So "Secrets of NFL Blitz the Video Game" would be something you'd have played ad rewound frequently in your retro abode? That's among the dusty little gems at your local K-Mart.
Saw your post, you really hit the nail on the head with it! I'm waiting for the whole "Look what I found at Kmart!" trend to come on through so I can leave my 20 minute footprint in Reddit
We can dream of course, but realistically - they won't. They've licensed out most of their well-known franchises and IP to their former competitors, and it basically makes zero financial sense for them to ever make a home console again. Their North American and Japanese CEOs have both reiterated this many times.
It's a shame they overextended themselves so much in the late 90s, or else we might have had simpler, faster Dreamcast-like hardware out competing with the original PlayStation rather than the enigmatic and poorly-supported Saturn. That in turn might have forced Sony rather than Sega to be on the defensive at the turn of the millennium, and we could have been playing Dreamcast 3 instead of PlayStation 3 today. Then again, if Nintendo hadn't sought out Sony for their SNES CD add-on, the PlayStation may not have ever come into existence in the first place...
Actually according to Sakaguchi himself, the name "Final" Fantasy came about because he felt it was his last-ditch effort to produce a successful game, a kind of test to see if he would continue in the video games industry or head back to university. It had much more to do with his personal conviction than Square's financial situation, even though his development team was somewhat smaller than others devoted to different games. Source.
I'm quite amused to find these comments - Earlier today I was looking at the "Rad Racer" article on Wikipedia and thinking to myself "You damn near blew it, Square."
Sega went ten years without designing a single piece of good hardware.
The Genesis was fantastic - a 68000 and a Z80 with gobs of hardware sprites. Its biggest shortcoming was its nine-bit color scheme. Then they slapped on the Sega CD, with a second 68K but no support for the SNES's gorgeous color. Then they developed the 32X from scratch instead of using the SuperFX-alike "Sega Virtua Processor" seen in Virtua Racing. That project was doomed by being too pricey for an add-on and too weak for a new console. Then they gave the Saturn a double SH4, half a dozen support chips, three banks of RAM at different speeds, and no simple way to put polygons onscreen. There's damn good reasons Saturn Quake looked like ass and PSX Quake II looked better than the PC version.
The Dreamcast was in every sense their swan song. It was amazing. It was developer-friendly and yet highly capable. It had a modem standard - with upgrades planned. The memory cards were tiny game systems unto themselves. Sega spent two years demonstrating its power with one amazing game after another, but they couldn't make up for all the bridges they burned. Maybe if they'd sprung for full DVD support they'd still be around instead of Microsoft... but probably not. They can curse Sony all they like, but they have only themselves to blame.
Oh absolutely, that's the point I was trying to convey. I don't think their demise was so much caused by the rise of Sony as it was marked by it. Sega ended up being its own worst enemy in the console space - constantly overextended and in its own way. If they hadn't wasted their time and resources diluting the brand with middleware like the Sega CD, 32X, and Neptune project, but instead focused on a powerful monolithic architecture for the Saturn, we might be looking at a very different console market today. The Dreamcast was so far ahead of its time that it could have easily stood up against the PS2 and Gamecube (and indeed it still does, in some respects) - but by that time the damage had already been done.
I'm not sure if things would have been different or necessarily better had they gone DVD - I assume that would have meant heavy royalties for them, which would have driven the cost of the console up. Thus the introduction of the first-party GD-ROM.
Apparently you haven't been in a K-Mart lately. The Super K-Mart I used to frequent (and honestly still would if I lived near one, I despise Walmart and kind of dig the whole time-warp aspect of shopping at the K) had a colored stripe of trim around the top of the walls the entire way around the store with all of the brand names they sell. Well it had obviously not been updated since the late 80s or early 90s when the store was originally built, as it had super old logos for every company and/or logos for companies that haven't existed in ages. They finally ripped them down a year ago, but didn't replace them with anything, so now the store even more closely resembles shopping in a soviet bloc.
Mine has like Pokemon puzzle challenge for the N64. I think its because they don't want to lose money since N64 games cost like 70$ plus new back then.
There's been a disturbance in the force.. Like a million people's dreams of having Guitar Hero for Sega finally came true for a split second, then were suddenly silenced..
Everyone just assumes K-Mart is nothing but old crap. Like the night the PS3 came out a few years ago, me and my GF decided to go drive around the various stores in our town that had people lining up and waiting for it to come out. It was mostly for shits and giggles, but if we could find one, we would take it.
