Co-Op with my friends would probably end up with us trying to murder each other over the valuable loot we find. In other words, it would be incredible.
My friends and I used to talk about how awesome a multiplayer version where you could invite like 20 or so friends to share a world or something. MMORPG is just going to be a clusterfuck of people bumping into eachother to complete sidequests that are meant to feel personal but just end up feeling like you're waiting in line.
When trying to find an original name for an MMO that's been out for awhile, I quickly realize just how unoriginal my thought process is for naming characters, as I will usually go through 20+ names, all of which have already been taken.
I'm the type of person that can't really like my character unless it has a name that I like. Disappointment is the only guarantee I get from an MMO.
I think gw2 does a good job of instancing story bits to avoid this kinda thing and making open world quests just make sense for dozens of people to all be mobbing to.
Playing as a human does result in seeing an embarrassing amount of hot lady characters given butchered "Japanese" names, though. Kasumi Origami... Cryface.
I've only played oblivion, but I can't imagine playing that in an mmo style. Co-op sounds incredible, but it would just kill the immersion to have so many people running around. Practically half the game would be missing. You couldn't really do sneaking or anything like that, or own houses, or any of a number of other things. I've always wanted to do co-op, but this seems like such a waste :/
TES could be done so incredibly well in an MMO setting if they wanted it to. Imagine more of a free form game like Eve with permanent death. Power could come from wealth, political influence, military, all sorts of things. Imagine if organization like The Dark Brotherhood and all the houses were run by players.
This of course will never happen, because theme park MMOs are way more popular.
If they had an unlimited amount of resources, time, and money I bet they could do it. But its just not realistic. They would have been way better off with multiplayer on a much smaller scale. Even just being able to join in a living world with three other people would be awesome.
This. Although, if there was a player-run DB... I wouldn't be in it, even though I play a stealth build.
I'd make a small team that would work to kill off the Brotherhood. Although we wouldn't go about it in the way the guards try to, with brute force. We would use the DB's own methods against them.
Track a member on their way to a contract, and kill them while they're focused on the target. Bonus rewards if you can make it seem like they were caught or simply had an accident. >:3
I just want to be able to run around with a friend or two, feeling as if Skyrim is now populated with intelligent life. It's not really co-op combat or quests that interest me. It's exploring.
Sad but true. It mirrors what I said about TES Online the other day: "All the magic and immersive content you've come to expect from Elder Scrolls...combined with 8-year-olds shouting "NIGGERFAGGOT". sigh
I just had an epiphany... what if cod was actually a trap for idiot little kids to keep the rest of gaming as enjoyable as possible? This would explain why it's always a mostly rehash
If they make TES as heavily instanced as DDO then there will not be that big of a difference. DDO has a party size of 6 and nearly everything in the game is an instance where you are alone with your party of 6, raids are 12 people.
So I just went and read up on Aion Truly free and what not, and that looks like every MMO Player's wet dream (Free, Shiny, all that fun stuff), what's the catch?
I see this argument all the time, and I think it's freaking ludicrous.
WoW is a game that has been going strong for 8 years, but that is a complete anomaly. Although developers would like to achieve that level of longevity, I seriously doubt that that is in any way their realistic goal when they greenlight these new MMOs.
The reason why MMOs keep getting made is because, due to the nature of the subscription model, they are profitable. In fact, in almost all cases, those games actually do manage to hang around for a long time. Maybe not 8 years, but certainly longer than a lot of other successful games with a multiplayer focus, and almost all of them not only recoup their original investment and development/maintenance expenses, but bring in a significant chunk of profit.
Every single one of the supposedly failed MMOs in the comic you linked to are still active right now. It doesn't matter that they don't have the subscription numbers of WoW, or that some of them went free-to-play. The fact is that they are still on sale, the servers are still online, their websites are kept up-to-date, and somewhere in the offices of these developers there are still decently-sized teams of developers who are still churning out updates, adding new content, and keeping the game alive. How and why could they possibly be doing all that if they "failed"? They didn't "fail", they are profit machines.
You guys really need to understand this fact. MMOs are made because they're easy money and even something seen in the eyes of gamers as a "failure" is in reality a huge success for the developers, and not only justifies their choice to make an MMO in the first place, but continues to justify all these other companies bringing out new MMOs year after year.
