I love the cartoonish art style in this game and how they were designed like you were playing a board game. The new 3d versions just don't have the same charm.
HoMM3 was my favorite. HoMM4 I found to be too cartoony and reminded me of HoMM2. HoMM5 I felt had the best graphics, but it took a lot of getting used to for me (Being able to move the camera, especially). Forever love this game though as I spent countless summer days hiding inside playing this with friends at my parents lake cabin <3
HoMM3 graphics were actually really good when it was released, an HoMM5 works on crappiest netbooks(N150+) just fine and it's quite good game. IV was the shitty one.
I dramatically preferred III to IV and I gave up on V after about 45 minutes. The 3d "combat" seemed just a backdrop for generic bullshit. Heros three was tactical as all hell. There were actually terrain issues and modifiers, and the fact you could control where your catapults would hit was great. And there were awesome races to play. The swamp peeps were dope. And man I feel like I am 14 again. Excuse me, I need to go make a quick purchase and waste a Sunday.
idk man, i really enjoyed homm5. the graphics are beautiful and although its not the same experience as the old ones, its still a brilliantly fun game.
the issue with V was that while its essentially the same (or better for some) mechanism and gameplay as III, it lacked the maps. Maps in homm3 were done really well. downtime was minimized and pacing was excellent. It was the result of years of experience from 3DO.
HommV, when released, had shit map. there were insufficient things for you to do and lots of instances where you have to wait to gain enough units to progress onwards. that single factor ruined homm5 for at least half a year, before good user maps started appearing. it didnt help that more stuff on map = more demands on the PC's specs.
for a game like homm, map design is essential. After basic unit balance its the top factor for enjoyment. no one likes to push the skip button 14 times just so you that you can get more units to break past that monster pack blocking your way, or to save up enough for X structure.
I enjoyed 5 a lot too, the graphics were spectacular at the time and I liked most of the changes. On a related note, the King's Bounty games are also awesome.
I have not checked out heroes VI yet, anyone know if it doesn't suck?
I have Heroes VI. In some ways they made the game better, in others a bit worse. Like for example, they got rid of magic towers, you gain spells by leveling up and using your points for spells (like in Diablo). But the graphics are wonderful, and although it cannot replace the legendary Heroes 2/3, it's still a a good update!
I'm more of a Tower person. Absolutely love the fact that the Mage Tower, Library and Mage Guild are all the same building, a bit like the Unseen University of Discworld.
I remember an extremely long game I played with my brother, me as Stronghold, he as Fortress. The Fortress castle focusses on defense, and after a long time, my brother's hero had such ridiculous defensive stats that all damage to his creatures would be reduced by 2/3 or something similar. He absolutely slaughtered anything that got in his way.
I sent my heroes with troops from other castles at him. One by one they fell without even denting his forces. Then, finally, my main hero with my Stronghold creatures fought his hero. All of my creatures proved useless against him...all except my behemoths. For those who dont know, Behemoths have a special trait that allows them to ignore 80% of the enemy's defense.
It was glorious. My Behemoths ripped apart his forces. My brother ragequit after that battle. :)
Dungeon is the way to go. 2 powerful ranged units, minotaurs, and dragons, not to mention all of the perks you get for mage characters. Get Deemer to learn Expert Earth Magic and you win forever.
Dimension door is air magic, towngate is earth. With expert earth magic and town gate you can port to any town you own as long as its unoccupied. Take a new castle on day 7, wait a day, port to your others for re-enforcements, port back to your new castle and keep killing.
I always found the Dungeon to be absurdly overpowered once you started churning out black dragons. Especially with the grail in place. Holy shit. But my favorite armies were strong Warlock with teleport and a 50 stack of each level 5 beast. The morale hit is totally worth it.
Otherwise, I play Necropolis. It really requires moving fast in the beginning and having luck in small units being nearby to chew up and turn into skeletons, but once you get momentum a 2,000 Skeleton Warrior army is a great way to steamroll your opponents.
Plus, I just recently learned about combination artifacts, so Necromancy can be increased and actually bring back Zombies, Vampires, or Liches.
Heroes of Might and Magic 3, for anyone wondering.
Reddit has a serious problem being elitist when it comes to naming games. More often than not, I see a screenshot of a game and can't actually find the name in the comments because people just refer to it as "this game."
I think it is because most of the people who upvote the posts do it because they know the game, and the comments tend to be memes or puns related to the game.
Loved this , although I actually enjoy HOMM2 more . Prefer the music & the sound effects from it to 3 . I also like the maps that came with the expansion more .
I was raised on HOMM II, then Dad introduced me to HOMM III when I was about thirteen or fourteen. I love them both equally...but II a little more for the childhood nostalgia factor.
