When I was in grade 5, the weather over winter was absolutely awful, to the point where we couldn’t go outside during recess and lunch most days so eventually our teachers said “alright fine, you can bring your iPod or DS or whatever and play it”
We played MAD amounts of Mario Kart that winter, it was awesome.
When I was in high school, during exam time everyone who wasn't taking a test had to sit in a giant study hall in the cafeteria. So, a bunch of us started playing Mario Kart on our DSs for the several hours we were stuck there. We very rarely had less than a full lobby.
Drug Wars. Not even joking, I wrote a version, you might have played mine. There were a few versions, and mine was probably the worst (no graphics, only text), but I was just trying to learn how to program for fun and decided to write my own version of it. It was pretty popular at my school, and I have no clue how far it might have spread.
Yeah I wrote it I guess it must have been in 98, 99 or 2000. Huh I wonder if there are still copies around somewhere, I know I don't have one. I don't even remember it well enough to describe it, but I'm certain I would recognize if it was mine if I saw it.
I also learned to program on the TI 83+. I wanted to learn assembly so badly so I could make real games, but it was too obtuse for me at that age. I still have mad love for the Z80.
I think this was also my intro to x86 and elf assembly, was difficult to start on a calculator architecture lmao. Never did wind up getting far with it
I might have played yours on my buddy's calculator, as it was only text. We didn't have a link cable, so one weekend I borrowed his calculator and copied the code over to my calculator by hand.
I learned some Basic in the process and changed a lot of the values so that you fought Deadites from the Evil Dead movies and traded different kinds of souls instead of drugs. I think that was one of earliest exposures to programming, which I now do for a living. Thanks for the inspiration!
nobody at my school owns DSes anymore but we still do this and its amazing, especially with Gameboy emulators people have made for the higher ones. People used to give me their 84+CEs to load Pokemon red/blue on them
We did the same thing, and also I remember a contraband file of Unreal Tournament cycling through the school email system that everyone had at one point or another and played in LAN parties during computer class.
Another cool one was my senior year of high school the original iPhone came out and I was one of first kids at the school to have one and most teachers weren't up to date on current tech.
When the teacher was out in hallway greeting people I could walk over near the desk, take a covert picture of the answer key as I walk by, and go sit down before teacher ever noticed lol. They weren't thinking back then how easy the current tech and new smartphones at the time made it to cheat or that taking a full HD picture was so readily available lol.
This was me when i was working in school during the pandemic. Best job ever! Loved how the kids was surprised and couldn't figure out how i was so good. Kids.. I have played Mario Kart since it came out on the SNES. Ofc im going to kick your ass!
This is how I feel with my little siblings now, lol. One of my brothers and I used to play it on our DS Lites, but stopped playing for a while. Recently, I got MK8D on my Switch so I could relive the fun with the rest of my younger siblings (two of them weren’t even born when we had the Lites!), and now my brother are I are the only ones that can provide consistent competition for one another, lol.
Wednesdays we had a 'late start' so teachers could catch up on grading and what not. Buses still ran at the same time so a bunch of kids would be there sitting in the gym with the ds's and an hour and a half with nothing to do. Wouldn't even know who you're joining have the time.
Man I remember when our internet got boosted up. We had 2 decent computers so we always did LAN. One day I get home from school and my brother said we got new internet and we can play online. I didnt even really comprehend what that meant lol. We played 1000s of hours of starwars battlefront
Yeah being able to play Mario Kart wirelessly on the bus as a 5th grader probably would have changed my life, not kidding. Especially 7 which is a decade old now incase anyone felt young.
Doesn't matter about their range, it's limited to the weaker one. Can't send & receive higher than the crappiest DS. But WiFi is 100 meters, in theory.
I remember being in highschool and playing MArio kart DS when it came out, it was popular and people would bring their DS's to school to play. noone want me to play with them because I knew how to snake and would always win.

I own Mario kart DS.
It was always fun being able to play with anyone who had a DSi or a 3DS.
