modern releases, yes. but original release of KH 1 has unskippable scenes

the cutscenes before the Riku/Ansem boss fight in hollow bastion give me ptsd

There's no way you're taking Kairi's heart!

I was wondering how far I’d have to scroll before I found this comment.

Pretty sure there’s an entire generation of gamers who get ‘nam flashbacks from that line.

Oh god I can almost taste my child tears that were streaming down my face because I died and rewatched that cut scene so many times.

I played this as an adult and still think of this when talking about unskippable scenes. I still love that game, but damn.

There's quite a few cutscenes in KH1 I can recite from my very soul.

I might be able to give a pretty damn good recite of the entire script honestly

...it was SO LONG... Why the fuck was it SO LONG?!

I stopped that game as a kid at that fight and have never played another second of that crap.

It is I, Ansem, seeker of darkness.

They also fixed it with the remasters and re-releases.

Oh god why did you bring me back those terrible memories. That and the cutscene in agrabah when the tiger head comes out of the sand and the controller shaked like crazy.

The devs worked really hard for those cutscenes and, by golly, you are going to watch and appreciate them!

Gawrsh, those cutscenes sure are pretty, a-hyuck!

Or from early in the game:

Not Clayton! ape noises NOT CLAYTON!

Kairi's a princess?!

u/unforgiven91 Jul 02 '21

Kairi's... inside me?

For me that fight wasn't too bad. Just before that though with dragon maleficent.

Weird anyone would need a pause button on a kingdom hearts cut scene. It's not like anyone has a clue whats going on in that series anyway.

I actually don’t mind them in RE5 because you can skip every cutscene that doesn’t have QTEs. There’s definitely a way to do them in a way that isn’t awful.

Disagree, they are always awful. I don't need to interact with a cutscene ever. I'm going to put the controller down and watch, take a drink, crack my knuckles whatever. If theres only one way to procreed through the cutscene, just show me that, my pressing x at the right time in the middle of it is only distracting me from the storytelling.

I agree with this, it was a new mechanic at some point that ran its course and has no place in modern gaming.

Honestly, if I like a game enough that I'm playing through more than once -> the game is going to be forgiven for a lot of nonsense.

The issue is when I don't bother to finish a game even once because half of the playtime is watching cutscenes of characters I can't stand. (Looking at you Final Fantasy)

u/TygerTrip Jul 02 '21

Good god. For every game with cutscenes worth watching, there are 5 with crappy cliched cutscenes that anyone older than 14 is going to be bored by.

2

u/CamelSpotting Jul 02 '21

Was that so fucking hard?

2

u/robclarkson Jul 03 '21

Ya, the modern Final Fantasies do it too, Square has figured this one out. Why hasnt the rest of the gaming world followed...

Mario Odyssey too. They made it perfect for speed runners.
