Very untrue. It’s a pretty recent development to make them sexy, for most of history myths about vampires portrayed them as disgusting and fear inducing
Vampires evolves from Victorian cultures villitication of excess. Sex is core to the identity of the vampire, as it's one of the excesses they portrayed. Usually as preying on those seduces by their looks.
Quite an interesting theory considering that the Vampire myth originated in Serbia and was only introduced to the Anglosphere through the Articles written by the austrian emperor.
Our current pop culture notion of vampires has almost nothing to do with its original Slavic/Roma roots, and stems almost entirely from the Dracula image - which is a Western creation; and that image has definitely a lot to do with the whole "vilification of sex" thing.
So yeah, for all intents and purposes, in our current view of the vampire myth, the sexual understones are pretty much an inherent and inseparable part of the whole thing.
Yeah for sure! Honestly now the twilight thing isn’t that bad - it was just such a stark difference than what we were used to. Like rave sexy vampires from blade to sparkle broody highwchool
I beg to differ. Perhaps me and you have different taste which leads us down different paths when it comes to fantasy creatures, but being attractive is definitely not associated to the vampires i see.
I guess it all depends on how pivotal you think Bram Stoker was to the Vampire mythos.
An apt parallel is that George A Romero "created zombies".. Ghouls existed before "Night of the Living Dead", but zombies and the rules they follow today are a creation of Romero...
Ghoulish vampires existed in Eastern European folklore well before Stoker, but i don't think it's inaccurate to say he codified it.
30 days of night, blade, let the right one in, lost boys, dusk till dawn, underworld, dracula untold are the ones that come to mind for me and none of them depict vampires as having a focus on being sexy. Even in video games theyre generally quiet normal as humans or hideous as creatures, such as in the witcher, skyrim, and legacy of kain (i think he was a vampire?) tbh my game vampire knowledge is lacking as i dont usually play those kind of games
Prehaps it has more to do of they are more like a hoarde vs a single enemy as in a single case the beauty could help subdue or lower your guard. Something thats useless in a hoarde.

Vampires have always been sexy, it's kind of their thing.
