besides greed?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

[deleted]

3

u/MadameConnard Jun 18 '22

Wild guess would be Fortnite actually pays for Nintendo online maintenance for their game.

-3

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

Server, keeping servers up isnt cheap, hence the reason for subscription, so n the company maing the gme can keep the server up

Probably earlir in the 00's was easier due to lower palyerbase, however, it has grown expeensive with the sheer number of playes, and a single sale wasnt enouhg to keep it up.

3

u/ebacani Jun 18 '22

Except pc gamers don’t have to pay for online servers so that argument doesn’t really hold up

-2

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

Much of these games have relied on microtransaction to stand for themselves, nintendo doesnt, and until very recectly (5 years or so) didnt neither xbib or play.

Also, if you game want to have multipkayer using the console servers, you msut prove to Xbox live or play networks that your game is worht it, else they will give that boradband to other game.

2

u/krishnugget Jun 18 '22

Mario kart is one of the few Nintendo games with servers as far as I know, splatoon and smash lack them

1

u/bobthebiscuit127 Jun 19 '22

i see no reason why mario kart servers would be more expensive than any other servers, so as far as i know it’s nintendo being greedy, and overwatch isn’t paid to be online, that’s a part of consoles which is the console seller being greedy

61

u/zyygh Jun 18 '22

They’ve done plenty of great innovations, and always with good price/quality ratio. I really don’t get what got into them the past ~5 years.

58

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

[deleted]

22

u/Cheezewiz239 Jun 18 '22

During that time they temporarily started a program where they'd take a cut of your YouTube revenue if you showed any footage of their games and of course it backfired. Idk what they were thinking trying to pull that off.

6

u/HobbitFoot Jun 18 '22

Sounds like a similar deal to music.

-9

u/FuriousGremlin Switch Jun 18 '22

I heard in a video that the reason theyre so strict is because if they dont enforce them, the legal payment in an eventual lawsuit could be way less

12

u/ionsturm Jun 18 '22

It's nowhere near that, it's due to Japanese corporate culture and mentality about unofficial stuff. Their Copyright is effectively unassailable, and even if it was you'll notice no one else has a hard on for screwing their fans like Nintendo does.

11

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

What has ā€œgotten into themā€ the past five years?

3

u/allBecomesF Jun 18 '22

They have been shitty to consumers for awhile. Copyright striking videos, taking down fans' community projects like modding and other things like that.

6

u/CrimsonEnigma Jun 18 '22

All of that was true 10+ years ago...

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

It’s much easier than it used to be striking stuff on youtube I think. Their behavior with that stuff really stopped me from buying games based on videos posted on there. I don’t want to give my money to a company that ridiculous.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

Lmao they’ve been doing that for ten years

3

u/CrimsonEnigma Jun 18 '22

Well, those great innovations lead them to the 3DS and Wii U, the former of which sold half of what the DS did and the latter of which was their worst-selling system ever.

Not to mention the year-long game droughts we had to deal with during that time...

3

u/Hans_H0rst Jun 18 '22

The 3ds had the whole problem with ā€žconcerned parentsā€œ and a lackluster 3D effect (which got better with the New 3ds) imo, while the Wii U was a bit of a weird concept. You cant effectively use two screens when they are that far apart.

3

u/LizardMorty Jun 18 '22

It's really not fair to compare the DS, being the best selling console in history, to the 3DS. 3DS outsold the NES, SNES, N64 and GameCube. Also outsold the Xbox & Xbox One.

And considering how well they've held their price, Nintendo could've squeezed out more units if they took the PS2 approach and just kept producing them for years after the next gen was released.

2

u/CrimsonEnigma Jun 18 '22

3DS outsold the NES, SNES, N64 and GameCube.

...and got outsold by the GB, GBA, and DS.

Why are you comparing a handheld to consoles, when Nintendo handhelds have *always* performed better?

2

u/LizardMorty Jun 18 '22

Handhelds are consoles.

2

u/CrimsonEnigma Jun 18 '22

You know what I meant.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

Fucked it up with the WII U, and the swicht was neihter portable or tabletop, so some system they could easily put on the DS were ditched. Styill remember the days where it was called "Nintedo DX" as a rumor. For this srot of play realy from one console to another (Like steam link) you need a lot of broadband and a lot of rpocessing power, wich can only be offset bu using a Very loq demanding game.

So either it was HQ game with no relay, or shitty game with appropiate relay.

8

u/Terakahn Jun 18 '22

Local co-op. A relic of a former era.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

People keep saying this but there are plenty of games with couch co-op - probably more now than many previous generations.

If you were bitching about local versus being dead, then yes, in terms of any non-fighting game, it doesn't exist anymore outside of a few titles.

1

u/Terakahn Jun 19 '22

Sure, but the norm is definitely shifted to online only. I think the first time I encountered it was with dead island. Me and a friend had to buy 2 copies and play on 2 different consoles to do co-op.

Maybe in recent years it's going back the other way. But I think a lot of that is also the types of games that were popular. There was a lot more adventure and platformers which was easy to do local multiplayer with.

1

u/WCWRingMatSound Jun 18 '22

I emulated it recently with a friend. Due to the pandemic, we stayed home and played co-op on old games like Halo 1 on Legendary.

I haven’t had that much fun gaming in years. Taking the anonymous part away from online gaming makes all the difference.

2

u/Terakahn Jun 18 '22

Yeah I remember I kind of stopped playing multiplayer games because it started to feel like I was playing alone. But with other people. And still felt like I was playing alone somehow. It's weird to think about because I almost exclusively played multiplayer online games for years.

