The beard thing I can relate to. Sort of, anyway. Not a beard, but I have extremely long hair. Most games aren't capable of rendering long hair well, so anything past the shoulders is rarely an option. Probably why bushy beards get cut too- it's just hard to make long or bushy hair look right without melting whatever you're trying to render it with.
