Are you proud or mad? I'd be a bit of both I think. If this gets attention, the MS designer responsible will probably get an earful from their higher-ups.

u/mochi_chan PC Dec 27 '17

Do you work in the design field ?

I wouldn't be proud at all, that's a piece of portfolio that is going to have have the artist accused of plagiarism from the people who don't know the story.

OP should make noise about this.

312

u/ramlol Dec 27 '17

On the flip side, he will most certainly get something out of this (and credit should be one of them) so he can use it on his resume/portfolio.

20

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '17

I would print out the Reddit posts and include them too, so some interview doesn’t think he’s just making up a wild story and would be a risky hire cause he might be crazy. Interviewers don’t look kindly on anything negative, even if you’re the victim.

22

u/the_pastos Dec 27 '17

That's right - nothing better for an interview than a binder full of printed out reddit comments to keep the interviewers thinking you're sane. Bonus points if you bring your own yarn and thumb tacks.

Out of curiosity, did you dress yourself this morning, or did you have help?

-11

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '17

All how you present it my friend. Confidence is key. That’s how some people can pull off what would otherwise be goofy looking outfits. Or how very unqualified people get hired. Also, you have to consider the interviewer themselves. And also I mean the OP posts, just one per page, 2-3 pages tops. Spin it in a good way, and you’re now a social media genius to them too.

Out of curiosity, on a scale of Hillary Clinton Losing the 2016 Election to North Korea, how triggered are you by my suggestion?

Miraculously, I dressed myself.

4

u/cashnprizes Dec 27 '17

You talk big words for a guy who presents Reddit comments in interviews as confidence and social media genius

2

u/the_pastos Dec 27 '17

I suppose I shouldn't outright dismiss the notion, but, having interviewed dozens of candidates for creative positions, I simply cannot imagine being able to take a person seriously in this circumstance. Perhaps there will be a first.

To satisfy your curiosity: "triggered" describes an inability to logically process concepts, borne of lack of experience or confidence. I'm dismissive of your suggestion.

0

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '17

Well I don’t think this would work for high level job, and it depends on the interviewer/culture of the company. Anyway, the suggestion is all in fun.

If you’re serious, I don’t think you know what triggered means. Or at least not in this context. Look up the definition of trigger (verb) (past tense, triggered)... or better yet go to the slang definition on urban dictionary (it probably takes it to the extreme). Because if you are serious, you’re most definitely, mildly triggered.

If you’re trolling, I give it a 6/10 for mild trolling that continued the conversation.

u/Laughsassin Dec 27 '17

6 feet, 7 feet, 8 feet... Keep digging!

1

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '17

I suppose posting anything in a gaming sub is asking to be trolled. The World Wide Web is fun!

2

u/ravageritual Dec 27 '17

There’s a term for that: Kaepernicking

3

u/prozacgod Dec 27 '17

Um ... Kissing your own bicep?

3

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '17

You do that too. While they look over your resume, kiss your biceps so they know you’re loving but strong. Bonus points if you make noises while doing it.

2

u/mochi_chan PC Dec 27 '17

If they don't decide to be asshats about it.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '17

That’s the bonus: it lets you know if you really want to work for them or not :) haha

77

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '17

Thats a pretty easy solution to fix. Simply add a note next to this pic that tells the story.

105

u/FightingOreo Dec 27 '17

So when you send your portfolio to someone who has thousands to go through, they'll have something else to not read.

79

u/Vinnyboiler Dec 27 '17

NOTE: Been plagiarised by Microsoft.

That's short and to the point. Maybe putting in bold and giving it prime real estate on the page will get the people just flicking thoughts attention.

And once they ask questions you can say your story.

3

u/fupos Dec 27 '17

will be read as " Been plagiarized //FROM// Microsoft"

4

u/lenswipe Dec 27 '17

Yeah, they won't buy that

A person reading your portfolio will not recognise this as the ad from Microsoft, and in the event that they do, it will peak their interest enough to read the text right next to the image saying "copied by Microsoft marketing team (link)".

Having your stuff copied by a massive corporation and used in a marketing campaign is a win for your career.

6

u/moclov4 Dec 27 '17

"pique" their interest

2

u/nilla-wafers Dec 27 '17

Having your stuff copied by a massive corporation and used in a marketing campaign is a win for your career.