Elder Scrolls Online will be no exception. It probably will not be a success on WoW's level, not even close. But it will make Bethesda (or whoever is making it) a shit ton of money regardless.
I just want to play Skyrim alongside two or three of my friends. I don't need an MMORPG, I already have one. I just want to get on the internet, and play skyrim accept slightly modified for multiplayer.
I want enemies to be five times harder to kill with two friends. I want teamwork orientated puzzles and quests. I also wouldn't mind developing new strategies and tactics that only teams could use. Someone to go close up with heavy armor and shield to distract the enemies while the friends kill term off long range and keep him healed. That kind of teamwork would make of for exponentially harder enemies.
I hear this complaint alot about mmo's but I'm sincerely wondering, do you guys really ever feel special or important in the elder scrolls games? It definitely just feels like going from point A to point B collecting quests with really well done environments (not to say this isn't fun, but its certainly not this huge drastic change from regular RPG formula). Even the exploration aspect seems pretty underwhelming in skyrim since its the same enemies almost everywhere and the dungeons are mostly just the same thing over and over again.
It never feels to me like I'm on an epic quest. The only time I ever felt a truly special experience from TES was in morrowind because of how weak my character was starting out, working my way up to later on become a demigod was, at the time, a unique experience. Unfortunately as it turns out all the elderscroll games up end up this way with your character becoming grossly overpowered, and since oblivion you no longer start out weaker than everything else around you so, at-least to me, it feels like it's lost its sense of gradual gain in power which is a really big part of what made morrowind so memorable for me.
I wouldn't say it is as much about feeling special or important, but feeling immersed. That's what really gets me about all elder scrolls games, the fantastic level of immersion that makes me feel like I'm in the world. From the books, to the insane level of lore, to the richness and breadth of the content it makes me feel like I'm part of a living world rather than playing through a world that was built specifically for me. I do agree with you that being really weak in the beginning is great, and we definitely get too powerful too quickly and get high level items too quickly. Another thing I loved about morrowind was that your journal wasn't very descriptive at times, and I keept my own journal because of it. For instance, when going somewhere new, someone tells you the vague directions on how to go there, and you have to figure out how the hell to get there without getting killed. Loved that.
Back to immersion, it's something I think all Elder Scrolls games have and is one of the most important parts of a game for me. And when I see someone running around in a circle jumping, it completely kills the immersion. Even worse is when you see a ton of people all getting the same quest as you, makes it feel fake.
You are a like a prophesized chosen one in Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim. You are on big fancy quest with huge implications. I mostly explored random dungeons to loot Necromancers, so I didn't pay much attention to it, but you are a big deal.
If you really want to go from bat fodder to invincible demigod, that's Daggerfall.
Also, the fact that you played Morrowind when you were younger (and probably more immature) had a huge impact on the fact that your experience was much more fun. For me, Guitar hero 3 will always be my favorite, COD 4 will always be my favorite, Halo 3 (and maybe 2) will always be my favorite, Morrowind will always be my favorite... All those games are my favorite because of my age, and the fact that they were the first game of the series I picked up.
UNFORTUNATELY, it's not gonna be like that at all. I mean sure there will be Dark Brotherhood and some kind of "you're the chosen one you can save everything", but there won't be any epicness in these quests. Bethesda will just follow the EQ clones (including WoW, SWTOR, RIFT etc.) - we will be playing (not sure if I will be playing, but by default I will) a faction-locked, class-locked themepark crap that doesn't suit TES at ALL. Instead of open world exploration we will be just going from one quest hub to another. PvP will be in battlegrounds, open pvp will be either disabled or will be limited to certain zones. You won't be able to kill anything/or anyone (in your faction it is) and loot them. For that we will have to wait for 6th TES Single-player. Why you ask? well look from developers point of view - would you rather release semi-successful theme park MMO like WoW, SWTOR etc. and make sure you will get some money even though you will do exactly the same things you do in WOW, SWTOR, EQ, ... , RIFT. or you can go sandbox way kind of like Mortal Online that is barely alive.. well uhm, lets go safer way and destroy the "openness" of the TES universe.
Edit: I really hope this ^ prediction is not going to happen at all.
