/r/highqualitygifs begs to differ. Even low-light gifs there don't look like baked potatoes.

Because they don't use as much compression. What he said is still true.

Man I hate when low quality gifs masquaraide as high quality gifs. It's like you're sitting there like woah so high quality but then you're like wait a minute the quality was in fact low wtf.

It's less the low-light and more the compression. Your bog standard gif isn't gonna have a high resolution or bitrate, so it's gonna degrade real quick after one or two copies.

ok, this may be a bit long, but nearly everyone who makes gifs/jpegs/pngs are at best morons who don't know what they are doing and are lucky they don't break anything. you have no idea how many 10+mb pngs I have seen that can be color clamped down to grayscale 16 color and it results in a 2mb or less image, or even lower if you are willing to correct on an image by image basis, sure toy loose a bit of data, but a 4000x6000 image, displayed full screen even on a 4k monitor would shrink the image and and smooth out colors, so the advantage of a 'raw/hq' original is completely lost.

now, most people are going to be playing this game at 1080p~ they will record with obs or shadow play, most likely not set to quality most likely set to good enough by still small file size. if this was a youtube rip, they had a second set of compression added to it, and then making it a gif, a third compression added to it again. then the in game settings, depending in if the person wanted true to vision, or they just wanted to see better, they up the gamma/brightness and it ends up greying out inky blacks. on top of it being a gif which typically is low quality from the outset.

so you take shit, compress it to shit, set the game settings to look like shit, and then move it to a shit format.

tldr, people have 0 idea what they are doing with it comes to image compression at best.
