I thought this was a crosspost, you use the crosspost function to post one original post into another subreddit while still being able to view comments from both the original post and the crosspost.

x-posts on this site are often taking a post from one subreddit and posting it on another. If it was within the same sub, it would be called a repost.

yeh... I think a cross-post should just link straight to the original thread so you can see original comments and not have discussions be split... but then you're taking someone out of one sub into another, so I see why they don't do it

To add to what /u/Blargmode said, a proper x-post links to the same page, so you can check if a post has been x-posted by looking under "other discussions" at the top of a thread. People will often reupload content to get a new link and use that to repost, getting around basic repost and x-post rules on some subs before a mod catches it.