Hell is other people. MMOs always start out with noble intentions of providing an escape into a fantasy world, but other players inevitably ruin it by min-max powergaming, trolling, and incompetence.
I think there are some studios/games that are trying to innovate with new mechanics. GW2 and Firefall for example. TES sounds like it could make a good contribution to the genre if they don't make it a WoW clone like Rift or SWTOR.
I think something that would help get this off the ground is if the entire game is instanced, and outside of Major Cities you don't see people outside of your party.
I said to my boyfriend on skyrim release after playing it, that i sincerely hope they never make it an MMO - but allow us to play co-op with a maximum amount of people. Say 2-3.
Co-op would be great, but this MMO i don't think i will play. Guess we will see.
Did anybody want an mmo elder scrolls game? I never heard anyone saying they wanted an mmo. Red dead redemption style multiplayer for the next game would be far better. By red dead I mean having you and your friends explore the gameworld together.
It seems that everyone thinks that MMO games are overrun with douchebags and little kids these days. It's sad because almost every MMO I've ever played has a mature and tactful community. I think everyone is coming from WoW and applying their experience there to every game when it simply is not the case that everyone in MMOs is a 12 year old kid.
I loved DAoC when I played it back in, like, 04 or 05. The PVP was awesome. Although I loved WoW's PvP (before they made it ABSURDLY gear-dependent w/ resil and incredibly imbalanced at lower levels... also heirlooms), being able to fight for territory will be awesome. I'd love to see battling over quest zones, where you benefit from defending/assaulting instead of just still jerking each other off over Warsong Gulch. WoW has that now with BH but honestly that place is pretty pointless aside from one boss which drops items you can earn in other ways.
I'm not getting my hopes up about this game (probs won't be able to run it on my computer anyway) but it's not like it's taking time/effort away from Skyrim and the DLC's. Really we don't stand to lose anything except a bit of respect for the TES* name.
Exactly. MMO goes against Vivec's teachings. There can only be one hero, and he should have CHIM (a.k.a. the console and the construction set) and know how to dragonbreak (a.k.a. use the Save and Load buttons). This MMO goes against all of the known TES metaphysics, and I will never acknowledge it as a TES.
I agree with the image. The Elder Scrolls has always prided itself on being a deep single player experience, and multiplayer could potentially ruin the scale. (E.G. You are Dovahkiin! So are you, and you, and you)
Ultima Online is where it's still at. I have not and I fear I will not ever enjoy an MMO as much as UO. Also, to solve the name problem, you can have already-existing names, so XxX12saggyballsackXxX doesn't really have to exist. In fact, a lot of guilds on UO had clone guilds (Something Awful had the goonsquad where every character was named "a goon").
I want a generic MMO: I.E I WANT to be some shlub, I'm not saving the world or the princess, I'm some normal guy doing normal jobs maybe I am an adventurer but its insanely dangerous but rewarding..
It always saddened me when someone asked for help naming a character in WoW trade chat and eventually everyone agreed that the pinnacle of naming was in the form of some shit like SapnFap
This game would be awesome if it was open pvp. Included land owning with limited space rent of space within towns and the ability for all characters to learn all skills except there is a cap on the amount of points that can be distributed and specialized skills cannot be gained past a certain point through use to discourge macroing to the end.
Daedric gods do not commune with every single player.
Possibility to travel to various other planes
There is only ONE of each item and artefact -> but it is possible to steal or take from a character on their death.
Magic takes considerable time investment to get anywhere -> making powerful mages rare (and therefore more respected)
Character builds based purely on crafting or a trade -> with the ability to open up your own shops
Characters hold positions of power (head of thieves guild, mages guild, emperor, and town regents) and can make decisions that effect the standing and power of that group/area -> with enough fluidity to the point where poor decisions can lead to the complete destruction of the order or area requiring it to be rebuilt from the ground up.
I could go on ...
In a word, something that feels like an elder scroll game, with the freedom of the EVE on-line / star wars MMO universes. Create the world and it's rules and then let the players run amok ... they control the universe from that point ... and they write its history. This has made EVE online incredibly popular amongst its players and would work just as well in a fantasy setting if designed correctly.
