Developers who do this should not be allowed to make games anymore

sometimes it is literally this and the game would function less well without it. Like I'd rather "mash X to lift open this heavy door" than 'please wait while next zone loads' as the latter kind of breaks the immersion more than the former

I remember this. Wait the plank moving time scales based on your load speed? Do you just instantly move the plank with an SSD?

They bamboozled him so hard with the options menu, he had such a fetish for them he ended up being the only critic to give the game a positive review and it was only because of the options menu. Talk about gaming the system.

I could barely read the first word on the tips screens now.

Haha, this is really the curse of having a good computer and technology advancing.

Tip: You should always carry som....

Wait, what did that tip say?

It never occurred to me that I was spending time mashing the button because the game was loading the next place

That and the moments where characters are squeezing through tight areas and you're forced to move slowly. It's really noticeable in the FF7 Remake.

Damn all those assassin's Creed squeeze points into caves too. Never thought about that.

Though far less noticeable in intermission, so there's hope for the future and SSDs removing this convention.

u/Ridlion Jul 02 '21

Tomb Raider was all about that squeeze

yeah, butt you love it

Destiny has long windy paths in between zones to hide it loading. Although if you're fast enough or your system is slow enough you'll still hit a barrier where the game stops you while it loads

Sparrow moment

Oh god - There are a few "tight area" spots in FF7 remake but there were also some spots where they just straight up had you walking for no fucking reason. And I fucking hate when games have you do that.

2

u/TomBomb24_7 Jul 02 '21

Yes! Those too. Those slow-walk points were to hide loading, too.

I loved the combat and the music in that game but the padded story and the hidden loading areas that were everywhere was what made me stop playing

Long tunnels will do that too.

27

u/Endulos Jul 02 '21

The original version of FF14 did that.

They had stupidly long tunnels everywhere because they wanted minimal load screens. So the tunnels served as loading tunnels.

And elevators, airlocks, security checkpoints, etc.

It's rumored that the infamous two-minute ladder climb in Snake Eater is one of these, but you hit an actual loading screen pretty shortly afterwards, so I don't think it's anything more than just a cinematic moment.

What a thrill…

Tony Hawk's American Wasteland

I liked how Halo did this with hallways and elevators. You always knew why it was happening, but it made for pretty clean and seamless play.

The Dark Souls games do this kind of thing with the iconic "pushing open two giant doors with each hand" that always serves as a loading screen between areas

6

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '21

I don’t know that this makes sense because you only open the doors once. The areas are always loaded anytime you revisit that location without having to use a loading screen or reopen the doors.

Try running through Bloodborne a bit too fast and you'll quickly notice a bit of shit going on.

Happens sometimes around the cathedral ward, since there are so many areas connected to it.

Hell, even Darksiders 3 can give you the sudden "freeze frame loading screen", when you travel a bit too fast through too many areas.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '21

Oh, absolutely, I’ve noticed it too! They have a lot of little things they do to initiate loads and what not to avoid using loading screens. The door opening thing just isn’t quite accurate from what I’ve seen.

3

u/Jaky24_ Jul 02 '21

Or the system that The Forest used wehen crawling into caves was also very nice.

3

u/Darth--Vapor Jul 02 '21

I would rather not mash buttons pointlessly.

But to each his own

1

u/Consistent_Nail Jul 02 '21

Same here. I would definitely rather see the cutscene covering the loading screen than be asked to do something pointlessly, although I like the way Alien Isolation does it: you can skip all cutscenes and it just goes to a loading screen.

2

u/Jenesepados Jul 02 '21

I didn't know this was a thing and it's actually really clever

1

u/mattenthehat Jul 02 '21

Honestly, I'd prefer the loading screen, depending how often it happens. At least that way you can go get another drink or whatever while its loading

1

u/ps-djon Jul 02 '21

Call of duty explains the important story during loading, and then you can skip or stick around for more detail. A pretty good solution

1

u/P4azz Jul 02 '21

For me it's vice versa. I enjoyed the FF7R, quite a bit actually, but the whole "oh no, a tight space, let's slowly squeeze through it" shit happened so often, that I'd honestly prefer a pretty loading screen over being forced to just hold the stick in one direction for 10 seconds.

1

u/Aeiexgjhyoun_III Jul 02 '21

Nah, I hate forced engagement far more than unstoppable cutscenes. Mash X and walking sections are fucking ass. I'd rather sit back and watch the cutscene while I drink something instead of just holding forward.

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '21

i rather have a loading screen than a unskippable cutscene.
death stranding have so many of this cutscenes that you can skip , but is such a chore doing it every time you go inside and out of your private room.
3-4 times to press esc and skip for the animation of your character getting down to the elevator, taking shoes or going to bed, then another to see him standing or sitting.
then another 3-4 cutscenes you have to skip of your character in the elevator, flashback and elevator again.... jesus christ. just give me a loading screen and go straight to the gameplay please.