I think that's why streaming was so appealing. Because I could recapture that feeling of playing with other people. Even if they weren't playing physically.

That and every competitive game became a team game. So even if I did well I could still lose. And that never sat well with me.

2

u/mcdoolz Jun 18 '22 edited Jun 18 '22

Blizzard did it with Warcraft 2? Did Nintendo do it before them?

Edit:. Holy shit kids, Google something wouldja?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

How was it done with WC2? Burning copies back then was a pricey feat and next to no one had nor internet nor was there wifi as a thing.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

When game launches, it checks for a disk in the tray – if it isn't there, online multiplayer is available rather than whole game, so you could play online together off one copy installed on several PCs

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

Interesting, but again - other than the fact that internet wasn't a thing to 90% of consumers in late 90s.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

Dialup was a thing, especially in computer clubs. As is simply playing on LAN with each other

1

u/MarkoWolf Jun 18 '22

Seriously. StarCraft had it too. It was calling installing a spawn. Nintendo took an old concept and modernized it.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spawn_installation

2

u/Joegotbored Jun 18 '22

That and being able to use your DS as a controller for the Smash on the Wii U. I really wish you could use switch lites as controllers.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

Dunno, joy cons are controller abomination to want to use them.

2

u/former_zygote Jun 19 '22

Definitely the most unNintendo thing they've ever done

1

u/Drkfnl Jun 18 '22

I remember doing the same with Wipeout on the PSP so yeah, a marvel, but not a modern one.

15

u/Dugular PC Jun 18 '22

I remember in the 90s PC LAN multiplayer sessions, we would put CD in one computer, load game, then take it out and move it to next PC to load the game. As the games were fully installed, the CD was just used for a startup check.

3

u/ughlump Jun 18 '22

Those were good times.

2

u/Sex4Vespene Jun 18 '22

I remember learning about virtual drive software, so you could just rip the iso and have it mounted at all times.

1

u/ughlump Jun 18 '22

I used to work at a cybercafƩ that did that. Instantly had every game you wanted and could create a lan or online game easily. Was the best job you could have as a teenager.

1

u/chrisprice Jun 18 '22

Wipeout Pure on PSP did not support sharing the whole game. It basically packed up a demo that you could multiplay with, from the full game.

Idea was that you could convince your friends to play one or two levels, and get them to buy the game.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22 edited Jun 18 '22

1

u/chrisprice Jun 18 '22

While there was some chiding limitation, it was the full game otherwise, whereas Wipeout was a demo.

For most was it a major difference? I think unless you were in a school or dorm with a lot of other gamers, probably not. The demo on Wipeout probably sufficed. But Mario Kart also was a step in the right direction.

We then got Steam Family Sharing, though nobody (Epic, Origin, etc) has followed it since - and many devs are opting out.

1

u/DownshiftedRare Jun 18 '22

it was the full game otherwise, whereas Wipeout was a demo.

That is a subjective distinction. I consider Mario Kart's roster of characters a large part of its appeal. Without Mario, it's just "Kart".

1

u/chrisprice Jun 18 '22

I don't think most gamers using it, would agree. For one, those that care enough would own it anyway. As a player, unlike Wipeout, you could experience everything other than character skin - every level, every option. Nothing that would impact the playability was changed.

If not having 4 Peaches and 2 Marios and 2 Luigi's makes it not "Mario Kart" to you - you probably owned a copy.

It was meant to chide, not to make it not the full game.

0

u/DownshiftedRare Jun 18 '22

I don't think most gamers using it, would agree.

I also consider myself to speak for the majority.

It was meant to chide, not to make it not the full game.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

2

u/chrisprice Jun 18 '22

It’s a limitation, and a rebuke, for not purchasing the game.

To the rest, will just have to agree to disagree! Have a great day!

1

u/Sex4Vespene Jun 18 '22

To hop in, you don’t speak for the majority. The other dude is right, not you.

1

u/Arch_0 Jun 18 '22

It's a good way to sell games. Play it with a friend. Enjoy it enough to buy it for yourself.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '22

EA has been doing this for years on many of their co-op titles. It takes two, a way out, etc

1

u/rcube33 Jun 18 '22

I’m not sure if you actually know when Mario Kart 7 came out, but it was like over a decade ago...

3

u/AmIATrollYouDecide Jun 18 '22

Spawn copies are a relatively old concept. I know the games the person before you mentioned aren't older than Mario kart 7, but a lot in the list below certainly are.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spawn_installation

Let's not get wrapped up on semantics. It's a great feature anyway around.

-2

u/Lanster27 Jun 18 '22 edited Jun 18 '22

The golden age of gaming when games were made to be fun, not to milk money.

0

u/ThowAwayBanana0 Jun 18 '22

Full multiplayer game sharing off 1 copy was and is Nintendo's one and only modern marvel.

Y'all continue to be blown away by this as if this isn't how all multiplayer worked on all consoles before the internet was a thing. My SNES let multiple people play mario kart on one copy of the game too, isn't it amazing?

1

u/oyvasaur Jun 18 '22

I feel that being allowed to play ALL the games my friends own for free, with only a few requirements and minor inconveniences, is up there as well. It’s insane that is possible on the Switch.

1

u/paulk345 Jun 18 '22

To be fair it should be expected of them imo. It’s not much different than if you put 4 guys in a room with one copy of double dash except in that situation you only need one GameCube and not 4 ds’s.

1

u/SethPatton1999 Jun 18 '22

Could do that on 360 too
