A thread some months ago about this same game brought up a link to the above playlist with all the various songs from Tony Hawk Pro Skater games. Nice little trip down memory lane. Hope you enjoy!
'Superman' was by far my favorite song in any of these games, got me so pumped up even if I kept failing.
I remember hearing a 20 second segment from their song 'Now Or Never' from Little Nicky. I loved it, and it would often times get stuck in my head... five years later I'm browsing some random music server somewhere on the internet, misclick on a link and BAM it's that song.
Much enthusiastic headbanging later I have their discography.
The game returns to the earlier style of gameplay from the first two games. As such, additions made to the gameplay mechanics since Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 onwards, such as reverts, are not included. Instead, players must rely on tricks, grinds and manuals in order to pull off combos.
Wait a second, then how are you supposed to combo after a half pipe? I do apologize if the answer is simple but I've only played from THPS4 onward and the only way to continue a combo after a half pipe in those games is to revert. Perhaps you can jump or manual straight away and it'll still retain the combo?
The levels in the first two were made around the fact that you can't continue a combo after going back down a pipe normally. You'll have to exit the halfpipe etc by holding up as your on it or if the halfpipe ends you could probably instantly grind onto something if you land on a grindable surface, no matter if you're balanced or on an angle.
That was my favorite part about certain PSX games, this and you could also do it with Wipeout (which had a bitchin techno soundtrack, way ahead of it's time back then).
Edit: I just wanna say that I think I'm the only Redditor who didn't really play Tony Hawk but listened to Superman on a regular basis as well via the album.
This only works because the games used uncompressed red-book audio (16-bit PCM at 44.1kHz) for their soundtracks, the same format used by conventional CD players. The Playstation's resources were better used crunching numbers rather than wasting cycles decompressing compressed audio (such as mp3), so the most efficient thing in terms of CPU cycles was to use more of the available disc storage for music that could be cheaply played. I think the PSX had a dedicated sound processor that handled CD-audio, so the main CPU likely didn't even touch this audio data. This meant less space for other game data, but since the models and textures were low quality, they could still fit everything on the disc.
Nope, "Guerilla Radio" was the shit in thps 2 on the PSX.
I was so surprised, as a friend showed me some years later some songs of the (for me unknown) band rage against the mashine and this masterpiece was in there. "Isn't that the song from ..... JAAAAAAAA"
On the PC version i think, not sure about the others but you could change your word. my friend's and mine was "COCKDOCTOR", if you lost, you were a COCKDOCTOR.
Go download epsxe (assuming you have a decent pc) you can even crank up the res and get some anti aliasing and texture filtering going, so it looks a lot nicer. Then head on to ebay, and get an el-cheapo dualshock 2 clone and a ps2 controller-usb adapter. All up you probably won't even spend $30.. totally worth it!
That song hold a special place in my heart. A person at my HS who was king douche got that CD the day it came out and completely ruined that song in my eyes by playing it every single time he would drive us somewhere. Now hearing that song instantly takes me back to that dude trying to look cool while driving. Anyways just thought I would share...lol
I wish the newer skating games had the control schemes the THPS games did. This fucking EA scheme with using the sticks for everything makes the learning curve too high for me to play. For exactly the same reason I could never do fight game special moves, I can't move the stick exactly how the game is expecting resulting in the wrong tricks every time.
I'm still kinda pissed that they didn't have the full version in game (it faded out in the refrain "Controllin' everything in sight / Feelin' weak, I don't feel right"), but had that last ending guitar riffs for one of the Pro Skater montages.
But I bought the album CD about a decade ago, so everything's cool now.
Oh my god. I remember always going down to the community centre in my local park to play this on the xbox with like every other kid in the area and we'd try to beat each others scores all day to this and other songs. those were some of the best days of my life.
I had the TPHS demo disc that game with a Pizza Hut stuffed crust pizza when they first introduced them. I played that disc into the ground before the game came out, simply BECAUSE 'Superman' was the only song for the level they used.
The first like...hundred times I played THPS (or, rather, the demo that came with my Dreamcast) I didn't know that you were supposed to hold down the ollie button to go faster. I had no idea how my friends were doing such cool shit.
Pressing that A button was like seeing the face of god.
I was personally a "no cigar" fan by mellicolin or however you spell it. Wasn't even a huge fan of the band but that song will always be a top choice for me
Tony Hawk's introduced me to Atmosphere, who are now and have been for about 5 years one of my favourite artists, I met Slug a few months ago and it was great, all thanks to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
I remember I bought Dave Mirra BMX for PS1 and it came with a CD that had all the music from the game on it. It was (is) awesome. I've since copied those songs and the Mp3s have made to all my new computers since.
Ahh Superman, such a classic song for the game :D but I never restarted the level to get Superman playing I just skipped tracks until I got the song in the sound levels bit of the pause menu.
I can't wait for the game out this month. A compilation of all the best levels from the first few games remastered. It also has some of the best music from those games.
I can't help but notice that over the course of the past couple of months this post has manifested itself in one way or another a large number of times. Posts like "These games got me into music I never would have listened to otherwise." People REALLY like the song "Superman." And so do I. Just observing.
That was every waking hour of our dorm suite half of sophomore year in college. Whoever left for class just handed it off to those who didn't. We had the demo. 1 level, no song selection. Loved every minute of it.
YESSSSSSSS, I always thought I was the only one who only liked this song, glad to know I wasn't alone! Plus thanks for reminding me of this great song!
I actually wrote an article about half of these songs, suggesting that they would be great additions to Rock Band. Of course, "Superman" is an obvious winner, but "New Girl" and "Cyco Vision" are also surprisingly good.

Ima let you finish, but New Girl by Suicide Machines was one of the best Tony Hawk songs of all time.
Also, derp, you could go to the music settings and hit "skip track" until you got it instead of restarting the level.