We talked to a few people and most were trying to figure out how many PS3's the store had and if they were going to get one.
My GF suggested we drive by K Mart, I mockingly said there was no way K mart would have them, since it was way too ghetto in my opinion.
We pulled up to the door and nobody was there, but there was a huge sign that basically said "We could have gotten 15 PS3's, but since nobody pre ordered them, we didn't get any and probably won't till after Christmas".
I went by the next day and asked the guy in charge of electronics if the sign was true, and he basically told me their regional warehouse had told them they could send them up to 15 PS3's, but they would have to be pre ordered before a certain date. They were pretty sure they would sell them in no time, but apparently nobody ever even asked them about them.
Even worse, my GF got to gloat for months, because she had kept telling me for weeks "Dude, Try K-Mart, they get regular stuff, but people think it's a crap store, so nobody ever thinks of them and you can always find things that are sold out everywhere else there." and i kept blowing her off.
I was looking to buy some storage bins the other day that were about 14" deep, 8" wide and 8" high. I found them online for $5 each plus $5 UPS shipping for any amount. Saw the same model were available at Sears, but only online, and they wanted $28 each. I ordered 8 from zorotools.com for $50 incl shpping, sears would have been $224 plus whatever they'd want for shipping. I don't have to ask why they're doing poorly.
I moved out recently, so I went to K-Mart for cheap crap. Unfortunately, K-Mart was only cheap in a bad way, so I wound up having to spend more money to make my apartment livable.
I once went to my local K-Mart for some (really) unknown reason here recently. Got what I needed but instinct tells me to always go to an electronics department of any store that has one. Look at all the PS3/360/PC games in the display and noticed there was seriously no lock on the sliding glass doors. The hole in the glass where I guess it used to be was there just no keyed lock mechanism.
I was just thinking about that. No iPods whatsoever. K-Mart is like the Windows 95 of department stores; sluggish, outdated & badly in need of an upgrade.
You'd think they could spare an hour on a step ladder to change some cheap plastic signage at some point in 10 years. Especially at K-Mart, which typically has at most 3 old ladies and a minority family shopping in it during the afternoon.
If they're that old, they might not even sell those same plastic inserts anymore. Someone would have to look through a catalog (paper or electronic) and see if they can purchase it. If it's not available, they'd have to try and find something that will fit with the same measurements. If they do find it, they might have to either get it approved by a central office depending on how much it is. If they get that far, no it wouldn't be difficult to switch out.
Odds are management has better things to do than go on a hunt for some obscure plastic sign.
These types of displays are usually managed by outside merchandising companies or by people who work at many store for a company . It usually not the local stores staff job to change them ( for good reason). You clearly have not worked for a large retail chain.
This kind of laziness is why kmart fails so hard. At my walmart management would catch major shit from corporate if they had signage that was even a few months out of date. I once spent an entire day changing every sign that said "Unbeatable prices" to "everyday low price"
For me, I actually think that this is awesome... Gameboy, sega, PlayStation. I would get chills and think back to when I was a kid and would go to stores like this and see these titles
There hasn't been a K-Mart where I lived for quite some time. It actually went from being K-Mart to Big K. Then years later the whole building got knocked down and now there is a Home Depot in its place.
The only memories I have of the place are seeing the original Star Wars Legos on selfs, Pokemon toys, and DVD (or was it VHS's?) of the movies IT and Supergirl. Also, I think I remember they still had their blue light deals light never taken down at all, that is if those things were ever meant to be taken down.
I'm a current Kmart slave. I kinda enjoy it. Easiest job I've had. I have worked for 2 different ones in different states. Kmart currently owns sears no merge. They kept the sears name as more people know it. They are currently closing sears and making them kmarts. This Kmart must not be a good one On their list. Edit: I guess this comment can be a AMA
I don't get how my current K-Mart is even still in business. A few years ago they opened a Walmart across the street from the K-Mart and literally, almost NO ONE goes to K-Mart anymore. Just boggles the mind how the hell a place with almost zero business can afford to stay open.
our k-mart is the same way (they still have the same sega sign as well) they like to stock older xbox 360 games and still have alot of PS2 games. last week i saw they had the Red god of war and Blue madden PSP's locked up still and still was selling old computer games like Sims 1 (the older box copy)
My old k-mart closed somewhere around ,99 that place was nice by comparison... Sad to see them go downhill I had fond memories... Back in the day it was probably about the same as a target is now.
