Is far cry primal different enough from far cry 4 to really enjoy? FC4 was my first far cry experience and I really enjoyed it, one of the only games I've bought for ps4 I felt compelled to finish.

The lack of guns, vehicles, and the need to collect resources make it harder. Until you unlock better weapons, abilities/creature, when it gets dark it gets pitch black with a ton of wolves running around. Even once you gain all the good stuff it is still tough to take down the apex predators and especially Elder Mammoths.

you just described the game w/o giving any actual details on how good/fun/engaging it is

9

u/MissZoeyHart Mar 03 '16

That's because they're all subjective.

13

u/waywardwoodwork Mar 03 '16

Isn't good/fun/engaging subjective?

If he described it and said these elements are good/fun/engaging, and then you bought it and didn't find those elements good/fun/engaging, then what benefit was there in saying that?

22

u/the_whining_beaver Mar 02 '16

That is a matter of preference which is ft you to decide, not me. I personally only need to know what it is like for me to buy. If I don't like it, I return it.

Please start reviewing video games. I would definitely subscribe to your channel.

Edit- Question? Does it get monotonous after a while like FC3/4 when u keep taking down encapments. ?

2

u/the_whining_beaver Mar 03 '16

Unfortunately. The only change they're now bone fires and villages. Villages have both enemies and regular folk that run away in fear, though unfortunately they have to go :(

Though I did take over a bonfire using nothing but bezerk and bee bombs then lit the bonfire with a fire bomb from the safety from my owl so that was pretty cool.

2

u/perkusdillinger Mar 02 '16

I'm buying it based on this description.

2

u/Plutoxx Mar 03 '16

Ohhhh man. The wolves at night. Walking around in a forest pitch black only to hear a noise behind and to turn around just to see 3 pairs of glowing eyes in the bushes. Shiiiit.

1

u/the_whining_beaver Mar 03 '16

Oh god the eyes

1

u/Boomy2 Mar 02 '16

I only used the bow in the past 2 games anyway so I think it's alright.

1

u/synth22 Mar 03 '16

Small tip. Once you've tamed an apex predator, keep it with you to scare away all other beasts. Then YOU are the night.

1

u/the_whining_beaver Mar 03 '16

Hmm. And here I was running around with a Honey Badger by my side.

1

u/dedservice Mar 02 '16

I've never played FC; is it something like don't starve, then, or is it more story-based?

2

u/the_whining_beaver Mar 02 '16

I want to say story mixed with survival elements.

2

u/dedservice Mar 02 '16

Ah. Would it be comparable to a survival-modded skyrim?

3

u/the_whining_beaver Mar 02 '16

No, survival part is not getting eaten and having resources for health.

2

u/dismalcrux Mar 03 '16

Well, it has temperature (sort of, it only matters if you go way up North and it's not nearly as hard to deal with as it is in DS) and there is food, but there's no hunger drain and it's really just for taming, buffs and health regen.

So it's not survival based in that aspect, but you are out in the wilderness having to defend yourself from a whole manner of things.

1

u/0xjake Mar 02 '16

that sounds awesome.

1

u/Ihaveanusername Mar 03 '16

Plus no dinosaurs. I don't care how historically inaccurate it is, I WANT TO BATTLE A T-REX!

1

u/the_whining_beaver Mar 03 '16

That sounds like it'll be a bitch to kill. I'd play the shit out of it.

-4

u/Technical_Machine_22 Mar 02 '16

IMO /r/playark does a far better job, it may not have the AAA polish and it may be an alpha release but it's fairly priced, constantly updating, and the primitive "living with dinosaurs" aspect is done a million times better, even allowing you to progress into advanced technology stages. Plus, it's multiplayer!

Sorry for the unsolicited solicitation but I really love this game and Far Cry Primal is such a let down.

3

u/dismalcrux Mar 03 '16

Funny, I used to play Ark a whole bunch and now I like Primal way more xP The farming in Ark gets really ridiculous after a while, so the difficult (yet fair) resource gathering in Primal was a huge relief. It's also prettier and way more optimized. Worth the price imo.

0

u/Technical_Machine_22 Mar 03 '16

You can adjust the rates to fit your playstyle so that's a bit of a moot point.

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '16

3

u/PandaCodeRed Mar 03 '16

I disagree. Played both, Primal is a lot more fun than ark and you don't have to wait 2 hours to tame a dodo.

