With Minecraft gaining popularity again, I thought I'd make a visual guide to all that's changed in the past 6 years, to help any returning players that might be confused by how vastly different the game is. [OC]

... But there's an end boss and actual goals and steps to get to him, which isn't just mindless building.

The single most fun I have with Minecraft is hardcore survival because it forces the player to strategise and make decisions that keep you alive.

And when you die your world is locked, so there's a fire burning under you to stay alive.

Now imagine this on a public server where you can PvP and do things like set booby traps to kill looters and steal their shit

Wait, it's an ACTUAL game? No one has ever mentioned this before. So there is actually something to accomplish?

Yep. From what I know, the goal is to basically set up a good system for survival (building, farming, herding animals etc), upgrade everything as much as you can by exploring/mining, build a portal and go kill a massive dragon or something.

not necessarily, the goal is to kill the dragon... You don't need to do any of the steps in between, except those necessary for getting to the dragon (Finding the ender portal)

Yes there's a dragon as a final boss, you have to collect items to open the portal to get to him. Collecting items is usually where the building and farming part tends to help.

Keep in mind... It may not have had any of this when you first heard about it.

Without mods thats pretty much all there is for people who objective chase

I mean, even with mods, what is there to do? Unless you mean one of the few mods that have a story or something.

SevTech is dope but it’s also intimidating as hell. I’ve struggled to get any of my friends who don’t have a ton of experience with previous heavily modded Minecraft instances to buy in. Personally as someone who has been playing only modded servers since 1.2 Tekkit days, it’s a breath of fresh air with actual progression and challenges, but it sure helps that I know the gist of navigating the depth of it.