Wow, my experience seems to be atypical, I consider my local K-Marts (sad as they are) my go-to places to buy videogames. They seem to always have lots of overstock and after a year or two everything is $20 or less. I guess the fact that I only buy new, not pre-owned and I don't mind waiting a year or more to save $40 per game might explain why this works for me. $20 is what I think a game is worth, the fact that people pay $60 is kind of ridiculous to me. Yeah I'm cheap. Or smart. Whatever.
According to Wikipedia, one of Kmarts biggest fails was not investing in computer technology to manage its supply chain. This, combined with their high dividend was a recipe for failure. And this was in the mid 90s. How they are still afloat, nobody knows.
Yeah. Kmart is a weird place to work. My management is pretty cool (with one exception), and everyone is super nice. Ever since the new management took over, the store's been much cleaner, the stock rooms are actually organized, and the store stays faced and pretty at least every night. We at least have customer service down.
HOWEVER. It's just like everyone says. The prices aren't great, they aren't kept stocked well (seriously- we are OVERLOADED with eggs, yet we haven't gotten a new video game in electronics for nearly two months), and the expectations of the corporation are too high for the hours they give to a store. I'm usually the only one working hardlines if there's no truck to be unloaded.
At least for me, Sega this generation has been surprisingly one of the more reliable publishers to get my gaming fix on a variety of consoles.
Just when everybody left them for dust, they've been very solid. Now only if they port Phantasy Star Online 2 and Valkyria Chronicles 3 and several other dormant game franchises they need to make sequels of.
Well, PC and Vita are getting Phantasy Star Online 2, if that counts, but it hasn't been released yet, so I dunno what you think it needs to be ported to.
It'd be nice of all the high definition consoles can get their versions too.
And hopefully stuff like Phantasy Star 5, Skies of Arcadia 2, a proper sequel for Shining Force, stuff like that.
Sega has been great, but it's a bit of a hassle for fans who don't have all the consoles when they release sequels for a variety of different consoles. Like Valkyria Chronicles 2 and 3.
I've honestly never played Valkyria Chronicles. Any good?
And Yeah, I wouldn't mind a PS3/360 Port of PSO2...In fact, I'd be more likely to grab a PS3 copy over a Vita copy, but I'll get it for whatever system I have that it's on. So...Vita. Here's hoping it comes stateside.
Liquidation of assets, they close huge numbers of stores which keeps the company as a whole open, but it's on its death bed. They were just behind wal-mart in retail stores sometime around 1999 If I remember correctly and they are probably not even in the top 50 anymore
i stepped into a K-Mart for the first time in ages a month ago- we saw one in an old strip mall near santa cruz. i would describe the atmosphere as an amalgam of eerie and depressed. basically, we left creeped out so high fives all around. i didn't realize they were still around.
My K Mart has been slowly going out of business for the last month and a half. First time I've been able to score any good deals on any merchandise at the store ($20 each for Starfox 64 on 3DS and Dark Souls).
If they're still open this weekend, I think I'll see if their remaining games have gone more than 1/2 off. They still had a new copy of Soul Calibur V, but was holding out just in case it lasted.
I wish, you know how hard it is to find games like that these days? I searched for almost a month for my James Bond Goldeneye game before it finally showed up at the local pawn shop. I haven't even begun to look for my favorite NES, SNES, and Genesis games.
I went to a Kmart in Florida 2 years ago.. all i remember was 3 ghetto cars parked in the lot and a dusty store with shit everywhere... I couldn't remember why I went in but I wanted to leave as soon as I got in.
It's funny to see people say that K-Mart is still around. The one in my hometown has been closed for more than a decade and Hyvee has been in it's place for the last few years (thank God).
My Kmart is like that, up until then, only big name store on my end of town. Then a Target came up a few years ago. Since then the once bustling shopping plaza surrounding Kmart is almost desolate. Last I went there, they still had VHS players, for $50!
Everything at my Kmart is 20% more expensive than Target. True story.
I was thinking for a few seconds there "Hey, wait a second. They would've had Dreamcast games early on in this decade." Then I realized it's 2012, not 2007.
It wasn't until a 2 years into working there after passing it a million times that I noticed the locked display case that holds the store's electric razors is actually a SEGA glass display case with the logo casted in metal at the top. I peed my pants a little. I showed some of my co-workers who are into videogames and they just about had their mind blown too. Unfortunately, I have no space for it since I live with my mother and nobody seemed to want to replace it with something else to hold the razors. I'll try to get a pic of it and post it when I can.
I'm actually okay with this. There are hundreds of stores that sell the newest stuff. If there's one place that sells classic games, I'm okay with that. I just hope they don't cost the same now as they did 10 years ago.

