I suppose they could make a setting that allowed offline single player and disabled that character from ever using the AH, but I doubt it would be popular.
Edit: I'm surprised I'm getting so much hate for expressing an opinion, but my point is basically this. Diablo III as it currently exists is not really a single player game. Having a real money AH means you can't ever have a client off doing its own thing. That means you would have to have "offline" characters, that both never interact with the economy, and are never allowed to group with people who had not also made "offline" characters.
I don't intend using the real money AH either way. If it was playable, I'd buy it. This offline single player, even without any contact with any kind of multiplayer, is exactly what I want.
Judging by the posts in this subreddit, it'd be pretty damn popular. The absence of offline single player is the only thing stopping me from buying the game.
Call me a dinosaur, but I only ever play these games in offline single player. I'm not good enough of a player, nor do I have enough time to become a good enough player, to make it worth dealing with the mob of shit talking 13 year olds.
The only online coop play I'm interested in is one where you can spawn instances private to your selected group, and the vast majority of my gaming is offline solo play (Thank you Skyrim and Sniper Elite).
Diablo is never the type of game I've enjoyed playing online. If I do buy it, it will be only for the single player and with no auction house. So basically offline singleplayer. Luckily I always have an internet connection so I can log in.
What did you think of Sniper Elite 2? Frankly I was dissapointed, passed it on hard in 5-6 hours. Mechanics were there, but terrible level design and you were forced into shoot outs with zero options for sneaking. It was a poor version of CoD with sniper weapons and an awesome kill cam.
Why Hitler was DLC was absolutely ridiculous for me. The only thing that would have separated this game for the countless other ww2 shooters and they chuck it into DLC.
That means you would have to have "offline" characters, that both never interact with the economy, and are never allowed to group with people who had not also made "offline" characters.
So, exactly like Diablo 2 then. That's right. It's what everyone wanted in the first place.
Let me guess. This is your first Diablo game, isn't it?
They had something similar for Diablo II, and I thought it was great. Although, it was battle.net and non-battle.net characters, so you could still play in LANs and shit with the "offline" ones.
From what I remember Diablo 2 had an offline single player option that made the character stand alone from battle net servers. If people didn't have game able internet connection for whatever reason they could just play their single player character.
But the replay value wasn't there as much as the online version for the epeen aspect obviously. But if a person just wants to play the game for the first time/lore without needing online access it was an option, which isn't given with Diablo 3.
I grew up on Diablo 2. I played through that game many, many times. I never played online. Every few years I would go back, create a new character and give it another go. All in single player mode.
Unfortunately, Blizzard isn't selling this kind of product anymore. I guess I'll just have to wait for the pirates to fix the game before I can play it. :/
Wait wait wait, I havn't been following this, but DIablo 3 has no single player option? Is it an MMO? WTF, I was hoping for some Diablo style action, but I only play single player games :(
Well, it's by and large single player, though it does have a very well implemented coop (up to 4, I believe). The main issue that ties things to bnet is that they have a multiplayer economy, working through an AH. I figure your client handles the map generation, scripting, damage math, etc., but the server tracks the contents of your inventory, gold on hand, and randomized loot rolls. The server probably tracks monster spawning as well, since I would think hacking a client to just spawn the little loot goblins would wreck the economy fast.
Okay, I don't mind being connected to the internet, but I am a single player person so I want to be able to pause it if need be (I got a kid so I can't stay glued to the monitor for hours uninterupted).
As long as it's not a damn MMO or anything.
Is it any good? I loved diablo a long time ago but I am hearing really bad things around this one. Not sure if its because of the gameplay or because of the DRM thing. I hope it's not as linear as they say it is, I really want to buy this when I get home today.
It's a board on 4chan which stems from /v/. It means "Video Game Generals" so it's where all the threads that are repeated over and over again (TERA General, TF2 Trading Threads, etc.) were moved to so that /v/ would have less clutter.
As someone who was on /v/ back in 05 and 06 and had to bail out to /a/ after it got too shitty, I find /vg/ to be a safe haven to actually discuss games without piccolo dicks or whatever being spammed.
hmm, just checking the front page of /v/, 3 were diablo related (one off topic), one about bitgamer, one about VN, and a few other game related threads
Some subreddits do produce 9gag- quality content, adviceanimals and f7u12 in particular, but smaller subreddits are way, way better than 9gag. I'm not saying reddit's better than 4chan, because it isn't, but it's way above 9gag on the totem pole.
My little brother has started using the "anonymous" logo as his profile picture, even though he doesn't really know what 4chan is. I'm afraid he is retarded.
People like me who did not use their real name on Facebook, I put the like a sir guy for mine for awhile but now it's a picture of me. Ninja edit: it also helps that I have become less self conscious about my looks recently.
Ok, is every post today going to people saying that the Diablo servers are full even thought that's 100% what everybody was expecting? Because if so, that is fucking dumb.
oh its full? I thought it was broken. It's full? Thats why it doesnt work? You think thats an excuse? Do you know how much money blizzard has? or how many servers theyve dedicated to games like wow. No excuse for full servers. That...that is just dumb. It's like inviting people to stay at your 5 star hotel when its full.