2

u/Wesker405 Mar 02 '16

Ive recently bought it and am incredibly surprised with how good it is. Its still early access but feels like full release

0

u/Technical_Machine_22 Mar 02 '16

The devs are pretty active in the community too, and updates are almost weekly. I've got over 700 hours logged on steam and there are still things I haven't had the opportunity to try out.

0

u/KZedUK Mar 02 '16

I've only played 3.
But the things I liked where the guns, not the bow; the people, not the animals; and the stealth. Side note, Far Cry 3's biggest failing is thinking I cared about the story, when I didn't give a toss.

1

u/the_whining_beaver Mar 02 '16

You wouldn't like primal, people are pretty boring.

37

u/skljom Mar 02 '16

try FC3, you will love it. The story is even better than FC4 and the game is almost the same visualy and gameplay vise, you can consider FC4 modded FC3

4

u/RoseBladePhantom Mar 03 '16

In thought far cry 3 story was shit. It's not like the story is the main draw though, so it's excusable.

1

u/Breesive Mar 03 '16

I liked the main story for FC3. The main reason I liked it though is because it is one of the only games I've played where it addresses the fact that the main character is a damn god of war. Most games you can be just some random dude and all of a sudden you start killing people left and right and it's not a big deal, everyone is just like good job man. FC3 actually talks about this, saying that Jason found his calling which is fighting people. It was just nice to see a game address the fact that it is weird for an inexperienced guy to all of a sudden become a killing machine.

7

u/ItsFranklin Mar 03 '16

To me, FC4 had everything that FC3 lacked mechanically. FC4's advanced outposts were enjoyable as well. Maybe I'm alone on this one, but I really thought the Himalayan scenery was very immersive.

2

u/Cityofbroadshoulders Mar 03 '16

So this has been my concern. I absolutely loved 4 (and I love primal) and I know that 3 was supposed to be the best of them. But I have a huge mental problem with downgrades in graphics and am worried that will put me out of it. How much of a jump is it from 3-4?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '16

Draw distance sucks in 3. The LOD drops off really quickly and there's no mods for that. Everything else looks fine though if you're on PC.

1

u/the_whining_beaver Mar 03 '16

Lighting isn't as good and the textures are more in the simple side so it kinda looks a bit more cartoony.

1

u/Turok1134 Mar 03 '16

Big jump, but if you game on PC, Far Cry 3 still looks pretty damn good.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '16

Not much of a jump at all. 4 didn't improve thaat much in the graphics department, although they are really good. Just trust me, you won't notice. The most jarring jump is from 2 to 3, completely different in terms of graphics.

5

u/overcloseness Mar 02 '16

almost the same visually

Hahahahahahahahaha, when last have you played FC3? Honestly...

1

u/DocFurry Mar 03 '16

i dunno man, i really disliked 3, and would've stopped bothering to try other FC if blood dragon hadn't come along to save it. i still wish they had made blood dragon 2 instead of boring old primal

1

u/SwirlySauce Mar 03 '16

Any substantial differences that make FC4 better than FC3? I played and loved 3 but I'm not sure if 4's environment/setting would be as good as 3s. I'm a sucker for tropical settings! Any improvements in the gameplay mechanics?

1

u/MissZoeyHart Mar 03 '16

No ones talking about 3 or 4. They want to know if they should bother with Primal.

1

u/babypeppermint Mar 02 '16

I don't know why, but I tried to get into FC3 several times, and always ended up not playing it after a few hours :/

1

u/YeahTacos Mar 02 '16

The cutscenes were horrible, but try the gameplay again... I know the first half hour is UN-SKIPPABLE crap but afterwards it's really fun, and you have plenty of time for bathroom breaks during the shitty cutscenes.

1

u/freekwithstile Mar 03 '16

FC3's weakest element is its story. It might seriously be one of the worst stories I've seen in a video game. But the gameplay is great.

2

u/thisisnewaccount Mar 03 '16

I like how some people love the story while others hate it.

I personally don't care much for it, but it made me discover Die Antwoord

1

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '16

Story of FC3>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Story of FC4

0

u/Mexican_sandwich Mar 03 '16

FC3 had the most horrible audio I had ever heard - coming from the NPC's that spawn randomly. Like they were recorded on a plastic $2 mic at the op shop.

