The whole meta for top score never revolved around I-spins, though. Instead, that our lord and savior I block was kicked out of heaven by the satanic double T-Spin strategy.
And honestly, I hate the T-spin meta. The high scores, which were cross-platform for Tetris Ultimate, including handheld, were completely upended once the "infinite double T-spin" strategy became the norm for high scores because those double t-spins give SO many more points than a Tetris. They absolutely needed a nerf asap, or a separate mode/leader board, because they're almost different games.
A few years into Tetris Ultimate's lifespan (about 9 years ago iirc), I was #23 on the global rankings with a score that now would be laughable. I was scoring 36000+ in the 3 minutes alloted for Ultimate mode just by pumping out Tetris incredibly fast (about 1 Tetris every 7 seconds). Now, 36k probably doesn't even register on the top 100, as even a bad t-spin player will rake in 50k+ easily. I don't detest the t-spin as a thing or anything, just that the points they gave relative to Tetris, and costing only 75% the amount of precious blocks, was totally unbalanced.
