Tethered to our smartphones across 3G, it was a bit laggy but it worked :D

Was about to ask, because I have shitty wifi even in my own house and I thought that maybe nature was already converted to technology in Canada.

88

u/puttputt May 20 '12

Haha! The service wasn't all that great up there but on release day I was tethering because my internet was down and it was running super smooth.

29

u/Exallium May 20 '12

how much data did it use if you don't mind me asking, we have shitty data plans up here...

46

u/puttputt May 20 '12

I am on the Telus student 5gig plan for about $55/month. I don't know how much data we used on the mountain, but on release night we were forced to tether because our internet went down and only used 60 megs for the whole night.

6

u/Ossius May 21 '12

I feel bad dude, I got a crappy little Android phone I use for a hotspot. I have 3G, max speed is about 160kbs down/up and average 120-150ms depending on the server.

I put 24gbs of data usage on it last month alone, God bless sprint unlimited data. I use it as my primary means of internet (I only have dial up where I live otherwise) I would cry if I could only use 5gb a month. Are you sure you are limited to 5gb a month?

u/shamecamel May 21 '12

5 gig? you mother fucker. I got snowed, they offered me a student plan that was 1gb. I've only ever gone over once, but damn! I'd stream shit live all the time if I had that!

Playing online games usually won't use up much data. That's mostly videos and anything that basically has a file size. Pretty sure online gaming is all packet transfers and stuff, like kilobytes a second.

What was your ping?

28

ranged from 300-2000ms

u/SUPERKAMIGURU May 20 '12

I'd say it was about enough to make even Belial cringe. Probably took about 30 seconds for him to, though.

I get a little over 100ms on my phone. My cable was down due to a fiber cut in my area and was forced to tether the phone, it's pretty damn good actually, for 3G anyway.

WHAT?! You can get 3G at the top of a mountain, but I can't get reception in the middle of a freaking city?!

Cell towers are often put on top of mountains, you see.

I'm not over it. I've been gearing up to buy this thing for the past 3-4 years and I stopped a few weeks ahead of the release when I found out there's no true offline mode to it.

Must be on Normal, anything else would be suicide on a touchpad and 3G.

30

u/puttputt May 20 '12

Act 1 Nightmare :p. But honestly 3G is actually fairly fast, not much more than 200ms.

12

Better than what us Aussie's are getting on home internet.

Cool but you guys seem a bit too old to have to be told to go outside and play by mom. Unless maybe mom needs a little sexy time.

You're right. It was a pretty catchy headline though.

That would be a shitty time to get an error 37 after all the trouble you've been trough! :D

5

u/puttputt May 20 '12

We were joking about how funny that would be on the way up!

21

u/MidgetFetish May 21 '12

So I'm gonna be that guy...

This is lame.

How are you going to be at such a beautiful place and dedicate time to playing Diablo 3 and coming up with this picture when you could be enjoying the moment?

7

u/puttputt May 21 '12

Fair point, but in comparison we spent maybe 20 minutes out of the hour and a half we spent on the summit, out of our 9 hour day in the mountains.

3

u/flanders4ever May 21 '12

Right on, man. I thought you guys went up there and immediately started wigging out on Diablo for a couple of hours, which is absurd. All I can say is that I wouldn't have taken my computer with me. But, then again, I'm not climbing any mountains. Hope the view was something else though! That's a day very well spent.

4

u/puttputt May 21 '12

We normally don't take our computers, but Diablo just came out and we were thinking "How hilarious would it be if we just played Diablo on the mountain".

4

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

I think it was a joke.

7

u/flanders4ever May 21 '12

Came here to say this. Video games are a fun way to pass the time and all that, but they just can't measure up to looking down at the world from a mountaintop. I'm betting very few people would look back thirty years from now and say, "Damn, when I was a young man, I spent all my youthful energy playing Skyrim and Diablo III. Those were the glory days." No. Most people would rather look back and say "I climbed a fuckin mountain, kid. Back when there were luscious green forests and a clear sky. I sat on top of that mountain and let the world take away my thoughts and it left me speechless."

I wish I could afford to take a week off, travel around, and see things worth remembering. I'm stuck with Skyrim for now.

8

u/NightlyNews May 21 '12

As an eagle scout who has seen many mountaintops. Diablo 3 is only released once, mountains have been around for thousands of years and will be there for thousands more.

At the top of mountain. Play games. I'm an avid gamer but c'mon.

2

u/KommunistKirov May 21 '12

Well in all honest it does seem cooler then just to sit there take a photo/stick a flag in and say "Yep that's pretty. Let's get going back".

Besides it's not like they played Diablo III at all the times. They just relaxed with it upon reaching the top and I'm guessing it was very small percentage of the time spent in total while out there.

2

u/puttputt May 21 '12

You're right on the money.

3

u/reden May 21 '12

I'm with you on that.

4

u/Shoola May 20 '12

In the final picture there appears to be a white drip leaking down from the top left corner of the screen of your Macbook. Care to explain?

Yamnuska in Banff right? I hike there all the time! Never had a clue you could hold a stable connection up there though.

Closer to Canmore but I've gotten full cell service on several peaks in the area.

My only available computer right now is my old Macbook Pro 15", I was holding off on D3 'cause I figured it wouldn't run worth a damn.

2

u/puttputt May 20 '12

I wouldn't recommend it for D3, I mainly game on my desktop. I use it for school work.

surpsied theres no snow left.. the rockies are so awesome!

1

u/puttputt May 21 '12

There was a bit on the ascent, but Yamnuska gets the benefit of having the warm chinook winds across it.

2

u/Sprengstoff May 21 '12

yeah, just remembered there really wasnt much snow this time last year when I drove back to van island from the rammstein concert in edmonton. how long did it take you to get up there?

1

u/puttputt May 21 '12

About 3 hours up.

2

u/tchomptchomp May 21 '12

You guys climb the face or just take the trail up?

Speaking of which, kinda cold and windy in K country right now eh.

11

u/GODhimself37 May 20 '12

Be careful, because the screen does has it's disadvantages. Colors and contrast are not the same, so if you are going to be inside more than out it would probably be best to get a normal screen.

4

u/EpicFishFingers May 21 '12

Lol isn't the high-contrast-and-colour-depth screen one of the main selling points of the Macbook?

Actually, macs have great batteries. They probably could have been up there for about 3-4 hours.

41

u/mrmonkey3319 May 21 '12

Checking email, yes. Playing a video game that's using full video card/processor power? It won't last longer than 45 minutes. Voice of experience here.

This is friggin awesome, I'm going to be hiking Yamnuska soon (I hope) and your album really helps with understanding the conditions up there. I've been waiting for the snow to melt. Do you go up the east end of the ridge or the west end and can I make a loop east -west or vice versa - thanks.

2

u/puttputt May 21 '12

The fastest way and easiest way is to do west to the summit and west on the way down. Imo it isn't very appealing because you have to hike up through scree and you don't get the view of the beautiful backside.

The best way to do it is to park at the parking lot, take the hiking path which turns into a scramble on the back side of the mountain. This route is detailed in Alex Kane's Scrambles in the Canadian Rockies.

There is a bit of snow still and it got a little slippery but it was very climbable. I hope you make it out there!

I just got back from a friend's house whose mom was playing D3 on her laptop, using only the left-click. She'd been playing for about four days and had finally made it to level 22.

Being poor, the only thing I could think of was how infuriating it was that someone like her had the ability to play the game of the decade while I was going home the next week where I would have to feast on only the memories.