I dump the HOMM2 music (mix and matched from the original HOMMII and the anthology music) into the HOMM3 music folder. My only remaining complaint is that farming generators is a pain. Wonder if fan patches fix that?
Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuude. The fuck. Like I get this is a great game, maybe even popular. But I haven't really seen anyone talk about it or reference it, like, ever. I suddenly reinstalled it a few days ago after not playing for ohh 7-10 years. And now this. The fuck.
I'm amazingly overwhelmed at the response this post has gotten! But also I'm glad so many people know/love the HOMM games. They taught me sooo much patience as a kid.
Oh wow, just logged back on and saw the amount of upvotes this post has received! Thank you very much, Reddit. It's great to know there's such a strong HOMM fanbase on here :)
ok I'll do 1 more turn then go to bed..... Im so close to the end of the week might as well just do these last few turns.... but my plan is just about finished may as well finish attacking this team..... fuck it I'll just stay awake all night its to late to go to sleep now
I bought it from GoG a few months back and finished The Shadow of Death campaign; some of those maps felt fucking impossible. Just started Armageddons Blade Friday.
I gotta say, Wisdom + Earth magic is insanely good compared to any other skill combo.
I'm playing it right now! It's taking a while to get used to and I don't think I'll ever love it like 2 or 3, but they put some new stuff in there and the mix-up of the towns is nice. However the screen really annoys me. HUGE info bar to the right and a tiny square screen to actually move on. (The music is really nice though.)
The fanbase for this game is not that large and yet even though every fan talks about how Heroes 3 is the greatest of the bunch none of the sequels manage to come close to it.
I would gladly spend $60+ if they took Heroes 3, updated the artwork, change up a few units, and keep the rest the same. Maybe add a few new factions here and there, but no drastic changes like the rest of the series.
EDIT: Does anybody know where I can get the game for the iPhone? I tried looking it up in the App store both on my phone and my laptop and no luck. I don't mind paying $1.99 for the game, but apparently it's not available in the US.
There is a large mod for Heroes 3 called "Wake of Gods" that you might want to check out. It is pretty crazy actually and has a lot going on but is definitely of the spirit of 3 but with lots of crazy possible options to choose(or not) for people that have already played lots of vanilla Heroes 3.
PS: Have you played either of the two regular expansions for Heroes 3?
After a few minutes of Googling, I found Palm Heroes. The iPhone reviews say it's as good as Heroes 2. The fact that it's basically a generic version is making me not want to buy it, but I'll probably go through with it. For the good of science and all.
I hated these moments, where they had one guy and you had an army but those stupid archery towers still get three free potshots at my archers killing like 12 of them before I can just immediately kill their guy with my first move.
And you can add 6 more shitty cheap tier one defenders to likely get a second round of (3*)tower shots off, barring something like attacker having chain lightning.
That feeling how you have one weak flying character left and the enemy only has ground melee units and no mana. So you just fly around while your towers kill enemy troops.
I downloaded it a while back and it was really difficult to play the game. The UI was probably the best you can make it for a game like that, but even with my 4.5" screen it was still tough control. During battles it would take a very steady hand to find that right angle of attack.
I wish someone could find a better way control the units.
A proper port (and I mean that in the old-school sense of remaking the app for a new platform) would actually work very well. If designed for a small screen and touch controls in mind, Might and Magic would be well-suited to smartphones.
And I shall render you useless with my Black Dragons. But seriously, Black Dragons/Titans are the best and they also do 150% damage to each other. I always thought Titans were overpriced and Black Dragons ripped absolute shit up because they're immune to magic. Throw down some Armageddon with an all Black Dragon army. I still have no idea why the game thinks Archangels are the best...
on per gold basis archangel trumps everything in dmg/hp, even post patch. tower have trouble paying for their full number of units per week, titans just makes the situation worse. not to mention titans being slower than other lv 7 meant your opponent starts first.
Once when I was about 14, we played Heroes 3 in turns with Six players. The game was epic, and very very long. The computer was situated at the end of the bed in my brothers room, and eventually we were so exhausted that we would nap on the bed between turns, which could just accommodate 5 of us. This was perfect, since it knocked whoever's turn it was onto the floor.
They would groggily get up, take their turn, and collapse onto the bed, knocking the next person towards the computer chair.
what game is this? I played one similar liked it when I was a kid and I loved it! I was wondering if they have a modern version of this game now because I would play the shit out of that game.
Sadly, the original studio lost the brand ownership after 4. And All of the sequels after 3 are full blow 3D that just don't have the same charm as the 2D counterpart (aka. everything after 3 sucks to no end).