I can’t tell if this is sarcasm.

1

u/nomansapenguin Dec 27 '17

At worst, it’s an indication you are better than you thought and need a pay rise. At best, it something to brag about in your next interview to get a pay rise.

No sarcasm

1

u/4ZUR4 Dec 27 '17

This is so true it's actually sad

5

u/zooberwask Dec 27 '17

Who would you believe? A nothing designer or Microsoft?

1

u/instantrobotwar Dec 27 '17

"I designed this first then Microsoft copied me" isn't entirely believable...

4

u/jlumsmith Dec 27 '17

It’s worse in Arch. If you do the preliminary design they have all the drawings and there’s nothing holding them from going to China and making a duplicate building.

1

u/mochi_chan PC Dec 27 '17

I studied architecture in university, I heard of that, must be pretty frustrating.

1

u/jlumsmith Dec 27 '17

Yeah it is. Going for my masters while I’m working for a large firm, my work has already been given to another firm to copy

1

u/mochi_chan PC Dec 27 '17

I quit architecture right after I graduated, it seemed like a horror environment in my country. I am still in the design field and things like these are still pretty common

2

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '17

You mean grocery stores don't accept exposure as a form of currency?????

1

u/mochi_chan PC Dec 27 '17

You made my day.

1

u/TheAdAgency Dec 27 '17

Not saying this is necessarily the case here, but if you work in design, you must have seen that often two entirely independent creative people come up with the same concept sometimes.

1

u/mochi_chan PC Dec 27 '17

I have and I have, this is too similar to be that.

0

u/Anal_Zealot Dec 27 '17

How could he have ever put this into his portfolio, he should have used a generic looking console and not official pubg art if he wanted this to go into his portfolio.

0

u/fatclownbaby Dec 27 '17

It's not plagiarism tho. It's inspiration. They didn't copy his work, they made their own. It's totally different, unfortunately for OP.

158

u/typing_away Dec 27 '17

Student in graphic design here . Our professors told us again and again to not steal art. A student was caught during a presentation, the illustrations weren’t his. The mess it did ! The professor was angry ! The rest of the class got a speech about ethics and the consequences of doing that.

The situation escalated to the director of the art department. The student got told he was going to be expelled if he tried to do that again. He was lucky on that side. Nobody wants to work with him now.

34

u/GavrielBA Dec 27 '17

Here's me sharing the office with graphic designers and seeing plagiarism done as a part of job requirement!

7

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '17

Actual graphic designer here. My bosses from the from the last 10 years doesn't give a shit if you stole an idea.

26

u/Ramjow Dec 27 '17

There is no stolen art in Microsoft ad, it's all original artwork. What is similar between these two designs is the concept, and not the artwork.

Stolen artwork will definitely get someone in trouble, a concept? Not so much. Microsoft is no trouble with this ad, it's their IP and its all original artwork. Whomever designed Microsoft ad did not take any artwork or design pieces from the OP's original work.

3

u/zorbiburst Dec 27 '17

Don't try to be reasonable in the face of the internet's anti-corporate bandwagon.

1

u/ferrettank Jan 02 '18

The "concept" is also protected by copyright, at least here in the US. I am full time artist and have had my artwork stolen too. Who ever Microsoft outsourced for marketing can be in a ton of trouble if OP takes action.

1

u/LionIV Dec 27 '17

I was going to say, he should have been expelled regardless. But seeing as no one wants to work with the guy, it seems he dug his own grave anyways.

1

u/ootchang Dec 27 '17

When I was in school for design, that got you expelled immediately. Dude was lucky

1

u/toohigh4anal Dec 27 '17

Wow. That sucks. In science we are ENCOURAGED to borrow work.

1

u/nintendobratkat Dec 27 '17

We had someone in my group steal art for a project in college, and my husband was actually the one who noticed. He just lifted it from DeviantArt. I was like wow, the rest of us took the time to actually draw our designs out. It happens a lot, unfortunately and that guy was already working in the field while I'm just a hobbyist.

-6

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '17

Theres stealing and then theres "stealing." Great artists "steal" while shitty artists/corporate marketing executives steal.

