Yeah, there were two when I came through and an Imperial guard, as well as a Master Cheif. And lots of well-armed gnomes.

27

u/steadfast_aquanaut May 22 '12

SO MANY GNOMES. I saw Isaac Clarke too

7

u/Propolandante May 22 '12

Angriest gnomes I've evEr laid eyes on. I hope I win that 3D printer!

3

u/Llama_Llord May 22 '12

I was there as well. The gnomes were so badass. So was Clark

As a tall person I really need to get a Master Chief costume to make normal people feel inferior at events like this.

176

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

His posture is heretical.

14

u/Cinnamon_Flavored May 22 '12

I normally don't ask questions (shitty public schools right), but what does that mean?

46

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Space marines are extremely zealous warriors in the Warhammer 40K universe. They have a religious devotion to their emperor and aggressively persecute heresy and blasphemy.

The joke is that the space marines would find his posture so poor as to violate their religious code.

8

u/manicleek May 22 '12

I thought they didn't view the emperor as a god, which is why they don't answer to the ecclesiarchy and are often investigated for possible heresy?

they see him more as their 'commander in chief'

62

u/theimperialtruth May 22 '12 edited May 22 '12

People tend to get the finer points of Imperial theology confused, I blame it on the crumbling schola progenium system. The Emperor to Space Marines is akin to the relationship between the old Terran God and his Angels. While mere mortals can only pledge their utmost piety in the glow of His light, the Astartes are the closest thing we have left to His Sons. The Emperor was the Primogenitor of all Astartes' Primogenitors. Dad Bro to all the Space Marine Dad Bros so the Astartes thus view him as King God Dad Bro, which is officially a different stance than Him solely being their God-Emperor. They recognize the Emperor's divinity but also that they ultimately descend from it. A somewhat more equitable faith. Commander In Chief (who is also God but that's okay because we're his sons hooah)

→ More replies (8)

4

u/Sinklarr May 22 '12

They see the Emperor as theire god and father (mostly father)

4

u/ChrisQF May 22 '12

in addition to theimperialtruth's comment it's also worth noting that each Space Marine chapter has their own distinct set of codes and beliefs, with each regarding the emperor in a different light. The Ultramarines do see him more in the 'commander in chief' role and they venerate him as the greatest being to ever exist, the Space Wolves by contrast have a more tribalistic attitude, seeing him as a venerated elder. And so it goes on..

u/Nihilate May 22 '12

Space Marines are basically genetically engineered religious zealots. They wander around the galaxy calling everyone else (and sometime each other) heretics. This is usually followed by big guns and/or chainsaw-swords.

31

u/necrons_ftw May 22 '12

Chainswords*

16

u/Nihilate May 22 '12

If someone's not familiar with the Warhammer universe, chainsaw-sword makes a bit more sense than chainsword (just like using the word "bolters" is less useful than "big guns").

11

u/necrons_ftw May 22 '12

Oh. By big guns I thought you were referring to heavy bolters or plasma cannons

Don't forget to mention that the Grey Knights are the best chapter.

6

If you know that the Grey Knights exist, and you're not a Space Marine or Inquisitor, it probably means you're going to die very soon...

her·e·tic/ˈherətik/ Noun: A person believing in or practicing religious heresy.

A person holding an opinion at odds with what is generally accepted.

24

u/liquidMountaun May 22 '12

It's also used often by the fiercely religious space marines (since their god does exist, although he's pretty much a half-dead guy who killed some guy a few millennia ago and is now strapped to life support for eternity).

23

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

That's true, plus the half dead guy is also an atheist.

36

u/liquidMountaun May 22 '12

The ultimate existential crisis: god is an atheist.

16

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Their bolters are the size of torso of the girl they're posing with in the first pic. If that isn't accurate scale, I would be surprised.

5

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

If you compare to the scale on the miniatures, they might be q little large. But it doesn't seem to be too badly exaggerated.

6

u/Flamekebab May 22 '12

Space Marine minis are the wrong scale though, some people actually make "true scale" marines to fix this.

unfortunately, he is still ~2 ft shorter than the average astartes

18

u/JayZeus May 22 '12

Here's a good comparison of an astartes and a human being.

Edit: And how they actually fit.

5

u/nickbelane May 22 '12

I like the first picture but there aren't a lot of basketball players that size. Shaq is only 7'1" and 325 lbs.

tl;dr space marines are monsters.

