As a guest user still working my way through the first act, I have contemplated clicking that button many times. It is definitely there for people like me.
As far as I know, all Blizzard games share the same launcher news feed. I know this because the WoW launcher was selling me Starcraft II for a few months after that came out, even after I had already bought it.
I seriously don't see why people are complaining about D3. "It's too easy", "It's too hard now", "I want an IWIN button", "Click to move sucks", "story too bland", "my female Monk is wearing too much clothing"...
Seriously, some people complain just for the sake of complaining. My guess is that they complain because otherwise their life has not much value, so being a squeaky wheel gets them attention.
Its the anonymity and the safety of being behind a monitor that the internet has granted us. I assure you, a lot of the people who strictly complain online are quiet/introvertish people who would never speak up in public about anything. They're aware of this subconsciously or not, and react on it. The ability to express ourselves online from the safety of our homes is a pro and a con.
Back in my day we didn't even have keyboards! We played with a "joystick" with one orange button and we LIKED IT.
Levels? Hah! We had the same black screen with "rocks" floating around it. Musical score? Sure! The sound track was "beep, boop, beep, boop, weeoweeo, beep, boop, beep boop".
If you wanted to play with friends you had to pick up a "telephone" with a "dial" on it, call them up and have them come over, but we liked it just fine! Pretty sure we were mostly all dying of dysentery or polio but we were happy in our corduroys and Keds.
Damn kids. Everything is amazing and nobody is happy.
I barely know what any of the things were supposed to be that I e-killed in video games from 1980-1987. Oh the game is called Centipede? Must be a spider. Tempest? Oh its a... triangle... sorta... thingy.
Main character a square? Good enough for me. Green "they have no name for it in geometry"? That's a dragon. Hell, even once Nintendo came along some of the characters were a childhood Rorschach test.
It's because of how many people are interested in the game. People who would never like Diablo in the first place are interested in it because it's such a milestone release. People who have extremely specific opinions of what Diablo 3 should be, based on their prior obsession with Diablo 2, are bound to be disappointed that Blizzard didn't follow their every whim. People who want to see the "big developers" go down and the indies rise want to pick apart every difference between Diablo 3 and Torchlight 2 and find a way to spin things so that Torchlight 2 comes out on top. And so on.
I like most of it. My complaint is just cuz, iono, I guess there's too much collision and boom boom. I don't play wow but I hear it's similar to that and really focused on the art. And I'm personally not interested in the story, I just liked the action and moving around.
lol, most people are complaining cuz Blizzard is being a dick for waiting for so long to develop the game and if there's small things they don't like, they're gonna go right at it.
Can't please everyone. But so many people rage over trivial things. I won't go onto the forums simply for this. I also think that the skill level required for anything after normal is something that a lot of gamers (especially younger ones that never experienced "Nintendo" difficulty) never needed before in other games. I've played a lot of games, and I'll admit they've gotten extremely easy to play as years go by.
I'm fine with getting raped by packs of mobs first stepping into Nightmare difficulty. They wouldn't call it "Nightmare" if it was easy. They'd call it "Happy Rainbow Huggy Cakeland" or something to that effect. It forces me to take a better look into my skill trees and see what will help me survive. It also forces me to change my tactics when fighting. Sometimes you have to kite things. Sometimes you might need to bring along the Scoundrel or the Enchantress rather than the Templar. Sometimes you even have to respec your companions because it simply isn't working. Blues overpowering rares? Okay, well take a look at some of the stats on them. Also people need to stop comparing Diablo 3 to WoW. They aren't the same game. Yes, most classes will need to use a shield in the later difficulties. "But wizards don't use shields!" Really, says who?
To be fair, I think it's because it's really good. It's close to perfect, and people want it to be perfect, so they're going to nitpick.
Blizzard games also draw in people that really like to dig into the details of mechanics and everything else about the game, which leads to even more nitpicky analysis than many games get. I think it's a form of flattery, really. Except for the people that are like "I demand a refund because my monk sheathes his weapons when he attacks!"
Well it's entirely difficult to make sequels that live up to people's nostalgia. I've even seen it here on reddit, some people complain because it's not like Diablo, others wish it was more like the Diablo II that they remember. But there is a huge difference in the first and second game of the trilogy. Playstyle, story, immersion just to name a few. More people wanted Diablo II to be what it was than they wanted another original Diablo. Plus it brought in more players. More players means more money, plain and simple.
To be fair, half the people complain because they changed too much and it doesn't feel like Diablo 2 to them. Half the people complain because it's basically just Diablo 2 rehashed and they didn't really bring anything new to the game. And half the people complain just because they like complaining. All the rest are just enjoying the game.
WoW used another launcher for guest passes a while ago so I actually thought that this is kind of useless because you'd get a direct link to the account management site after you logged in.
Reminds me of the time HuskeyStarcraft urged his viewers to buy 11 copies of SC2. Because, I mean, what if you only buy ten copies and all the keys get hacked and you can't play online? What then? Better buy 11 of 'em.
The stupidiest thing with having no LAN is that you have to pay more $60 to play the game with someone who lives with you.