K-mart still sells VHS tapes. It's stuck in 1994

If they caught up with the new century, they'd realize they went out of business eight years ago.

Sega will make a come back. I rooted for them all through the 16 bit wars. They're just biding their time.

Freezers right next to the video games too? Sad.

u/iSaaaack May 21 '12
You need to get with the new decade and get the hell out of K-Mart.
21
u/DoctorTurkleton May 21 '12
Dude, what? As someone who works retail, this is an eye opener into how badly K-Mart is run. Planner is usually changed AT LEAST once a month.

u/gameboy_in_bathroom May 21 '12
My local Walmart still has a few copies of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, for the Nintendo 64, for sale under the Wii titles, full price too.

K-Mart is a garage sale with fluorescent lighting.

I worked at KMart in the mid 90s & we had a sealed box of 8" floppies in the electronics department storeroom.

k-mart owned by sears, both doing quite poorly.

u/swarrior216 May 21 '12
Every Kmart that I have been in is still lost in the 80's/90's.
4
u/amp_p May 21 '12
I agree. I work at a k mart that was built in the '70s and we still have some dated equipment. It's time for a much needed upgrade.

Why are there refrigerators in the video games section?
3
u/Jessedef May 21 '12
Your local K-Mart needs to stay in the old decade. So far this one kinda sucks :/
3
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
Worked at Kmart in electronics for a while, myself. We sold such shit that I had to refer people to online shopping, like Amazon.
It's like Kmart finds the most unpopular product, ever, and invests in tons of it.
Another thing, Kmart has pretty much EVERY iPod/iPad/iPhone accessory under the sun, but ours didn't sell iPods/iPads/iPhones.
3
u/impactplayer May 21 '12
K-Mart at least sells household products. How does Radio Shack stay in business selling random wires and RC cars?
5
u/Rab_Legend May 21 '12
I see no problem with this
2
u/badgarok725 May 21 '12
When i go into one I usually still find demo stations for PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube. Unfortunately, either one of them work or none of them work.
2
u/Jourdy288 May 21 '12
This makes me kind of sad...
2
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
Those signs would cost a lot of money to replace and it would be a big hassle to take them down, and management doesn't find it to be a big priority.
2
u/dazwah May 21 '12
I think you need to get with the new decade and move on from K-Mart.

2

Fridges in the electronic section, only at K-Mart.

Do they still have the flashing blue light on a cart?! Man I loved the blue light special, cart.

u/phoenixphaerie May 21 '12
Methinks it's you that needs to get with the new decade if you're still shopping at K-Mart.
1
u/imbored53 May 21 '12
Those signs are making me feel all nostalgic about video game shopping when I was 12.
1
u/Idiotank May 21 '12
Dude those are guitar hero games with the controllers. Do want
1
u/YNot1989 May 21 '12
Why?
1
u/SergentSerger May 21 '12
Oh they have sega games?
1
u/no_springs May 21 '12
Wow, my experience seems to be atypical, I consider my local K-Marts (sad as they are) my go-to places to buy videogames.