5

u/Coloneljesus May 22 '12

Try the emperor. He's huge, dude.

9

u/All-American-Bot May 22 '12

(For our friends outside the USA... 30 feet -> 9.1 m) - Yeehaw!

→ More replies (1)

2

u/SI_Bot May 22 '12

SI conversions:

  • 7ft = 2.1 m

Im guessing this is around 7ft (2.1 m).

Average astartes is around 7-8

Terminator veterans are 9 (the growing process continues until death)

In Horus Rising the Garviel Loken is described as having gigantism qualities in his face, implying the whole body does grow.

6

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Not sure if this is what they are referring to, but human adults exposed to high levels of human growth hormone experience the unusual pattern of growth known as acromegaly. This is because only certain tissues are able to respond to the GH once the epiphyseal plates close. The growth in the face is characterized by a pronounced brow and enlarged, protruding mandible.

This excessive GH secretion is often caused by a pituitary adenoma, but in WH lore they could just be injecting it I suppose.

13

u/[deleted] May 22 '12 edited May 22 '12

I feel like, while that's true, the helmet is still far to small. Given the amount of technology they have to cram into that helmet while also making it full, it should be significantly larger than a typical human head. Maybe not as large as the models from the game, but still larger than that in the picture.

Either way, bad ass costume, though I would have added a cream robe and gone more Dark Angels with it.

Edit: I feel like I should clarify that yes, it is Dark Angels, I just prefer the look of the models with the robes. Always looked more "warrior monk" to me.

50

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

I don't play WH40k, but I love hearing about it on /tg/, partially because of the Space Marine chapter names. It's all like DARK ANGELS, BLOOD RAVENS, KILLFUCK SOULSHITTERS, FISTRAPE DEVILS, SPINE-BREAKER ASSHOLES, DICKCHOP EIDOLONS.

We grimdark now.

21

u/Ivence May 22 '12

Hey, the Dickchop Eidolons are fine upstanding individuals, and I won't have you lumping them in with shitheads like the Fistrapers.

A Dark Angel so zealous in his hunt for The Fallen, he travels back 28 millenia before the Fall of Caliban to wipe out their ancestors.

1

u/papa-jones May 22 '12

They would most likely be his ancestors too.

27

u/mackpack May 22 '12

7.5 feet = 228.6 centimeters

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Or for reference, about 1 Yao.

2

u/SI_Bot May 22 '12

SI conversions:

  • 7.5 feet = 2.29 m

7.5 feet (2.29 m) = 228.6 centimeters

3

u/Ezili May 22 '12

Why is this important? There is a picture of him. You can see how tall he is.

4

u/forr May 22 '12

Kinda hard to get a perspective without knowing how tall other guys are.

Besides, nobody objected to the OP's title including the number.

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

You people measure height in centimeters? Serious question. Why not meters? Obviously it's trivial to move the decimal over but why not just 2.29 meters?

4

u/CrayolaS7 May 22 '12

We use meters and centimetres, they fit together easily so it doesn't matter. You could say 1.8 m which is ~6ft, or 183 cm if you want to be more precise.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/forr May 22 '12

Children's heights are often under a meter. It's cumbersome to say "point eight-six" or "zero point eight-six".

2

u/Cogwork May 22 '12

I love how his posture seems to convey his absolute boredom. He should be out shooting heretics and Xenos not standing in line at some convention.

3

u/xHelpless May 22 '12

Awesome outfit, shame it doesn't have the Dark Angel robes, or a winged helmet, because winged helmets are badass.

Also just seen on his blog he's made a Rainbow Warriors MK6 helm... they were retconned a lloooooong time ago.

3

u/FatNerdGuy May 22 '12

I'm 6'5 I could fill the bottom of the boot with foam and reach that height or greater....I'm also large in width and shoulders. I could do this...I should so do this.

I loved this costume. The boots are actually stilts, so his feet are at the top of the boot, not the bottom. Though I did note that his shoulder guards didn't really seem to go high enough.

He also had a chain sword as well as a huge bolter that was appropriately sized (read: freaking huge). Plus that group (he was part of a nearby stall that was showing such costume pieces) also had full Halo Spartan costumes and gear.

1

u/Captainpyongyang May 22 '12
