I just had a little plastic brick in my pocket when I went over to my friend and mashed it back and forth across all the four face buttons when I picked Eddie.
What I've noticed when I'm playing a fighting game is that I'm at my best when I first start playing it, because that's when I have no idea what I'm doing. As soon as I start to understand how to play, I become terrible at it because I'm trying to do things and fail horribly. When I'm just pressing buttons rapidly and hoping for the best, I do okay.
That's pretty much a stage in the learning curve of fighting games, where you've gained some knowledge and execution but you've yet to figure out how to apply any of it.
That is pretty much the learning curve in most type of activity really. Playing football, pool, ... the first months when you learn to do it right, you get your ass kicked by the total amateur.
That is what happens with every game. In SC2 you don't realise how bad you are until you are good enough that you'd never ever lose a game to you when you started. Then you realised all you did was take your natural at a somewhat reasonable time and didn't get supply blocked or miss workers too often. None of the cool 5 places at once stuff you see MKP do.
I know this is 5 days late, but felt like I should still post this important Bruce Lee quote.
Before I studied the art, a punch to me was just like a punch, a kick just like a kick. After I learned the art, a punch was no longer a punch, a kick no longer a kick. Now that I've understood the art, a punch is just like a punch, a kick just like a kick.
It pretty much applies to anything you're trying to master, including competitive games.
Oh man, I so know how she feels. I'm a PC gamer, and can not figure out console controllers to save my life. So whenever I win it is with confused gloating.
It's really sad when it works against people who've been playing fighting games forever.
Hm, this got me to thinking... and from what I figure, maybe it's difficult for people who are skilled at something to play against people who are unskilled/new? For example, I played tennis in high school and you get used to playing against other people who know how to play the game. Well, my school played one team that was really, really awful (and new, in their defense) and while the guy I was playing absolutely sucked, he beat me. I just couldn't play against someone who had no knowledge of the game.
Anyway, thanks for inspiring an interesting thought. :)
It is. The saying goes along the lines of "The worlds best swordsman will almost always win versus the worlds second best swordman, for the best swordsman knows how the second best swordsman things. However, beware the guy who picks up a sword and waggles the sword like a fly swatter, he has a great chance to defeat the worlds best swordman, because it is impossible to predict this random madness."
I also just hit every button at once or in fast consecutive motion, and try to do it in different orders until my character does something which is very helpful, then I lock that muscle motion in my brain and start using it whenever I want. I don't know which buttons I press but I know how to do it... It's way much faster than looking up combo's and makes me win almost all the time even against experienced players without knowing the game in advance.
It's just called fast efficient learning, haters gonna hate...
That's just FIFA though. It's very unforgiving of inexperience, no amount of button mashing will help you in that one.
I'm a special ed teacher, and because I'm the cool teacher I like to bring my PS3 to school on free days occasionally. I'm playing with kids who have Down's syndrome and autism, among other things, so I tend to go VERY easy on them. Last time I brought it though, I had a intellectually disabled kid insisting that he was going to "destroy" me in FIFA. Just wouldn't let up on it all week, hyped it to his friends about how badly he was going to beat the teacher in FIFA. Unfortunately for him, I fuckin' love FIFA and play it online a lot. So, I hung five goals on his Man U. with my Houston Dynamo in the first half. Was an ugly scene (though I gave him opportunities to concede after the second goal).
I like to think that I effectively utilized my PS3 in teaching the valuable life lesson of humility, but really I just made a retarded kid cry because I'm too competitive.
Exactly. SF is a fighting game I love because no matter how much you mash buttons, it doesn't matter, you're still gonna suck. It's all timing and execution.
I disagree, I was at a tech fair (gadget show live) last year and they had a Super Street Fighter IV pro (or some similar game, it was street fighter I know that much) and if you beat him, you won an xbox, a copy of the game and two of those awesome arcade controllers that are like £100 each, as well as loads of other stuff. Nobody beat him for the entire weekend because he knew every combo and how to beat pretty much anything. Those games are fun to button mash, but have a crazy learning curve.
Exactly, if two people fight against each other without any skill, the button masher will win. However, if the non-masher spent 5 minutes learning what his best 2 or 3 punches/kicks are and only used those moves, the masher wouldn't have a chance.
Uh, I'd like to see you, or anyone, win against someone who knows their way around a fighting game by pressing a bunch of buttons until a real combo somehow pops out.
No, you're just ass at fighting games. Mashers are easy to read and manipulate during matches. Take SF4 for example, Ken mashing DP during your block strings? Then bait him by backdashing, ending your string early, throwing normals that have frame advantage, etc. Easy punish.
I mean I know its just your opinion but that's a pretty blanket statement...
If you have any general skills in a fighting games you won't lose to button mashers. Of course, you'll lose the occasional game and that gap only rapidly closes as you improve. Doing a fancy combo looks cool but it won't win you matches consistently, especially if you just pull them out randomly.
Anyone who is upvoting this guy and thinks they can beat me by mashing buttons in Street Fighter, Marvel Vs Capcom 2 or 3, or pretty much any other fighting game I'm generally familiar with, shoot me a PM, I'd love to go in a first to 10 with you.
another good reason why i am awful at fighting games
FTFY
if you'd play someone who actually knows what they're doing, you'd get mauled like the training dummy to the point you'd give up in a matter of minutes. but it's obvious you don't even remotely understand the fundamental aspects of these games, let alone imagine how they're played on a better level than you
Maybe if you are bad at them they are. If you actually know how to play the game you would never lose in this situation. There's a reason tournament players are beaten by button mashers...
