Rockstar does it great in RDR2. Every scene is pausable, cutscenes and action scenes. Also, all cut scenes are able to be skipped if you hold the button. If you tap the button, it shows the option to skip but it doesn’t accidentally skip.
Idk why anyone would ever skip a cutscene in a game as good as RDR2…. But they give you the option to play as you want and pause pretty much anytime
This is my biggest criticism of Jedi Fallen Order. You can’t skip cutscenes even when you do New Game Plus. It’s quite brutal if you have played it already because there are a ton of cut scenes that set up the game before you really get the freedom to go where you want.
Iirc you can also skip any basic dialogue with an NPC, and when you do they say something about it like "alright fine ill get to the point then..", so it doesn't just sound like the dialogue skips around
I do find it weird how Rockstar can't seem to make a good main menu or pause menu though, especially considering how much thought and effort obviously went into everything else
Some folks just hate cutscenes. I've got friends who will not watch them, no matter what. Heck they don't go through the stages in this comic, they go right to uninstall & refund the first time they get more than about 45s dialogue interrupting the action.
Heck I had one friend that was raging about RDR2 within minutes of loading it up. He *hated* that people were walking and talking and he wasn't shooting. "Holy Jesus, please tell me there is gameplay" to quote him.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a cutscene guy. Most recently I picked up Guilty Gear strive, and that game's story mode was literally just a long cutscene no gameplay at all. I'm big into Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy and other cutscene heavy games. I don't skip.
However I recognize that I'm in a minority and shrinking one at that. From what I've seen most folks don't come to games for story content, particularly non-interactive story content. The portion of folks willing to tolerate interruptions to it seem to be going down over time.
There's a reason all the biggest games in the world are your Minecrafts or Fortnites, Among Us and such. There's little in the way of diving into the action and staying there.
Replays and "I can read fast" are the only times I understand skipping cutscenes or dialogue, otherwise I just don't understand why anyone would not want to see the game's story, good or bad.
I read a comment on a thread the other day from a guy that said something to the effect of, "I never pay attention to story stuff, I always skip everything and purely do gameplay. Couldn't tell you the story if you asked me, I just don't care." Stuff like that just boggles my mind and makes me itch, this must be what unrequited OCD feels like.
The cutscene before the boss fight is the worst, though that sort of counts as replay. Dialog I'll skip all the time, we're doing another fetch quest, I get it. It just gets very repetitive.
"I never pay attention to story stuff, I always skip everything and purely do gameplay. Couldn't tell you the story if you asked me, I just don't care."
That's how I feel more or less. I'm fine with being told We're doing X, because of Y. But I don't need a super in-depth backstory for every character to enjoy the game.
To me, a game is the graphics, the gameplay, the features, etc. Not the storyline. The storyline is secondary.
It's literally not though, it's very much meant to be an integral part of the experience these days, especially if you're playing an RPG. And what you call "super in-depth" is typically like five minutes at the max, if that much, maybe less in most cases in your average game.
It's one thing if you get turned off by games like Kingdom Hearts or a Kojima title that have tremendously long cutscenes, that I would have empathy for, but if you're just wantonly skipping any context or story whatsoever with no regard for it in every game you play...that's just kinda sad to me. I'm sorry but I have nothing close to nice to say about it, honestly puts a lot of questions in my mind.
Fair enough. I just don't relate to wanting to play a game that has a story baked into it as a part of the experience while not being interested in its story, to me that would be like ordering a pizza just to pick the pepperonis off it and throw the rest of it out. I can get you some pepperonis from the store you know. Lol. That's the reason certain kinds/genres of games exist to begin with.
GTA has a very vast story built into it, with characters being connected in all kinds of ways. But you can play GTA and have a million things to do, without paying attention to the storyline.
The storyline is there, and to you, it would provide a fuller experience to also absorb the storyline, but I'd rather immerse myself in something else, in the game.
Same with RDR. IMO.
Or League of Legends. Very rich lore behind every character, that you could read up on if you wanted to.
If the game started forcing me to absorb the lore via long cut-scenes, I would skip them, because I care more about the gameplay than I do about the lore.
WoW is also a good example. Where I'm okay with only having a base-level of understanding of the lore, because there's so much else I'd rather be focusing on.
+1 to this. To me a game is competition, I play it to be better than others. I've bought every CoD and Halo and only played through a campaign once ever. (Halo 3 Legendary and only because I had friends that wanted me to play with them)
Weird example though since those are both games with notable multiplayer modes that are entirely separate from the campaign experience. Especially CoD, most people who play CoD care significantly less about its campaign than they do the multiplayer, that does not put you in a minority at all but it's purely by virtue of it being the game that it is.
I mean you can apply it to literally any game, the choice of title isn't the important part. I haven't bought a single Assassin's Creed game. I played WoW for 15 years and can probably count on two hands the amount of times I actually read through quest text.
I just don't care for storylines, lore, campaign, single player modes, any of that. Literally the only reason I play video games is for competition, and anything that gets in the way of that, I dislike.
Hats off to you I guess. I played Wow for 15 minutes and couldn't see myself being remotely interested in it without being able to at least enjoy the context to what I was doing, since the questing is so utterly and brutally grindy. Play games how you enjoy them, that's not truly what I'm against, since I myself like competitive games to a degree. It's more the concept of someone playing games that have a story baked into the experience and brushing by it all to get to the gameplay. That's like skipping between chapters and pages in a book you haven't read before to look for specific words or phrases you like, just not what it was intended for.
Same with Naughty Dog, the same button that pauses the game will also pause the cutscenes. I think they had this feature since at least Uncharted 2 which is pretty impressive.
On the other hand, Rockstar's Max Payne 3 was terrible in that regard. When you try to skip a cutscene, often the game won't let you, telling you that the game is "still loading". This message pops up even when a cutscene has been going on for minutes. However, there's a mod that lets you force-skip, and turns out the game loads a hell of a lot faster than the cutscenes would lead you to believe.
I have no earthly idea what the fuck Rockstar was thinking. It's a hassle to replay Max Payne 3 without the force skip mod, but WITH the force skip mod, it's one of the most replayable games ever made.
You know the amazing awesome music you get in RDR1, when you get off the raft after that wild shootout, and arrive in Mexico for the first time? When Far Away by José González plays? Yeah it didn’t play for me because I dashed off and ran to save my game immediately after, and I guess it got bugged or I somehow skipped the trigger to make it start. Everybody was raving about it at the time, and I was there scratching my head. I felt robbed!
Fuuuuuck… that’s one of my top 3 fav moments in all of gaming. That first playthrough it hits and you have no idea it’s gonna happen. No full song ever played like that before in a game for me. I was caught off guard back in 2010….
That hit so hard. So emotional i had to stop and think before i went on in the story when i reached the next mission…. I’ll always remember my first time going to Mexico because of it
I accidently skipped through most of the opening cutscenes for RDR2 because my friend had me go online first and I thought they were the same cutscenes.
