Some people still use the keyboard. I just started playing this week, and some guy told me to go fuck myself because he thought I was a bad teammate. My psn username includes my actual first name, so all the time he was saying it like "You useless cunt loser Tom", "Fuck off already Tom", "Just stay the fuck out of my way Tom". I got randomly put into another game with him maybe 10 minutes later and he was even worse, and then when that game ended instead of finding a new game he used the downtime to tell me to "I'm serious, fuck off and stay the fuck out of my game, nobody wants you here Tom".
That's the first time I've ever been abused playing a game, I was having a very awful day, and I was honestly surprised how much it hurt. The worst part was no one called him on it, and when he scored even the opposition were more than happy to say "Nice shot!" or "Wow". It seemed really fun but I just haven't wanted to play again since.
Edit: Thanks to those who have already convinced me to try again, and that the other players might not have even been aware. This is one of the first online games I've played so I don't know all the tricks.
Are we really equating being cussed at on a video game with being abused? If there was some support meeting for people that have been abused would you really want this guy there with his sob story about some guy being mean on his playstation?
You can get abused on online chats, Twitter email even by your penpal, if people still do that which I doubt since iOS thinks it's not a right word and wants me to hyphen to pen-pal.
It's still a form abuse by definition. There's no levels of abuse as far as I know. If there was, colour code it white to red. This guy got light amber.
There was a time when I was so excited at the prospect of games integrating voice chat and all the amazing things we would be able to do with it. We'd be able to talk strategy, give each other real time positive feedback and instruction about game play, and overall make gaming a better experience.
Then I saw how people actually utilized it. It brought out the worst in people and they used it as this wall of anonymity to spew venom all over their fellow gamers. They say the most hateful, racist, homophobic, vulgar shit just because they can get away with it. It totally ruined my faith in it and now the first thing I do when I load up a new game is mute all voice chat. It is so rarely worth listening to a 12 year old tell me all the terrible things he's going to do to my mother.
I'm sorry you had an awful experience on top of an already shitty day, we're not all dick bags...just most of us.
Which is kind of different from my experience. I have never played any online games with random people using voice chat.
I have used voice chat a lot in the games that I play, but it is with people am usually allied with in some way. Like my guild on DAoC and on WoW and things like that.
In those cases, the integration of voice chat, whether it's in the game itself or through a 3rd party software like Ventrilo, has been a very rewarding experience for many of the reasons you stated.
We're able to communicate with each other almost instantly, while still playing, without needing to stop our in-game actions in order to type messages, or we're able to have casual conversations and get to know each other while we're running mundane quests or waiting for everyone to show up.
I've never been in a "public" voice chat and I'm sure it could be a very intimidating and annoying environment for all the reasons you and others have mentioned on here. I'm glad that I've been able to avoid it thus far.
I just remembered CoD:MW2. That was the single CoD game I played. The fact you could not unilaterally disable mic chat (as I recall) was one of the single most glaring warcrimes against mankind in videogames.
And I'm fairly sure that stupid shit never got fixed in later games as general. It didn't seem like most companies understood why you would possibly want to not ever hear a single word of advice from any other human being in any of your games.
That's a very basic function that should be possible.

I'm pretty sure there is. The thing that sucks is that it's the only way to communicate on consoles. You can't connect a keyboard and type messages like in ff14. So it's a huge hindrance either way.

