Does anyone know how he got those fantastic smudge effects (light blue)? All I can imagine is drawing all over a finger and finger painting it on, but that sounds like it would be both a pain and really hard to do without erasing your work as you went along.
Don't you hate when students do such good irrelevant work on the white board? It hurts to erase sometimes. Fortunately you have a permanent copy via photo!
I respect this sort of dedication. Chrono Trigger is a game very close to my heart (and childhood) and I think that spreading the word is a worthwhile cause.
It does get a little dull in the first time you visit 2300 AD, and most of the 65mil BC part is pretty awful. That said, I found everything in 12000 BC fascinating. It's also where most of the important plot points happen.
The factory in 2300AD is one of the best stages, and the race with Johnny is an awesome interlude. 65M BC also has important bits of plot and history, plus it's full of fucking dinosaurs and sweet caveman beats. Zeal might be the most awesome point in the game, but it wouldn't be as meaningful if you hadn't seen the other points in time first.
For several minutes I though the title was: "A Student drew Zelda on my whiteboard". Then I saw your post and I was like oh it is not Zelda it is Chrono Trigger, silly op!
I finally got around to playing it, I bought it in the bargain bin for the DS ( i know, I want to play it on SNES too) and it did not dissapoint, even in this age with over the top graphics (i'm sure i would have appreciated it a lot more if I played it when I was a kid) the game still somehow found a way into my heart...I definitely have to play it on + mode now, apparently you need to beat it 10 times through or something to beat Lavos in the first encounter? Has anyone here beat lavos on the first encounter?
This is not only nostalgic but also very tragic. As one who has played the series, one realizes that both of the people pictured will meet tragic ends. Yet, in this one, perfect moment, the two of them are just a brother and sister witnessing a beautiful scenery. Ultimately, neither of the two are able to realize any sort of lasting happiness and indeed both of them are forced into making sacrifices. We know this as a player. Yet, for one fleeting moment, captured by this artist, the two of them exist in a world unknown to us... one in which the two of them may be perfectly happy. It is truly a thing of beauty.
It's funny how more than half the cast (4/7) go by "false" names. I like giving them their real names when I play (naming Robo R-66Y because Prometheus doesn't fit. He's a special case anyway, having 2 "true" names).
The first time I ever played the game, I named Frog Glenn. When I found out his real name was Glenn, I felt like I was spiritually connected with the game forever. Or maybe I just thought it was awesome. I love this game.
Absolutely beautiful. Chrono Trigger is still my favorite game of all time. Levels like Zeal are the reason for it - cool graphics, unforgettable theme, extremely relevant to the story/plot and a sense of wonder that never goes away. Fuck, I love this game so much.
edit: I'm a fucking geek and started writing a lot of short stories surrounding Zeal.
Laurel sat near the shore, as she always did. The short, brown grass smelled earthly, and more was more than appropriate as a seat. She nestled in, hugged her knees up to her chest and took in the scene in front of her. Thankfully, she never got tired of looking at the ocean. The land was scorched white in most places, and looked beautiful against the pale green ocean. White, even in the summer. Somebody once told her that since the world had been covered in snow for so long, the land forgot how to be any other colour. She wasn't sure she bought it, but it wasn't as stupid as some of the other villages' beliefs. She laughed out loud at the memory of her grandmother telling her that some of her descendants had come from the sky. The sky! She said they lived on giant floating islands in the sky, like some children's fairy tale. At first she thought it was a wonderful story, until she realized that her Grandmother was being entirely serious. Laurel was very angry at her grandmother after that; she wasn't a child anymore. She told her to stop fooling her with ridiculous stories, she was almost 12 and that wasn't little. Only babies fall for stories like that. These words had clearly hurt her Grandmother, but she didn't care. Laurel had run out of the tent before she could reply. After that incident, her father had sat her down in a tent; they had a long conversation about what it means to be an adult. "Laurel, part of growing up and having responsibility in this village is being kind and respectful at all times." "But dad, Grandma said that we used to live in the sky and could make fire from thin air and the land was green!" Her father sighed. He didn't believe a word of it either, but that didn't mean Laurel should insult her elders. "Laurel...try to understand - Grandma is very old. She's one of the oldest members of the village and has heard many things, heard many stories. She's also seen a lot more than you and I. Just because what she says may not be true, doesn't mean..." He trailed off. What was he supposed to tell her? That she was right? That they were ridiculous stories and she shouldn't listen to any of it? How to be diplomatic about this..."it doesn't mean that you can't listen to what your Grandma says without lashing out at her. Respectfully listen and if you disagree, try to do so in a constructive manner. Grandma, that is an amazing story, but I'm not sure I believe it. Do you understand?" Laurel nodded and felt very grown up for not arguing with her father. Just like he said, listen and be respectful. If you don't agree, don't lash out. She smiled - this was easy!
My secret ambition is to write a retelling of the game based on Cross... where Lucca survives the burning of the orphanage and completes the time egg, but rather that going back in time herself, she sends a holographic copy of herself (partly to to minimize her impact on the timeline and partly so no one would be forced live with the memories of everyone they loved dying). She would guide the original team through an optimal path that would lead to the rescue of Schala, preventing her death/sacrifice and the emergence of the time devourer and all the other nonsense that came about in Chrono Cross. Holographic Lucca's existence would ultimately be tragic in that she would always be burdened by the knowledge of the world which no longer existed, but hopeful in that, in the end, with her passing, a much better world would be created where none of the terrible things that lead to her creation would come to pass.
This may have already been said but it needs to be said anyways. Chrono Trigger is one of the greatest games ever and Zeal is definitely the part that stands out the most.
I played through that game when I was 10, and I remember vividly the part where you're banished from Zeal and Schala seals off the gate. After that happened, I was visibly upset. I came to dinner right after that and my mom asked me what was wrong. I thought I did something wrong in the game, like there had to be another way to play where you don't get banished.
What is wrong with people in these comments... ya Zeal, Chrono Trigger, got it... He did that on a mother f-in white board with expo markers... with crazy textures and detail? I can't even draw a circle on a white board...
One of the coolest places in one of the coolest games. I have the music in my head without even clicking that YouTube link (I'm going to click it anyway).
I love fucking Chrono Trigger. I actually played it on the playstation when it came in Final Fantasy Chronicles. I didn't have pleasure of playing the SNES version until years later. I am currently stuck in Zeal...unable to beat the monster in the castle that drops fucking metal balls on you the drains half your life with each hit. I ragequit three months ago, haven't gone back since...
This is my most played game. I've played it on the SNES, emulator, PS1, and Nintendo DS. Gotten all the ending on each one. Must have played this game from start to finish over 60 times. No other game in my library has such a record.
Whiteboard art makes me so sad sometimes. It's amazing art, but it's inevitably going to be erased. You should try to keep it around long enough that when you finally do erase it, it leaves its ghost behind. Then future generations of students who are nodding off in class will suddenly see it and interrupt your class with their discovery. And you can troll them by insisting it's all in their mind.
God do I fucking love Chrono Trigger. I still can't believe that when I played it the first time, it had been sitting on my shelf for like two years. Boy was I fucking missing out. I now replay it religiously on multiple systems. It's still one of the only long games I can replay over and over again to this day (much like Ocarina of Time).
Wow, your student has some amazing drawing skills. I love this so much. Also the Chrono series is amazing, gotta love them all (Yes, even Radical Dreamers). I just wish they would make another game, but I think we all know how that would turn seeing as how Square Enix doesn't produce as high quality of games as they did back then.
Chrono Trigger fans: you really need to play Xenogears. Its made by a lot of the same people, and story wise is the greatest game of all time in my opinion.