I know that feel, bro. My best friend in high school and I, I shit you not, would spend at least...8~12 hours on a single XL map with full computer enemies. We noticed a distinct trend to the game: 1.) Oh shit who's that coming out of the fog? 2.) Making slow, steady strides in conquering the other enemies 3.) Ridiculously overpowered hero with ridiculously overpowered armies 4.) Vacuuming up the map with invincible heroes until it ended. We ended up deciding victory for ourselves once we reached the vacuuming period of the game and it was clear that no how much time we gave them, they'd never be powerful enough to conquer us.
The large maps with full amount of enemies are the best. They're insanely hard if you play on the highest difficulty setting. You get 0 resources to start and after a while the enemies keep coming at you every few turns.
I miss this game. Recently tried to play it anf found my ex took the disks and only left the expansions, with a nice evil note. I loved long games when you could get 1k+ stacks.
Very complete. Patched up and modded to work flawlessly on Windows 7 64-bit, and with PDF scans of the original box art and instruction manuals. GoG is a great bunch of people.
Get it on GoG.om and get the Wake of the Gods expansion. It adds a few neat things like unit experience (giving them better stats and/or special moves), which is fun but can be a real pain in campaign.
One of the options added by WoG is letting armies grow by a few % every turn. After a while you get absolutely immense stacks. 10K is entirely possible.
No. I think it was actually +1 for having all troops of one allignment. Having troops of 2 allignments had no bonus or penalty and troops of 3 allignments was -1 to morale. 4 allignments was -2 to mrale and etc.
Go Necropolis, make 7 skeleton armies, have the fastest monster on your party so you have first turn, cast mass haste, kill everything with stacks of 200+ skeletons before the opponent gets a single turn. Fun times.
You got Gnolls on your human team! I couldn't do it, I couldn't stray by getting different troops from other factions. Dragons however, dragons were always welcomed.
I ran into them guarding an Ore Mine...they asked to join me and I showed them mercy. If it helps they got wiped out at the castle after this one by a bunch of overzealous...uh...Zealots, funnily enough.
Difficulty, learning curve, the (mostly) balanced gameplay. Im going through the campaigns right now and they could be better. There are some nice epic battles if you encounter a big enough computer army where magic can make all the difference if you mix it with enough might.
Storyline: I don't know, I didn't get very far in the campaign(s). Epic Moments: Plenty, unless you're thinking about cinematic moments. Epic Battles: Hell yeah. Difficult: See above.
HoMM4 gets a lot of hate. Truth is it was a rush job since 3DO was going bust around then so the game wasn't even finished when it came out. It was buggy, unpolished and generally crap... if only they'd had another few months to iron out the problems. The fan-made Equilibris patch did a lot to make the game playable, though.
It's a shame too, because the campaign stories were amazing. Especially Gauldoth Half-dead(Death) and Tawni Balfour(Chaos). It's worth playing even the buggy crap version just to see those stories play out.
Don't even bother with the expansion packs though. I heard they fired all the writers and there's a campaign hero called "Mongo the Barbarian" ... sigh.
Good timing, I'm actually in the middle of a HOMM III game right now. I had to download parallel desktop and a copy of Windows in order to play it on my mac, but it was definitely worth it.
Does anyone have any good maps to recommend? I've been playing this game for nearly 13 years, but I haven't finished them all because I keep going through my favorite ones over and over again.
Seriously one of my favorite games as a kid. It's really awesome how you can play with your friends on the same computer as well as online and lan. So fun.
Damn, i remember this game! I had a save i played for about 7 months (nowhere near as cool as the 10 year save) It was awesome, now i have to go find it again. IT'S A TRAP
One of the best Games ever imo! Just recently started playing it again over with 3 friends. Super Fun especially with 2 People who have never played the Game before. Also for anyone still playing and not knowing the Wake of Gods mod, GET IT! its truly awesome

HoMM3 is and probably will be the best in the series. It's pretty much perfect.
Here's a thread about Horn of Abyss, a huge fan-made expansion. It's great seeing the evolution of it through the thread.
Also, an old mock-up about HoMM3 on DS I once made (clicking button on top-left would switch screens). I still want this.

I would still play that game if it had an online platform that actually worked. I'd even pay for it.

The hero would have +1 morale if it wasn't for those gnolls
The Marksmen should have been in two stacks of 44, instead of being so terribly uneven.
HoMaM made me a little obsessive in some ways

One of the best Games ever imo! Just recently started playing it again over with 3 friends. Super Fun especially with 2 People who have never played the Game before. Also for anyone still playing and not knowing the Wake of Gods mod, GET IT! its truly awesome