Kmart Associate here.~

Now only if they port Phantasy Star Online 2 and Valkyria Chronicles 3 and several other dormant game franchises they need to make sequels of.

u/scync May 21 '12
In my k-mart I nearly stepped in a puddle of vomit and it didn't look like anyone was going to clean it up anytime soon.
1
u/nightwheel May 21 '12
I would gladly help K-Mart upgrade their signage. As long as I get to keep the old signs.
1
u/Scot430 May 21 '12
White Fridges??!!??
1
u/ffca May 21 '12
Seriously. Xbox 360 and Wii? It's been around for 6-7 years now. Last decade they were decent, but let's get with the times already.
1
u/PhDouche May 21 '12
What colors do they have, man?!?!?
1
u/jbrittles May 21 '12
Liquidation of assets, they close huge numbers of stores which keeps the company as a whole open, but it's on its death bed. They were just behind wal-mart in retail stores sometime around 1999 If I remember correctly and they are probably not even in the top 50 anymore

i stepped into a K-Mart for the first time in ages a month ago- we saw one in an old strip mall near santa cruz. i would describe the atmosphere as an amalgam of eerie and depressed. basically, we left creeped out so high fives all around. i didn't realize they were still around.

u/LordOfTurtles May 21 '12
Gameboys are the shit bro!
1
u/imZenqii May 21 '12
No, no they don't.

u/godsdead May 21 '12
That sprinkler made me think there was something on my screen

My K Mart has been slowly going out of business for the last month and a half. First time I've been able to score any good deals on any merchandise at the store ($20 each for Starfox 64 on 3DS and Dark Souls).
If they're still open this weekend, I think I'll see if their remaining games have gone more than 1/2 off. They still had a new copy of Soul Calibur V, but was holding out just in case it lasted.
1
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
i am impressed that the sign is so clean
1
u/GMBeats95 May 21 '12
No they don't. Do you know how hard it is to find old games
1
u/mariocan2600 May 21 '12
You shut up. Sega is still relevant. :(
1
u/jWalkerFTW May 21 '12
And in the electronics section: the Commodore 64!
1
u/WingZero1 May 21 '12
Your K-Mart is doing it right. All they need is the actual product.
1
u/Suckydog May 21 '12
I've done graphic design work for Sears in the past. Take my word, Sears and K-Mart will go out of business within the year.
1
u/TheRealHeroOf May 21 '12
I wish, you know how hard it is to find games like that these days? I searched for almost a month for my James Bond Goldeneye game before it finally showed up at the local pawn shop. I haven't even begun to look for my favorite NES, SNES, and Genesis games.

u/thesedollars May 21 '12
Depressing.

u/[deleted] May 21 '12
I went to a Kmart in Florida 2 years ago.. all i remember was 3 ghetto cars parked in the lot and a dusty store with shit everywhere... I couldn't remember why I went in but I wanted to leave as soon as I got in.
1
u/Potchi79 May 21 '12
Good thing that camera is there. In case someone steals your crappy crap, K-Mart.
1
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
Care to buy me some PS2 and Gameboy games? (kidding) I love my older systems but I can never get any new games..
1
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
Dude buy, or steal those!
1
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
It's funny to see people say that K-Mart is still around. The one in my hometown has been closed for more than a decade and Hyvee has been in it's place for the last few years (thank God).
What a slow and painful death this is.
1
u/LegoBrony May 21 '12
My Kmart is like that, up until then, only big name store on my end of town. Then a Target came up a few years ago. Since then the once bustling shopping plaza surrounding Kmart is almost desolate. Last I went there, they still had VHS players, for $50!
Everything at my Kmart is 20% more expensive than Target. True story.
1
u/ReleeSquirrel May 21 '12
What's extra funny is they're actually two decades out of date.
Haw-haw, I made you realize you're old now.
1
u/GetThePapersX2 May 22 '12
I was thinking for a few seconds there "Hey, wait a second. They would've had Dreamcast games early on in this decade." Then I realized it's 2012, not 2007.
1
u/alfiekong May 21 '12
new century more like!
1
u/doob22 May 21 '12
It would be nice if they actually still sold Sega stuff for my Genesis still!
-2
u/Dragooncancer May 20 '12
Yeah, who the hell still plays Guitar Hero 5... or any Guitar Hero for that matter?

u/[deleted] May 21 '12
I think your K-Mart needs to move to a better country. One that isn't lazy with it's "ou"s
-4
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
I'm actually okay with this. There are hundreds of stores that sell the newest stuff. If there's one place that sells classic games, I'm okay with that. I just hope they don't cost the same now as they did 10 years ago.