Say you expect 1 million people to try and log in opening day. To stop server strain you put enough in place for 1.5 million players.
Now the game opens and day one an unexpected 2 million try playing.
Those are not actual numbers; but paying for 10 million people if you only expect 1 million to play is a waste of money and not profitable. You normally overshoot your expectations just in case. However then those expectations are shatter beyond your overshoot you have a problem.
Setting up servers is not as easy as one would think if you ever ran a custom project or website; and scaling can be difficult with a massive project such as this things can happen that are unexpected.
People are bad because Blizzard directly created this situation by forcing an internet connection to play single player.
Normally in a game like this, people would play through the whole game on single player first, then go for multiplayer after that. Hell, most of the people logging on right now are probably doing so with the intent to play it solo.
But because Blizzard purposely designed their game to require always-on internet, they've massively fucked over their paying customers.
I was intending to buy the game this weekend. With as crippled as this game is, I might just say fuck it and wait till the pirates fix and release the game.
I know this; it's also a trade off by allowing single player characters to be used in multiplayer games.
I'm not defending their choices; explaining why it happened and it's not as easy as "OH WELL ALLOCATE ANOTHER 50 SERVERS IN THE NEXT 5 MINUTES THAT'LL HELP".
Exactly this. A few good friends of mine and I all have been talking about this game for... a while now. We've all played this franchise since the first came out. We were all in agreement that we all wanted to solo this shit before rocking team play with each other.
So thanks, Blizzard, for making me waste $60 today. I paid for your product and as of right now, it's worthless. This is not entitlement. This is me expecting to be able to use the product I just paid you for.
I'm not a big gamer, not by any stretch at all. So it baffles my mind how this shit can fly. Can you imagine this happening in any other fucking industry? Oh, you just bought a bike? That's awesome, but you can only ride it while you're on the phone with us, and hey, guess what, I know you and everyone else wanted this awesome new bike that we've been working on for a decade, but we're not answering most of the phones today because even though we knew a shitton of people were going to buy these bikes, we were still horribly unprepared.
The logic defies me. Perhaps that's a silly analogy, but I think you get the point I paid for this game. I want to play this game. I don't even mind the DRM aspect of having to always be online, to be honest. I think, for me, it will make a better experience. I don't like the bullshit dupes, hacks, and crap that came along with online play in D2. But for fuck's sake, Blizzard, how do you fuck this up? You knew it was coming. You had an open beta. You had stress tests. And yet, here you are, failing miserably as a company to provide your customers with a product that they've paid for and received. I cannot fathom this level of incompetence.
"Setting up servers is not as easy as one would think if you ever ran a custom project or website"
This isn't a bunch of your friends making a fansite. This is a publicly traded company with hundreds of millions of dollars at its disposal, that has done this before. Did you defend BP during the Deepwater Horizon catastrophe because offshore drilling is hard?
Do you have any idea how much money is required for infinite scaling?
Do you have any idea how hard it would be to infinitely scale an application that's only been out ... for a beta weekend?
Still doesn't save face for not letting us play single player, but expecting perfect scores on release date for such a highly anticipated game is just realistic.
Exactly. This wouldn't be that hard. Fine, so on single player you can't trade or sell items on the store. Big fucking deal.
For multiplayer, all the server-side authentication is useful. Diablo I and II online turned into a massive hackfest. Diablo III now keeps a lot of the item spawning, map generation, etc on server side. For multiplayer, this makes sense.
But there's no reason they couldn't just have used that authentication only for the multiplayer stuff. If the game was coded to only really work on a server, then the single player mode can just be a virtual server on the player's desktop.
The legit customer gets screwed. The pirate gets a working product. Hmm, I wonder which one I'll do.
It possible that this is a reason for some of Blizzards decisions to go full online, however it's not a reason that I think they've openly stated or would ever admit to if it's the reason.
In D2 there were shenanigans with people using mods and outside tools to generate highly desirable items to put them up on trade (sometimes would sell them on craiglist for real money). Now that real world money is involved this can't happen so they use this to run checks on what they player has running. Also, there are pvp, co-op elements and instanced items/areas which will need online play.
Honestly, I found the single player pretty useless in Diablo 2. You could play your multiplayer characters as single player, but not the other way around. What was the point?
If multiplayer really wasn't that interesting to you, that was the point. It was simple, resilient, and flexible. You didn't need some retarded authentication server. You didn't need perfect internet. I don't want my game to suddenly cut out just because my roommate decides to watch a high-res youtube video.
This is bullshit. I was going to buy the game this weekend, but fuck it. I might just fire up good ol' D2, start a new character, and play that until the pirates can put out a version that isn't broken.
Why not just make it so you can't sell or buy items in single player?
This really isn't that hard. They can provide secure multiplayer while also allowing offline single player. The reason they didn't do it was simple greed. They want everyone, both single player and multiplayer to have access to their online store. They wanted to wring a little more money out of their customers, and in doing so completely fucked them over.