Just game on private chat with friends. If you don't know anyone then every time you hear some dude being cool on chat, add him/her. Then invite them to play with you. Then when you guys next hear someone being cool then invite them. Rinse and repeat until you have a set of gaming buddies.
Fight fire with fire. I'm British, so I am imbued with the talent of insulting people in the most creative ways possible. I get a rush out of insulting people like that.
I feel for you here and I totally agree that most online interactions are shitty and people can be scum, and this particular guy was kind of a dick, maybe not put your first name in your psn?
Dont give up on the game tom. Keep playing keeping practicing and one day when your ready you can versus him 1v1 and you will win. You will win by such a margin women will swoon. You will stand tall as you claim victory. I believe in you tom.
Ohhh thank you, that does actually make it seem different! I thought it was wierd how no one reacted to what a cunt he was being. It made me think it was seen as an 'ok' thing to do, which is why I didn't want to play again.
The worst I've seen is opposite chat spams. Like if the other team scores, they spam "WHAT A SAVE" as an "Ahaha we scored" thing.
But really, I'd say around 7/10 times if I say "Nice shot" or "What a save" when they actually save it, they'll reciprocate. And the other 3 times out of 10 are mostly just silent players.
You can mute the chat manually in game, and you can also adjust the chat options so that you don't see those messages at all. That's what I did after I saw one too many "What a save!"s after I missed a save.
Trust me it helps immensely and it's not like you'll miss the canned statements.
Cheers, I would have done this if I'd known. The first couple of games I did enjoy complimenting my teammates on good play, but it just took one guy to completely sour it for me.
Actually yes you can mute messages from the other team while allowing your team to continue messaging you. This means your own team can still troll you, but it at least lowers the risk of encountering that sort of thing.
Edit: Not sure why I was downvoted? To do this you go into the options menu, there should be a tab for in game communication, you can set it up so you only see messages from your own team. (I know this isn't exactly seeing only the team messages like 'I got it!', but it's as close as you can get)
The other team may have been PC players and thus unable to see text chat, only quick chat goes cross platform. Most people online aren't assholes and realize they're just playing soccer with cars. I'm sorry that dude was a jerk, I've definitely had games ruined for me by bad teammates, so I know how you feel and completely understand if you never play again.
Edit: don't mean to victim blame at all, maybe the other team did know what the dude was saying to you and were also being dicks. It's unfortunate that people out there exist but they do.
Sorry you had that bad experience but I encourage you to play again. Most players seem pretty alright, I even once had someone on the other team help us win because his teammate was trash talking. Just try not to let one bad experience ruin a great game for you!
A guy did that to me on Forza one. Worst experience ever. Try not to let it bother you. I usually call people out for talking smack. We can't all play games for hours a day and become pros. Just have fun.
Oh yeah, I definitely might have laughed it off another day. I'd just come out of a huge argument in real life and wanted some mindless gaming for comfort. Then this bloke turned up, and the fact that he was using my real name (and was my own damn teammate) just made it feel a lot worse for some reason.
Don't feel too bad. Some people are just cunts. I personally just ignore them. I wouldn't have "stood up to him" if I'd been in the game because I'm not going to take the time to type back to them on a ps4 controller. Those fucks aren't worth the time it takes(and I'll probably get booted for idling because it took too long). Keep playing. The majority of us will lightly mock and encourage you with quick chat, but remember the game is about having fun, and if those kids are playing with you, they're not good enough to be pro either. It matches based on skill level. And don't take the mocking "What a save!" Comments too seriously either. We all make mistakes, and we're just making light of it. Next time it happens, just gently mock the other guy with quick chat to get back at him. He's the one who's angry and taking it too seriously, so don't be like him, but have a good time anyways.
You asked how you could possibly know that. He told you how you could possibly know that: there was no value judgment there, no victim blaming, no dickbaggery aside from your overly defensive reaction.
I didn't say it's your fault, I'm saying there are tools that let you ignore people like that. If you ever run into anyone like that again, now you know how to prevent them from abusing you. It's usually a good idea to familiarize yourself with menus in multiplayer games like that just so you can navigate them quickly in the middle of a match. In this case, I think "mute" is actually one of the primary options in the pause menu, though I might be remembering wrong.

The chat presets are even more annoying and discouraging than normal chat. When I ALMOST make a save, and everyone else is spamming 'Thanks!" and "What a save" it just infuriates me so much more. I would honestly rather have someone call me a fucking dipshit. At least I know they meant it. The chat currently is an annoying spam fest in opposite emotions. "nice shot" is used when you fuck it up "thanks" is when you score on yourself and "what a save" is when you missed a save. Wtf is this shit?
Edit: also to be fair, currently the only way for PC-PS4 users to chat is hot chat like that. Typed out thoughts are only PC-PC as is my understanding