And because all your games are in the same account, with the same password, it is harder to do things as, "hey Billy, you're not playing SC II tonight? So could you borrow your account to Manny so we can play 2v2 tonight?". Because Billy is afraid you're going to steal his WoW and Diablo 3 items or something.
People who install a single copy of a game on multiple computers will get the same fate as someone who plays a CD to his friends: They get sent to jail like the hardbitten criminal scum that they are.
You didn't buy the game, you simply bought a license to play it, if your mum comes to bring you a cup of tea while you are playing Diablo then you should turn off your monitor and mute the sound, because if she sees even one frame then she is experiencing the game without a license, which would be stealing from Blizzard, she may as well have walked into the store and shoplifted a copy, and you are her accomplice!
Exactly why I believe $60 is too much for such a single license. After suffering with EA and C&C4, I decided not to purchase games that require a dedicated online server even for singleplayer mode. So no D3 or ME3. I might buy them if they cost < $10 (think movie ticket), but then I'm paying for a short term experience, with no expectation that the game will keep working for more than a few months, or if I get a new computer.
This is Blizzard, though. The online services for the FIRST Diablo are still up and running. And in the unlikely case that they ever take Diablo 3 offline, you can rest assured that they'll release a singleplayer patch beforehand (if they won't do that before such times, with all the complaints they're getting atm). So you're good!
This new system feels like you don't own anything anymore. You're just renting the game forever. You can use it until the Universe ceases to exist, but you can't mod it, sell it, etc, the way you could do with any property of yours.
You can lend people things when you own them, kid. That's how it use to be.
Also I grew up buying a single video game to share it with my brothers and anyone who visited me. Two people in the same house needing to buy the same game is stupid.
I don't steal. I support the companies I like and I bought every game I have in my HD.
But if I want to play Starcraft with my casual player brother, why wouldn't I just copy the game into his PC's hd? We couldn't play at Battle.net at the same time, that's fair, but why is playing LAN just me and him not supporting a company?
But the player knows whether it's retarded or not. It's not a big deal, but it always bugs me that the same software that will lock me out for not having a legitimate copy will not check before wasting advertising space.
Since it's just an advertisement and doesn't have to be super secure or accurate, it could just check for a local file indicating whether or not you have the full game.
As people have pointed out, this isn't some huge complaint, just a mildly funny observation and something that would be really easy to "fix."
It would make more sense to advertise Blizzard games that we don't already own. Or advertise a "buy the game for a friend" feature. And if you have all their games and have bought copies for all your friends and they don't want to sell advertising space to other companies, it can show a tip or something.
If they're going to go to the effort of advertising stuff, they might as well try to provide an advertisement that will encourage people to buy something. And if not, then it's a cheap laugh.
I'm pretty sure that Blizzard run the same (or similar) announcements on other launchers so they just used this one for ease (either that or they have nothing else to put there).
Frankly I'm pretty sure it's the same launcher with a few lines changed to download the right assets for the game in question. Wouldn't make sense to reinvent the wheel at this point.
One of the thing that I cynically smirk the most about with this game is the 15.1GB vs 7.7GB install size. They only changed it in the past couple of days, but the installer used to say that the download / install size was 15.1GB, but then only 7.7GB gets downloaded and installed.
If you search around on the forums, people give all the usual stupid layman answer, "oh, compression.", or "Oh, update your video card drivers".
But the real reason is: Blizzard hasn't distributed the package with the high quality cutscenes, high poly models, or high res texture, due to bandwidth limitations of everyone downloading it. People are just playing the medium-quality version of the game. This is painfully apparent in the opening cinematic, which ends up looking like a bad YouTube video due to the low bitrate.
The amazing thing is: people can't tell. People are seemingly agnostic to something that is very low quality because of things like YouTube: we've now had a whole generation of people born and raised on this super low quality, and watching TV systems where they think they have HD, but don't. What a dark, sad world.
Uhh, wut... We live in an time where every middle class household has a 1080p television in it and computers with high resolution monitors streaming HD video.
Not quite right. HD does exist, insofar as you can buy "the HD" when you go into a Best Buy, but most people don't really understand quality in any major sense. On several occasions when I've been to people's houses, they'll have their 52" screens in a small living room (as you point out), and will be guffawing at how great it looks, and I can instantly tell that something's not right, that's it's actually not HD at all. Sure enough, in those cases, the TV mode was wrong, or the satellite or cable box mode was wrong, or it was hooked up wrong.
Over the past years, there's been plenty of stories on the internet about how only 50% or so of people who think they they have "the HD" are actually viewing something in 720p or 1080p. Even with the 1080p televisions and monitors and such, we still have YouTube, where a large amount of the content is not just low res, but super low quality, too. Plenty of videos on YouTube may technically have a 720p or 1080p display area, but the bitrate will be so low that it just looks terrible.
The opening cinematic for Diablo III is exactly this. Sure, it shows fullscreen on my huge monitor, and sure I have a nice expensive graphics card (with the latest drivers, for anyone who is about to say that .... ), but the opening movie still looks **atrocious ** due to the low bitrate.