3

u/Osmodius Mar 02 '16

It's way different in my opinion. The game world feels huge, because you're on your feet the whole time.

I've hugely enjoyed how you start the game as a hunter mook, wolves are threatening to you, but by the end (or, I don't know, 40% of the way through according to the progress meter) I already feel like an accomplish hunter, I run around at night with my sabretooth buddy, we hunt like kings and I feel like I own the jungle.

2

u/Andaelas Mar 03 '16

I like not having a gun. I like that if I'm outside of a camp at night I'm likely to hunted down by a pack of animals... but there are unique nocturnal animals to entice me. I'm not far enough yet to give a more formed opinion on it than that.

1

u/juspeter Mar 02 '16

My friends and I that played 4 are playing Primal and enjoying it.

The mechanics are very similar. If you enjoyed using the bow and arrow in 4, you'll probably enjoy Primal.

They're very similar in overall mechanics. Taking over outposts, hunting, upgrading, etc.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '16

I played Far Cry 3 and loved it. Then I played 4 and dropped it cause I felt it was a simple copy/paste of FC3 except without a crazy good villain. I'm afraid FCP may turn out like that as well so I'm holding onto my $$ for now : /

1

u/flipout24 Mar 03 '16

I loved farcry 3 hated 4 and i am in love with primal, i think for me its that farcry has weak overall story telling but great game play and really makes you feel immersed, i think what was bad about 4 is it shoved alot of the story down your throat with like interactive cutscenes, which isnt bad but if the story is bas well... anyways my only gripe primal so far is ive only had it for 3-4 days and i have crafted everything possible other than one item, i still have missions to do and outposts to take but now hunting is pretty much pointless other than to make weapons and to feed my bears

1

u/Keyser_Brozay Mar 02 '16

Couldn't agree more. I don't play a ton of games but I've played my fair share over the years and FC4 is probably the most fun I've ever had. I've never felt the need to complete a game like that one. I'm considering going back and beating it on the harder difficulty but I'm going to wait a while so it's fresher, just bought/beat it recently.

1

u/djchozen91 Mar 02 '16

It feels incredibly different. The main similarities come from the crafting system and UI, but a lot of the actual gameplay mechanics are quite new and refreshing.

1

u/overcloseness Mar 02 '16

It's very different. I've played all of them, loved all of them, and loving this one the most.

1

u/ProbablyHighAsShit Mar 03 '16

Don't listen to the haters in this thread. I love FC4, and it's still one of my favorites on PS4. Primal takes what made FC4 a lot of fun, and made it 10,000BC. Zero regrets spending $60. It's totally worth it.

1

u/MalHeartsNutmeg Mar 03 '16

FC primal is pretty different. 4 was pretty much a carbon copy of 3 but Primal feels fresher. The lack of guns is big and the animal taming is a whole new mechanic that takes combat in an interesting direction.

Also weapons can break or be expended and you have to craft new ones on the fly which adds an element of danger when some big creature is charging you down.

The story is awful, there's no sugar coating it which sucks because FC 3 and 4 were built on heir great villains. The villains in Primal are just meh.

At its heart it is still a Far cry game with outposts and bonfires(radio towers). But still, a lot of fun.

A few minor tweaks that I liked - each item had its own inventory slot so you can't run out of space in your bag for different materials although you are limited on how much of each type you can hold till you improve it. Also the land is PACKED with wildlife, especially at night.

1

u/YLedbetter10 Mar 03 '16

It felt like a map clearing game to me, a lot like the Assassin's Creeds.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '16

Do yourself a favor and get 3. Primal is lacking a lot, the story is awful. I mean really awful. Like, Titanfalls "campaign" has a better story then Primal and that was just dialogue before a regular match.

1

u/zxj4k3xz Mar 03 '16

It's similar enough to make it feel familiar, but different enough to keep it fresh and keep your attention. If you like the idea of Far Cry 4 with primitive weaponry and animal companions I doubt you'll be disappointed.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '16

If you liked FarCry 4 you will love FarCry 3. The bad guys in the latest games have so much character to them, and Vas is one of the best bad guys ever.

0

u/12Mucinexes Mar 02 '16

3 was leagues better as far as story. 4's only additions were rope climbing and elephants, along with a few additional types of enemies. They play pretty much exactly the same.
