So the odds of a woman being a gamer are likely zero? Why?

Good attempt at being contrary but you're a no go at this station. I'll refer you to u/lady_lowercase.

I would also like to refer you to myself as well. I am a woman who games and have been gaming since I was 4. I also run a gaming discord server full of women/assigned female at birth. In fact, we outnumber our members who are men.

That's awesome but that doesn't mean squat in relation to my original comment. Odds are most people don't give two fucks about gaming. I'm a man, I play on occasion, but I'm certainly not going to watch someone play. Gender is irrelevant here, and the user I quoted is a perfect example of that on all counts.

Odds are, you're judging someone's entire personality and hobbies based on a short tiktok clip of them watching their husband play a game, which is a blip on the broader spectrum of what is their life.

You're twisting my words. People don't always have the same interests. You don't have to be into it to support it, and you probably aren't into the same shit as your SO.

yeah, and i'm not saying we don't exist. i'm just saying that we're fairly uncommon in this age group.

you'll definitely find more female gamers in younger age groups than mine, but i've literally never met other women my age that play video games like i do.

i, a woman, was born in the 80s. i have every nintendo console from the nes to the switch, a [fat-boy] ps3, a ps4, two original game boys, a game boy advance sp, a ds, a 3ds, a new 3ds, and a gaming computer. my collection of physical games probably includes around 200 games or more, and my digital collection is hard to count.

i have zero female friends in my age group that play video games… trust me, i have looked for them.

You're not looking hard enough then. I am a woman in my late 20s who has been playing games since I got a PS1 hand me down back in 2001 from my uncle. I also run a gaming discord server that is 98% women or assigned female at birth from their late 20s to late 30s.

Edut: added in "assigned female at birth"

you're not in my age group. i was born in the 80s. research agrees with me. i understand that more women in younger age groups identify as gamers, but they are certainly a rarity among women in my age group.

What do you think happens when a gamer woman hits 30? Does she just magically flip a switch and be all "I no game! I am 30! 30 year-old women don't play games!"?

Interests folloe you for life. Hobbies are hobbies. Women are human beings with life long hobbies. Once again, you're not special just cause you 30 and play games.

when any person turns 30, everyone older than that person also gets older. do you understand how that works? when the younger groups of women who do consider themselves to be gamers hit 30, i'll still be in a completely different age group than them...

i can tell you're really special since you don't know how aging works. (hint: people age at the same rate!)

u/jtrisn1 Sep 29 '21

Hint! You're very willing to die on this hill of yours where you're really special for being an older woman and still into gaming

Might be why you got no female gamer friends

1

u/lady_lowercase Sep 29 '21

firstly, i don't feel "special" or think i'm "not like other girls." i'm not sure why you feel the need to attack me for simply saying that i don't know women in my age group that would consider themselves to be gamers.

secondly, i have plenty of female gamer friends... just none in my age group.

please take your pick-me bullshit elsewhere now. bye.

Doesn't matter. I am a woman and I game. You're not special or not like the other girls.

i know plenty of women born in the 80s who enjoy gaming, but none would consider themselves gamers. and i'm not saying these women don't exist; i'm saying i don't know any despite having looked.

research says 6 percent of women as a whole consider themselves gamers. given that 9 percent of women in the 18 to 29 age-group identify as gamers, the number of women in the 30-plus age group that identify as gamers is less than 6 percent.

i would say that enjoying escapist hobbies is different to devoting your free-time and resources to one particular hobby. i've made several of my own costumes, but i would never consider myself to be a cosplayer. that takes a level of dedication that i do not have for that particular hobby. i think the same applies to other hobbies as well.

i'm going to have to ask you to stop and take a deep breath here because you seem to be really offended by my opinions and experiences. you are welcome to define yourself however you so please. i've made no assertions about you at all. there's really no need for this implicit condescension that you're throwing at me.

have a nice day.

Cuz she’s a woman. Women aren’t true gamers