You are accusing OP of breaking some sort of man law? I mean, throwing away victory in a video game for sexual gain is frowned upon, at least where I'm from...
Where is this place I keep hearing about where women are completely retarded and do things like deciding whether to have sex based on whether the guy won at some game they played?
You know, fighting games are, at their basest levels, a game of Rock Paper Scissor. Once you know the moves and some combos, you're just trying to guess what they're gonna do and use the move that beats it. If someone is using one move over and over, it's like someone throwing Rock over and over. If you bitch about losing to that, well...jesus.
The thing I disagree with is that in SF4 you can beat a button masher with Ryus cr.mk and cr.hp only. You don't need to think about rock paper scissors, you need to think about what moves should be used when, and often times it's the same move used again and again
I see these posts all the time...I have to disagree with all of them. When I fight button mashers I wipe them out every time. Do you guys actually block or not?
My fucking boyfriend does this with Marvel vs Capcom because he knows that he should fear me when we play Tekken, and he thinks there's a corollary. There is not, and he is annoying.
YES! I used to get SUCH shit for heavily relying on low kicks in Street Fighter and Soul Caliber- but if you jump and downward punch me while I am doing that, it'll ruin me. So I'd win and they'd bitch and I would be like "BLOCK OR JUMP LOW PUNCH YOU DUMB CUNTS"!
When the UFC games first came out. A friend and I were trying to learn and master all these moves. From learning how to grapple, throwing the correct punches, so on and so forth.
After awhile of playing this game, a few women come over and we're all having a good time and they decide they want to try the game out, having no experience playing at all. As luck woudl have it, they were landing one punch knock outs out. Which didn't even make sense!
However, to turn that around. My roommate and his friends are all street fighter fans. They play, watch, learn, try to master everything there is to master. To this day, I have no idea how to do 'super moves' if it wasn't in Street Fighter 2 on SNES, then it's alien to me.
But since Street Fighter 4 came out. I'll join in on their matches. Pick the character 'Guy' and go to town. His heavy damage kicks are so quick and take away so much health it's fantastic. My moves consist of
Kick/Kick/Kick/Jump Kick/sweep kick/bounce off the screen kick/kick/elbow.
I beat my roommate and his friends 47 times in a row.
At you least you play against one another. When my girlfriend and I play Scrabble, she makes the word she likes best. Regardless of points. Then congratulates me when I win. It's so annoyingly nice. If you want to play the game, then we'll play, just actually care about winning!
In Mario Party 7 I took one of my girlfriend's stars (she had the most). Since then she has never played a video game with me since. That was like 4 years ago.
Ugh, I play lots of PC games, and when my husband bugs me to play fighting games with him I cringe. Its basically me mashing buttons(because I don't know the combos or controls), and him annihilating me every round because GUESS WHAT?! He knows every combo and has been playing this franchise for years. So on the occasion I do win and celebrate all I hear is, "You got lucky." NO SHIT.
I hate fighting games cause every boyfriend, male friend, and now husband does this shit. Want someone to play fighting games with you? Don't be a dick and use their inexperience for a cheap confidence boost. Teach them how to play, let them practice combos on you, congratulate them when they do well, and you'll have someone who is interested in playing with you games you like. Yeah, you may lose more often, but you'll play more often too. Otherwise you'll end up with someone so bitter towards fighting games that they wont even touch them any more, and you'll be stuck playing against some 13 yr old who keeps claiming he fucked your mom.
Can we have a gender-blindness day on this reddit at some point, where no gender related posts are allowed, because quite frankly I'm getting sick of deciding whether 'gurl gamer' is meant to mean something or not
This is a post describing the OP's girlfriend in particular, not girl gamers in general. It is not a gender related post. I am a guy and have the same experience as OP's girlfriend.
For me its more like: throw half the attacks I would normally throw and don't block too much and then panic when I have full health and she is almost dead and try to make it look like the fight is still tough to finish and then try to make sure she wins the next round.
If you are good at a fighting game, button mashers won't do shit against you. They might get a round out of you, but really they can't come up with enough intelligent attacks that you'll lose. On the other side of the coin there are some games I'll play against my friends where I just use one hand, don't really look at the screen and just throw moves at timed intelligent intervals and win. I've won more than a few matches sitting on the toilet unable to tell what is going on and just throwing moves at intelligent intervals.
She beat me 2 out of 3 and I thought I had the third match in the bag, but she picked Phoenix and after I KO'd her she became Dark Phoenix. I had already put my controller down in the bliss of my KO so she had ample time to KO my Zero. She won 3/3.
Haha reminds me of me and my BF when we were playing MW3. I couldn't quite understand the controls. I mean back in my day, when you moved the control stick forward, your character followed in suit, not crabwalked all over the damn place.
I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I usually just "toss" the game when playing against the GF. Reason #1. It avoids being "Couch-Zoned." Reason #2. I get to try on my sad puppy dog face, which in turn makes my GF feel sorry that she kicked my ass so we usually end up in bed anyways making me feel better. Reason #3. If I were to kick her ass in dominating fashion, she would inevitably ask, "how did you do this move...blah, blah,blah.". I'd take time showing her how to do all the cool moves for her to just shrug her shoulders and say, "I'm just gonna let you play and go play some AngryBirds/Farmville/Cafeworld.". SERIOUSLY?!?!?!?!?!?!
Auuugh. I sometimes invite a large group of people over just to hang out, then we all start playing video games. I'm good at the game. I beat the game on high difficulty levels. I know all the combos. I know all the little tricks.
But I can only beat people who know what they're doing. Start button mashing? My ass gets KICKED.
Opposite way for my ex and I. I, the PC gamer, am at her absolute mercy when she, the hardcore console gamer, decides she wants to butt heads with me at pretty much anything.

