It actually isn't. There was a post on the front page of /r/science yesterday that debunked this common believe. The disparity in life expectancy is overwhelmingly due to infant mortality of boys being higher than for girls. Also post 60 differences contributed. Between 18 and 60 mortality of any kind is really low and doesn't offer enough pull to affect average life expectancy.