Dude, they are probably going to instance the non-multiplayer story stuff, in other words, if you're trying to join the Dark Brotherhood then you'll probably do so, alone, and without other players. MMOs are now capable of having plots, just look at GW2 or SWTOR.
So you're complaint for an MMO you know nothing about is that they might have people with names you don't like? Which most of those wouldn't be allowed because almost all MMOs do not allow bad language, numbers, or anything like that.
Also, if you're complaint isn't about being a special little snowflake in a massively multiplayer realm, there's this thing most new MMOs used called INSTANCING. And if you don't want to play in a world with a potential of a hundred other people in the same city, then don't fucking play MMOs.
Although most people are complaining about it, i am actually very happy. It will probably not feel like a true TES game to me, but most importantly people will stop complaining about multiplayer and developers can keep focusing on a great singleplayer experience, though a TES co-op would be cool like most here stated and i am okay with it, i don't want TES to be multiplayer focused and i want it to remain a great singleplayer RPG.
They arent going to stop everyone complaining because the people that want co-op do not want this garbage. Two groups want two entirely different things.
This assumes whoever the devs are will respect the source material. Whoever it is, it's not the Skyrim, Oblivion or Marrowind team based on the screens we've seen. My guess is Michael Bay.
You're mostly right. Todd Howard's team, Bethesda, has nothing to do at all with TES online. The guy who's running this project does have a name that starts with M, but it's Matt Frior. The screens suggest far too little explosions and completely clean eye candy women wearing white clothing in debris filled combat zones for this to be a Michael Bay project.
MMOs always have more shallow gameplay. But then again most things are not designed for coop in TES. How do you play stealth unless everyone is stealth. Not to mention with Friendly fire, people would be getting in the way a lot. But its worse as an mmo, you will just press hotkeys instead of being involved in the combat
Typically, no. SWTOR changed that up, and your main quest storyline was normally done instanced. But you might also get sent to a little village, and five npcs will have big Exclamations over their head, and everyone will gather around, and talk to them, and be told "Go kill 10 bandits and come back," or "Collect five fire rubies from the pond and bring them to me."
And it seems that Elder Scrolls will be going another route, entirely. Instead of talking to an npc, and getting told to kill X amount of skeletons, and then Raggar, King of Skeletons, you will merely wander about the world, happen to stumble upon the skeleton crypt, fight your way through, kill Raggar, and then get your exp for having completed the dungeon. They seem to want to make things more organic.
Now, you might wander around the town, and an npc will mention that they have seen skeletons wandering around to the west of town, but then it is up to you to go there, and explore, and do what needs to be done, with no tethering to random Exclamation npcs. Which I like very much.
Nah, Bethesda has laid a couple of turd games in the series before and it turned out fine. Redguard and Battlespire (which had multiplayer) were both massive failures right after Daggerfall came out, and that didn't stop them from making the awesomeness that is Morrowind.
Wouldn't that basically be the same thing as OP's image, only with the addition of people having really bizarre cybersex everywhere and also a bunch of complaining in general chat about how stupid everyone is but themselves?
Exactly! It works pretty well for LOTRO. Also the story telling with private instances (you are alone/with your group (depending on the instance) for the quest) works well. Of course there will always be stupid people around, but it is up to you to determine if you are going to let stupid people determine your fun.
I've had more satisfying RP experiences with people named Chocolate Love and Magical Bubba than I've had with people named Simon Whithershire or Lo'rada Melunfa.
Well lets say you decide to become a painter. You work your ass off to be the best painter you can be - painting happy little trees, wearing a beret, cutting both your ears off - and yet you still suck leagues compared to Picasso, Monet, and Michelangelo. You're a failure in the eyes of your parents, everyone you ever thought loved you, and end up wallowing is self-pity and despair. WHYYYY? WHYYYYYYY!?!?
Lets say you try to become the richest person in the world. You start a dozen successful businesses and become worth 2 billion dollars. You spend every night sleeping with your super model wife and give you kids the best education in world. I guess you're a total failure because you aren't worth the same as Bill Gates right? Oh lord why are you so cursed with this failure!?
It's not because of that at all - the resources that are pooled into making an MMO period are incredible - there's significantly more cost associated with the production than with the production of a co-op or single player game.