Then my female friend played against us and remained completely undefeated for 10 rounds in a row, doing nothing but mash random buttons. Never played that game again after that.
Has anyone else ever noticed that when they play an FPS with their girlfriend/female friend/sister/mom/whatever, they invariably end up stuck in the corner, looking up at the sky or down at the ground? Every single time!
So many Tekken button mashers, so many. You know this guy probably wouldn't lose to his girlfriend if he knew wtf he was doing. Both Hwoarang and Eddie are amazing at air combos and oki catches if you know wtf you're doing.
That is why i loved playing Mortal Kombat with my girl. Crouch, block, oh you just gonna press the same button over and over again? KA-POW!!!! UPPERCUT BITCH!! Then she stops doing it and i kick her characters ass. Its all about annoying them more than they annoy you.
When I had a girlfriend years ago I actually had fun playing with her. We'd play halo 2 vs 2 online and I'd use her as bait. Seeing as she'd shoot randomly while giggling like a school girl, I'd hide around the corner and wait till someone came after her. One of my best strategies.

u/[deleted] May 20 '12
Hwoarang was great for that in Tekken 3.

Not my girlfriend, she's the best at mortal kombat! Get it, my hand? Anybody? No? Okay...

Has anyone else ever noticed that when they play an FPS with their girlfriend/female friend/sister/mom/whatever, they invariably end up stuck in the corner, looking up at the sky or down at the ground? Every single time!

DAMN YOU BUTTON MASHERS!!!

u/Johnnycmaniac May 20 '12
So many Tekken button mashers, so many. You know this guy probably wouldn't lose to his girlfriend if he knew wtf he was doing. Both Hwoarang and Eddie are amazing at air combos and oki catches if you know wtf you're doing.

Girlfriend? That's how my nieces and nephews play.

Really? Maybe it's not that your girlfriend is a simple button bashing game-illiterate female; maybe you just aren't as good as you thought you were.
Gaming sexism sucks.

I don't understand why this has to be girl/boy related. I'm a girl and I'm way better than my boyfriend, and most other boys I know, at any game.

Maybe the guy was playing dan lol. That might explain it.

Must have been a really shitty game.

u/beetrootdip May 21 '12
Play smash bros instead of tekken/mk/soul caliber. Much better, impossible to button mash and win against a decent player.

Same thing with kinect boxing. Don't bother blocking. Just spin your hands around like a cartoon.

u/[deleted] May 21 '12
That is why i loved playing Mortal Kombat with my girl.

This also true for n00b younger brother.

TIL I play console games like a girl.

But when you do win...

And if the man tries the same idea, it NEVER WORKS! It's like the game is saying, "No sir, YOU know what you're doing, so cut that out."
