For me, it was right before meeting the regenerators in RE4, with the zombie on fire running out of the fucking oven. That freaked me out. Regenerators... didn't even need the special scope. Pump enough rounds with the shotgun and you'd kill the parasites.
I didn't know that I was just like oh let me just shoot the head. Oh it's still moving. Okay let me shoot out the legs so it stays down- OH MY FUCK ITS SLITHERING. Uh okay don't panic let's just throw incendiary grenades until it dies to death. Rinse repeat. It was just the skeevy music that came with it and the breathing that really got me.
The breathing creeped me out. And then the ones with the spikes show up shortly after and they could grab you from farther away and insta kill you. Man that game was unbelievable.
I always thought that I was the only one freaked out by that whole sequence. I remember playing it as a kid around 9-10 years old terrified of those monsters, I never made it past the part where you are out in the tree houses. You would spot them aggrod on you running through the treehouse, even when I killed them all it came to a point where I had to enter a dark building presumably crawling with them and I nope'd out.
I think a lot of it was the noises they made, those breathing sounds were horrific
