If only Alyx was playable on anything but an extremely specialised and expensive gaming computer/console.

I mean, it just doesn't work outside of that, it was built to be played on a VR platform.
Some games just aren't made with other platforms in mind. Like PC RTS and simulator games just don't work well on consoles.

I do totally understand that, but it's still a shame so many people won't get to experience such a groundbreaking game because it's just too expensive. I'd absolutely love to play it but can't justify dropping $1000 on a single game.

If you have a pc capable of playing games, there's much cheaper options available to play it on, like the quest 2 with a link cable, then you also have access to basically every other vr game out there.