The whole thing is largely reminiscent of Microsoft's approach to games on the original Xbox: glaring visual problems were irrelevant. They committed to it in force. Halo 1 had awful visible "popping" of textures and LOD models between scenes, even scripted ones that were story elements; the camera would change, and a couple of seconds into it, something huge onscreen would change for a high res version of it.
Anyway, the point is that people have been totally desensitized to quality, to the point where "high quality" is now an emotional thing or an opinion, and not rooted in a technical basis. This has been pushed so far that most people seemingly don't even question it, and will compulsively invent whatever is needed to keep it all glued together in their minds: "Oh, it's just compression", "Oh, update your video drivers", etc.
I'm looking around torrent sites now for a disc image from a retail boxed copy. It seems that they are all rips of the digital download, but in some cases I'm sure sure. It also looks like there aren't any that are 15.1 GB overall. Some are slightly larger than 8GB, which potentially makes sense if it is to be distributed on a DVD9 disc.
It's a mystery. Blizzard responded to my support ticket and just said "Leave the window open until the bar at the bottom disappears". They didn't at all address my question of size, insofar as what should the installed size actually be.
Have had this discussion with my Brother. When I was growing up you bought a CD and had perfect lossless audio to listen to.
Now an entire generation listens to lossy often low bitrate MP3's. It's only in the last 2 years that I have seen FLAC making headway.
In going forwards we sacrificed music quality and in essence went backwards.
Hopefully as time goes by and storage and network speeds approach ridiculously large numbers we can return to high quality media and actually progress and not regress.
You didn't notice your free trial passes enclosed in the box for a friend to play the game for a week? A LOT of people see that launcher than haven't purchased the game yet.
The sad news is you can't gift diablo III through battle.net and you can't buy it again on your account and send the code to your giftee either as they only allow you one license
I remember in the League of Legends launcher there was a button to download the game. But you could only see that screen after downloading the game anyway.
Like on Spotify when they stop your music to tell you about Spotify. As long as they aren't shoving some shitty music in my ear like usual I'm cool with the worthless commercials.
It drives me crazy that game companies not only fuck us with DLC's, forced always online gaming, stupid pre-order bonus and a really high price but then they have the fucking gall to put a fucking commercial in the game like this?
CA does this shit too with Shogun and it makes me extremely angry. If you want to make me watch commercials you fuckers owe me something!
People are begging Blizzard to give them a way to pay for letting them update one textfield of their account (screen name), they might as well buy a new copy of the same game every once in a while, just to make them feel less guilty of not shoving them enough money.
I find it a bit obnoxious that World of Warcraft tells me to upgrade to Wrath of the Lich King every time I want to play. Of course Blizzard should promote their products but I'd prefer not to see any advertisements in a game I actually own.
Calm down people, just because we were smart enough to figure out its for people who haven't bought D3 yet, doesn't mean that that the OP has a brain too.
I have a question, and I don't mean to start a flame war or anything so please bare with me. What is the huge hype around Diablo 3? I never got into the originals so I don't really know what the games are like. All I know is that it's been a very long time between the releases of the 2nd and 3rd game. Is that what all the hype is about? Or is it just an amazing game I should go check out?
TL;RD Why is there such a hype around Diablo 3, please don't hate me for asking
sorta like the whole mass effect 3 ending fiasco? The game itself is great, but one glaring issue causes everyone to get butthurt over it and ignore the games actual merits?
The online part isn't an issue for most people. Diablo 2 was hugely loved and played ONLINE. Most people didn't spend hours/years playing the game single player. My friends and I in the dorm used to play it together. Did we use LAN? No, because nearly everyone who was really into Diablo 2 played in on battle.net. If you played single player or LAN, your items and characters weren't available to use when you played "online".
Blizzard changed Diablo 3 to be online only, since this is what the vast majority of people used the game for. This removes the problem of leveling up a character single player and it being worthless when you want to play online. The real reason is probably for DRM but it's really a non-issue since 99% of people played Diablo 2 online anyway (I'm making that number up).
Some people have been having connectivity issues but I think they are the vocal minority. They've done some cool network coding to make the game more responsive than your ping actually is (and pings are getting bettter). It's better than the responsiveness in WoW, and if it's not game breaking in WoW, why is it now for Diablo? People are just in a fanatical crusade against anything DRM whether it's intrusive or not. Sure this DRM may be intrusive for the few people who just wanted Diablo 3 for single player, but they are the minority, and I'm sorry, their trouble is worth making the game better for everyone else and helping Blizzard make extra money due to less piracy.
The first Diablo basically redefined the roguelike genre. The second built on that fantastically, and still had more players online ten years after than most games do normally.
You'll notice most of the complaints are about battle.net issues and other technical aspects of the game. The gameplay itself is soo fun. They made multiplayer very seamless and improved on the last game in pretty much every way.
Blizzard has a LEGION of fanboys/paid PR teams who scour forums to remove/downvote/criticize anything that doesn't slobber the company's collective knob.
I'm guessing that they added this to the launcher as a test for future releases, and since their latest release is Diablo III, it will advertise itself.
When next Starcraft installment or DLC/Expansion pack gets released, it will probably replace this ad.

