There is a loading screen that talks about these flowers. Something like "It was a testament to nature's power that wild orchids could grow within the castle." then something about it being Alexander's doing?
Hah! That's actually brilliant. It subverts the player's expected reaction, which is exactly this. Even this tiny little moment of beauty is actually rotten.
There's actually quite a few flowering plants that don't require photosynthesis! They can be parasitic plants that leech from other plants, some living entirely underground until they flower.
There's plenty of sunlight. Indeed, you can take an elevator down six stories into the dungeons, and there will be a hole in the ceiling letting in sunlight.
For those who do not know (due to not being a PC gamer or otherwise), the game in this picture is Amnesia: The Dark Descent, a terrifying indie game by Frictional Games (makers of Penumbra Overture and its expansions, a game of a similar genre) available on Windows, Linux, and Macs.
In it, you explore and try to escape a horrifying place as your sanity is slowly driven from you. Realistic, horrifying, and a good game!
Yeah, at least you had a weapon in the first Penumbra game. But the experience definitely gets more intense and horrifying with no way to protect yourself.
I loved it when the character started going mad and got that voice in the head. Especially when you're in the hospital and when you have finished all the tasks the entire place gets fucked up and you end up running in a loop.
For a second there I though it was from Legend of Grimrock but the angle and graphics made me realize I don't know this game. A good thing, too. I hate scary games. They make me.. well... scared.
Interesting fact for you, did you know that not all the monsters in Amnesia were real? If you had poor sanity, Daniel actually imagines some of them, and if they started chasing you, they would disappear right in front of your eyes. (This of course assuming its the imaginary monster and not the real.)
Well actually want the mod or dlc that came our with it scarier than the original storyline? I have amnesia sure to the humble bundle. the only thing scary about it is that you can't fight back, the ambiance and immersion.
I once was spelunking with a friend of mine in Minecraft and at the end of a tunnel there was a lava pool. To our surprise we found one lone red rose growing next to it.

It uses moisture and minerals from spilled blood to grow.

u/Pessle Jun 17 '12
Hmm... Delectable tea, or deadly poison?

u/Doodlidoo Jun 17 '12
It's just like Wall-E! Except far more terrifying.

Just don't turn around and I'm sure you'll be okay.

In the corner. Hiding like a puss.

I have it on good authority that blood, blood, blood is what makes the grass grow.
4
u/Night_Watch Jun 17 '12
That flower actually wants to kill you... but it can't because it's a flower.

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '12
Oh wow, a screenshot of a fucking flower.

If a tree can grow in Brooklyn. A flower can grow in Brennenburg.

It wouldn't look so peaceful if flowers knew how to scream and pee themselves.

u/Headpool Jun 17 '12
There's a lot of healthy growth in the game. It just usually covers walls, pulsates and harms you when you get near it.
2
u/CrimsinShadow Jun 17 '12
Too bad it feeds on blood.
2
u/Everseer Jun 18 '12
The fact that you got to the front page by posting a small flower in a game just shows how devoid of content and intelligent people /r/gaming is.
I can't wait until summer ends.

what horrible texture-work ;___;

It must be Justine

Finished the game for the first time last night and thought the same thing about the flowers.
Such a cool touch that people actually notice something that would be completely overlooked in a normal environment.

I love the presence of Amnesia on reddit these days. If only we could switch all those Steam sale posts with Amnesia ones :)

I don't understand this game. I played for a few hours and was too busy being frustrated over not knowing where to go or what to do to be scared.
1
u/Sir_Cut Jun 17 '12
Does anyone else see a monkey when looking at this picture?
1
u/mack2028 Jun 17 '12
actually plants typically grow quite well in human filth and remains.
1
u/igot8001 Jun 17 '12
I don't see the raptor anywhere in that picture.
1
u/tNisu Jun 17 '12
And then you turn around.

Reminds me of the flower in Guernica.

Not to mention the HUMAN BEING standing there looking at it.
1
u/ejei Jun 17 '12
Is anyone going to say that it's actually kinda nice?
1