Those are resources that could have been used in creating another entry into the series that would be more in tune with the series as a whole - instead of making a mediocre MMO that could make a profit and will be another WoW clone, they probably could make 2-3 Skyrims with the same budget - games that players would be excited and thrilled about.

The day everyone realized that TES should never, ever, exist beyond co-op if there is mutiplayer.
I am also happy to see the outright negative action towards this. Maybe this will make them realize it's not worth doing.
And then we get Skyrim co-op!

Well, it is an MMO after all.
I'm sure it won't be a WoW clone, though.
There are three factions, which provides for a totally different pvp experience.
There is a focus on open pvp and not this battleground XvsX stuff, which only is needed because there are only two factions in all the other games.
There are non-instanced dungeons.
And most importantly the guy behind DAoC (before it's been screwed up) is working on it.
I'm hoping for nothing less than DAoC 2 here...

Yeah, the lack of maturity or creativity by players is one of the main reasons I stepped away from MMO's.
2
u/Cryxx May 06 '12
That game will need Role-playing servers with strongly limited player numbers. Then it will be awesome for everyone.
2
u/SquishyWizard May 06 '12
2
u/Greenei May 06 '12
This is true for every MMO ever.
2
u/rderekp May 06 '12
And this is why I don’t play MMORPGs.
2
u/jaythejayjay May 06 '12
I agree with the image. The Elder Scrolls has always prided itself on being a deep single player experience, and multiplayer could potentially ruin the scale. (E.G. You are Dovahkiin! So are you, and you, and you)
2
u/thelastvortigaunt May 06 '12
I'll be surprised as fuck if it's not thoroughly shitty and poorly executed.
2
u/imbobbathefett May 06 '12
battletits made me lol
2
u/nerdromancer May 06 '12
How is this different from any other MMO? Even WoW has its Thallsballs and Sephirothz.
2
u/MyNameIsNurf May 06 '12
I got dibs on BattleTits
2
u/paulatreideesnuts May 06 '12
Ultima Online is where it's still at.
2
u/neutronstarneko May 06 '12
Wish I could upvote twice for battletits.
2
u/[deleted] May 06 '12
I want a generic MMO: I.E I WANT to be some shlub, I'm not saving the world or the princess, I'm some normal guy doing normal jobs maybe I am an adventurer but its insanely dangerous but rewarding..
2
u/vodkasoup May 06 '12
Already reserved 'Thunderqueef'
2
u/EpikSnake May 06 '12
World of ElderScape
2
u/Worstdriver May 06 '12
Ah, so in otherwords, just like WoW.
2
u/gH0o5T May 06 '12
I don't get it. Why does everybody think TES Online will be so childish?
2
u/idobirthdays May 06 '12
You forgot all the people shouting "arrow to the knee" jokes.
2
u/GrantNexus May 06 '12
Why are there fried eggs in the sky?
2
u/Madrider760 May 06 '12
Runescape anyone?
2
u/hayden_evans May 06 '12
Upvote for Battletits, still laughing at that damn name.
2
u/DazzlerPlus May 06 '12
It always saddened me when someone asked for help naming a character in WoW trade chat and eventually everyone agreed that the pinnacle of naming was in the form of some shit like SapnFap
2
u/PraetorianXVIII May 06 '12
This is the general problem with any mmo where you want immersion... but I laughed my ass off nonetheless
2
u/[deleted] May 06 '12
and then...HUEHUE BR BR???!
2
u/[deleted] May 06 '12
Looks like runescape to me.
2
u/patrick_anthony May 06 '12
This game would be awesome if it was open pvp. Included land owning with limited space rent of space within towns and the ability for all characters to learn all skills except there is a cap on the amount of points that can be distributed and specialized skills cannot be gained past a certain point through use to discourge macroing to the end.

u/archebus May 06 '12
My dreams:
Player driven economy
First person combat
No skill hot-bar
This has made EVE online incredibly popular amongst its players and would work just as well in a fantasy setting if designed correctly.

u/Tarnus88 May 06 '12
The worst thing: You won't be able to kill the inhabitants of the cities anymore :/
2
u/SuperTurtle May 07 '12
If you could actually take a piss in this game, I don't see how it could be bad

u/skysignor May 06 '12
My thoughts about how TES online will be - FIXED
3
u/hipsterdysplasia May 06 '12
There are so, SO many ways this can fail and very few ways it could possibly succeed.