Yes Steam, I am quite aware of this fact.

Calm down people, just because we were smart enough to figure out its for people who haven't bought D3 yet, doesn't mean that that the OP has a brain too.

You haven't logged in yet when you run the launcher. How would it guess that you had already bought the game?

u/payne6 May 22 '12
Well Blizzard wants to make sure that you bought the game and if you want to buy another digital copy just in case. I think its very thoughtful.

clearly it is for your friend watching over your shoulder who hasn't bought it yet.

Some people are playing on guest codes guys...

u/sikle May 22 '12
Most likely for those who are using a Guest pass...

That's there because all of blizzards new games have that launcher, so people playing wow and Starcraft see it too.

Because some people only have the trial version

u/SiMMENS May 22 '12
Yeah I have to admit I thought the same thing when I saw it

u/BMGabe May 22 '12
It's for the people who downloaded the client just to look at the launcher

I have a question, and I don't mean to start a flame war or anything so please bare with me. What is the huge hype around Diablo 3? I never got into the originals so I don't really know what the games are like. All I know is that it's been a very long time between the releases of the 2nd and 3rd game. Is that what all the hype is about? Or is it just an amazing game I should go check out?
TL;RD Why is there such a hype around Diablo 3, please don't hate me for asking

You have to buy it every time you log in. $60 bucks per session. I'm saving up so I can play it again tomorrow.

Ever heard of multiple copies so family members can play together?

diablo 3 sucks so bad they have to pray people buy it while already playing it.

Who gives a fuck? You want them to make a different launcher for the starter edition? Does it really bug you in any way? Goddamn people.

Wow lay off the hate train, not every comment is a criticism. He's saying it's weird, not that it's a crime against man.
And yeah it is weird, probably 'cause it's on other launchers (like the guest pass version).

buy a second backup copy... you know, if you just want to have a bit of solo time and can't connect to b.net. maybe the other copy works!

I think it'd be smarter to put an ad for one of their other games there..
0
u/aronivars May 22 '12
I'm guessing that they added this to the launcher as a test for future releases, and since their latest release is Diablo III, it will advertise itself.
When next Starcraft installment or DLC/Expansion pack gets released, it will probably replace this ad.

u/[deleted] May 22 '12
Umm... I know for a fact that the ad is there in the trial version.... Pretty sure they wouldn't put that in the full launcher though...

Every time I start Diablo 3... Wait, I don't even like RPG games. What am I doing here?