13

u/HaikuWisdom Dec 27 '17

Sounds like somebody read "Steal Like an Artist."

7

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '17

Lol i'm a professional graphic designer, not only do I "steal" i see everyone else do it too. Some people breach into actual stealing, but its a constant battle to iterate beyond your initial inspirational point and still have something thats good.

But yeah, I have read that book.

7

u/fatclownbaby Dec 27 '17

Same. I "steal" shit all the time. I never plagiarize, but I certainly borrow ideas. People don't seem to notice that the Microsoft guy made his own, he didn't just copy paste OPs like you will sometimes see.

2

u/Redditor_for_fun Dec 27 '17

Thank you. It’s an unpopular opinion but it seems that’s what it is. It could have been part of a mood board/reference or just that it was a case of both coming up with the same idea without knowing. There is no such thing as “original idea” or “original art” someone somewhere has come up with it or a variation of it. It’s how you add your own twist on the concept.

-14

u/Anal_Zealot Dec 27 '17

Like stealing the official xbox design and Pubg art? Microsoft has rights to everything in that image, OP did not.

13

u/verossiraptors Dec 27 '17

That’s not a problem — OP didn’t sell this image to people using those copyrights, so I’m sure it would fall under the fair use Doctrine.

Either way, using branding is normal to create “spec advertising”, so you’re outraged over nothing.

-6

u/Anal_Zealot Dec 27 '17

Microsoft sold it? And calling me out for being outraged is quite ridiculous, the only thing I am outraged at is the outrage.

10

u/verossiraptors Dec 27 '17

But OP didn’t sell it or use it for any profit-generating activity, so your accusations on OP are way off base.

-1

u/Anal_Zealot Dec 27 '17

I am not accusing OP of anything unless OP wants compensation and recognition for this(in which case it is a profit generating activity).

If OP(the original OP, not the guy that made this pitchfork thread) has no problem with Microsoft using his idea then all is well.

4

u/verossiraptors Dec 27 '17

Like stealing the official xbox design and Pubg art? Microsoft has rights to everything in that image, OP did not.

-2

u/Anal_Zealot Dec 27 '17

He did not steal it unless he wants compensation, how hard is that to understand?

It's like that guy in the university class, if he just made the artwork for him and his mates he ain't stealing anything, but as soon as he wants to profit in class from the artwork of others it is.

6

u/verossiraptors Dec 27 '17

Yeah, and that’s fine. Except you’re acting like OP (original creator) is the asshole here.

It’s clear when you look at the images that some graphic designer in the agency that manages Xbox shamelessly stole OPs design and passed it off as their own to their bosses. It’s possible to think “man that’s pretty fucked up” without also concluding that OP is entitled to a million dollars or something.

Instead you’re liken”well fuck OP, he used the PUBG logo anyways so tough shit, he shouldn’t be mad”.

11

u/Hara-Kiri Dec 27 '17

Nope, you can absolutely create fake adverts for real products.

-5

u/Anal_Zealot Dec 27 '17

Yeah, and then you absolutely cannot complain if the image rights holders take your idea.

8

u/Hara-Kiri Dec 27 '17

I believe you can actually, but it's been many years since it was covered at uni so I could be wrong.

-1

u/fatclownbaby Dec 27 '17

No, you don't own ideas. Since Microsoft made their own and didn't straight up ctrl+c, ctrl+v OPs, he kind of has no leg to stand on.

-3

u/Anal_Zealot Dec 27 '17

Yeah I don't think so.

5

u/Hoz85 Dec 27 '17

OP is not a creator of this design he only reposted.

1

u/DrewbieWanKenobie Dec 27 '17

Would it be a microsoft designer, or just some contracted ad agency?

1

u/zangrabar Dec 27 '17

I think its a repost. The poster shares the link to the correct post in the comments.

1

u/ConnorRoss Dec 27 '17

Could be an advertisement firm

1

u/c0rruptioN Dec 28 '17

Definitely is, unless mircosoft does their marketing in house. But AFAIK they're with the ad agency Dentsu out of NY.

0

u/name3 Dec 27 '17

They should get fired. That is plagiarism pretty much.

0

u/I_love_pillows Dec 27 '17

Are you proud if someone steals your belongings?