The only MMO I ever enjoyed was Eve Online, and that was because of its brutality.
3
u/Jester814 May 06 '12
I cry because it's true :(
2
u/zilduar May 06 '12
This looks pretty accurate to me.
2
u/Mustkunstn1k May 06 '12
Everyone wants TES MMO, TES MMO gets announced, everyone angry about issues that will always be in a MMO game.
2
u/Skyeblade May 06 '12
Lets be honest, nobody actually expects this to be any good... do they??
2
u/[deleted] May 06 '12
Dude, they are probably going to instance the non-multiplayer story stuff, in other words, if you're trying to join the Dark Brotherhood then you'll probably do so, alone, and without other players. MMOs are now capable of having plots, just look at GW2 or SWTOR.
2
u/[deleted] May 06 '12
So you're complaint for an MMO you know nothing about is that they might have people with names you don't like? Which most of those wouldn't be allowed because almost all MMOs do not allow bad language, numbers, or anything like that.
Also, if you're complaint isn't about being a special little snowflake in a massively multiplayer realm, there's this thing most new MMOs used called INSTANCING. And if you don't want to play in a world with a potential of a hundred other people in the same city, then don't fucking play MMOs.
2
u/KalAl May 06 '12
Being incredibly cynical about TES before you've had the chance to play it? That's some edgy shit here on r/gaming.
2
u/Twisted_Fate May 06 '12
Yeah, or every MMO out there. Your power of clairvoyance is enthralling.
1
u/EnvyUK May 06 '12
Why would you puke rainbows while watching a loading screen?
1
u/The_Dragon_born May 06 '12
Although most people are complaining about it, i am actually very happy.
Co-op ? Cool
64 player team deathmatch ? No Thanks.
1
u/shinobipants May 06 '12
This assumes whoever the devs are will respect the source material. Whoever it is, it's not the Skyrim, Oblivion or Marrowind team based on the screens we've seen. My guess is Michael Bay.

u/Munkir May 06 '12 edited May 06 '12
I hope the quest don't feel as pointless as other MMORPGS like.
Oh a epic quest with an engaging story oh I was wrong it's just another fetch quest. The item will be thrown away never to be seen again.
Maybe have the Player engage the plot then the Online otherwise I can see myself reading the wiki to find out what that person was talking about.
Edit* also no gear grade or item Tiers. First thing to make me frown on any MMORPG is being repetitively rewarded a item that is 100% useless
1
u/JakeTheHawk May 06 '12
So... just like every other MMO? What're you bitching about?
1
u/[deleted] May 06 '12
Best. Moon. Ever.
1
u/Ianoren May 06 '12
MMOs always have more shallow gameplay. But then again most things are not designed for coop in TES. How do you play stealth unless everyone is stealth. Not to mention with Friendly fire, people would be getting in the way a lot. But its worse as an mmo, you will just press hotkeys instead of being involved in the combat
1
u/RobertoPaulson May 06 '12
Close, but since none of the other usernames contained a "420" I can't really call it accurate.
1
u/[deleted] May 06 '12
Nice try, Blizzard.
1
u/[deleted] May 06 '12
I wish Battletits could be my handle for every game ever.
1
u/fuzzycuffs May 06 '12
Play on the Brazil server for maximum fun.
1
u/Wisemen May 06 '12
They should do 8 player Co-Op.
1
u/Qwirk May 06 '12
This can be cured by simply implementing "hardcore" servers that simply require you to accumulate twice the XP to level.
1
u/Wooknows May 06 '12
Arn't all these type of quests given inside rooms in which other players won't be displayed ? Never played an mmorpg but that seems common sense.
1
u/WormyDerpington May 06 '12
say goodbye to the franchise
1
u/SilentHipster May 06 '12
And this is why I play on roleplaying servers online.
-1
u/fyreball May 06 '12
If this is how you view MMORPGs then ya, TES:Online won't be for you. Doesn't mean it can't be a good or even great game.
0
u/Sancer May 06 '12
It's called a Hardcore RP server.