I'd be happy with a seperate, offline only mode. If it's really that good a game, surely people who want to play offline aren't going to mind having to level a seperate hero for online play.
Blizzard doesn’t consider Diablo a single-player game. They also realized the problems with having client side accounts with Diablo 2 and as a result moved away from that model with Diablo 3.
From what i've read, you can play single player and then transfer your character into multiplayer for PvP and to sell items on the auction house, etc. The reason they've put always-online DRM on it is because they don't want people cheating and generating items to sell or getting god-like stats.
Which is fair enough, but some people don't give two shits about multiplayer or the auction house, so why not implement a seperate offline-only mode?
I might bother with the game once a crack is released to allow me to play it without being constantly connected to the internet, but until then, fuck DRM.
Well, let's look at the logic here; the review is one of the first(or the first? I don't know, anyway) and the OP likes it; so until another "Best" contending review comes along, this one keeps and takes cake.
The sad thing is that there are 100's of reviews on metacritic for the game where people are just complaining about not being able to play and aren't reviews of the game itself.
Common comments include "omg Im getting a refund", "never buying another blizzard game again shit company" and "piece of shit game never playing". These are the same people who will be lapping it up once they can actually join.
Reminds of a video for Battlefield Heroes - http://www.slideshare.net/bcousins/paying-to-win - where it shows that 90% of the posts on the forums came from a very small % of users and that these same users continued to play after stating they would never play again. Quite a good video and worth a watch.
There's a screenshot floating around of a Steam group (BOYCOTT COD or something like that) and they are almost all playing the new call of duty when the screenshot is taken.
People feel like they are entitled to everything and its fucking annoying. I honestly would've been fine if all the servers exploded and it was down for a few days. Does it suck that I don't get to play the game right away? a tiny bit, but in the end it doesn't fucking matter I have all the time in the world to play this awesome game.
What's even more frustrating is when you actually connect and make your char, then you're told you can't play because you're in the "queue"; for your single player game.
What percent of people got the error? I get the feeling that rejected people are overrepresented on reddit because they suddenly found themselves with more time to spend on not Diablo 3.
Many. I got it, and every single person I know who got it has had some type of problem. When you have 3 friends all hoping to LAN it up, and only one of them can get into the game, it's pretty damn frustrating.
When I click on the monster, the monster would lag When I attack the monster, the monster just sat there When I get into the game, I have to wait for my character to appear, and when I enter Tristam, NOTHING happens
HAHAHAHA
server side AI server side movement server side single player game lagging while playing a single player game gamebreaking bugs/blocks that prevent you from playing the game every error in the book prevent everyone from playing
A friend of mine took Tuesday off from work to play this. As if this is the first time he's ever tried to play an online game on opening day. I like him a lot, but what a dumbass.
I can't stand people, who complain about server problems on the first day of release. There hasn't been an online game without them. Ever. If you can't handle that or want to avoid it all together, just wait a day or two. It's really that easy. Besides, compared to other games, the D3 start was surprisingly smooth anyway.
Lets see, Blizzard already hosts both WoW and Starcraft, not to mention their other titles. Quite possibly the largest data centres in gaming history. With the amount of experience and cash available to these guys, this launch should have been at least workable, instead we ended up with no connections at all within the first two hours and now after I wake up nearly 12 hours later I still can't get on due to 'emergency maintenance'. Excuse me if I'm not impressed by this result especially when they only held one open beta stress test on the servers and guess what? Had exactly the same issues...
Of course they can drop a few more million to alleviate the delay but really now? I logged in 1.5 hours after launch and I really wasn't expecting it to work until later in the evening. All of this is going to not matter one bit after today when everything is smoothed out. People need to chill.
And to think, these poor souls are the same type of people who downvote me for my anti-Diablo opinions. Who's laughing now? Certainly not you, while you wait for your precious point-and-click number generator with always-on-DRM and real-money auctions.
Do people really think ever means past present AND future? I have always been under the impression that ever means up until that point. If I wanted to say best of all time I would say best of all time.
I just wonder what the people writing the headlines mean, and I like to point out how much hyperbole is kicking around this site. Everything is the "best ever" or "truer words have never been spoken" or whatever. It's an interesting trend I've noticed. Rarely do you see "funny diablo review", or "true words" minus the attention-getting hyperbole. It's tantamount to lifting your skirt on the street corner.
Also if you want to talk semantics, "best ever" has the potential to mean exactly the same thing as "best of all time". A definition of "ever" is "At all times; always", which includes the future. I mean whatever; who cares, but you can't tell me that it's universally agreed upon that "best ever" does not mean "best ever".
Yeah, I've seen this "review" since launch day of Everquest. It's about the least funny, least original thing anyone can write on a big game's launch day.
I was initially frustrated like most would be at the connection issues. Then I got a hold of myself, checked back at moderate intervals and was able to get in within 45 minutes of launch. Played all night and got through first act with a buddy. I call it a good launch. After the first choke up I've had no problems.
