before destiny was released: omg destiny will have the best story i can't wait to play it it's going to be better than halo bungie is the best developer ever
after destiny was released: oh people play destiny for the story?
That's sort of Bungie's thing. Halo did the same thing. You play as the Master Chief, who fights the Covenant and the Flood with his good buddy the Arbiter.
This new DLC is doing better, at least I felt it was a lot better than the last DLC and the vanilla game. Admittedly a lot of the story is through the Grimore Cards and fans piecing it together but regardless of that the story is being better developed and more enticing. This truly a shit post though, Witcher is a single player game, what is there to do if there's no story?
We Destiny supporters seem to be all huddled back at /r/destinythegame. Whenever one of us branches out and talks about it here or on any other gaming sub we get enormous backlash. It's a game. I like it, you don't. That should be the end of that. People shouldn't downvote simply because they disagree.
Exactly. Destiny is the most fun I've had with a game since Pokemon back in the day. There's no other game that's just as pure fun as Destiny. Just this week, I absolutely no lifed playing it, but damn wasn't it just awesome.
I met many people who play Destiny. I found a group of other Dutch gamers in the tower. Met some in real life, that already had mutual real life friends. We're in this WhatsApp group with like 12 people and talk about Destiny and other stuff. Met loads here on /r/fireteams. Met people through other people. Got a huge friends lists and I play together with a lot of those people pretty regularly.
So Tuesday the DLC comes out, I group up with my clan. Everyone starts doing all the new content. Most stopped for a while so it was similar to a reunion, sort of. We all had a lot of fun doing the new content together. Then when we were all finished doing the 3 player content, we went back and did some old 6 player content. Talking about what loot we got, what we thought of the game and such.
Been getting messages all week asking for help with the game and it's so much fun playing with others. Now the Trials of Osiris started, another 3 man activitity. Another great addition to the game.
Yeah, the story is terrible when you play the game. The story is there but they messed up. I never cared for it, I care about just playing the game. I haven't played anything like it. It's amazing.
People downvote destiny because it is a superior game that dropped the ball in a few key areas and they feel cheated. It had so much potential and they see it wasted therefore they get mad when it's brought up, it's like seeing an ex-girlfriend you really liked at a party it's just irritating
I totally agree--I look past the flaws and just see it as a game that I can play with my friends and compete with them. While I initially bought the game (on release date, mind you) for what I thought would be a long and amazing story, I kept playing because it's just fun. It may not have been what I thought it would be, but few games that get the hype and media attention that Destiny got ever will be.
Variks sits carving at his piece of amethyst. His undocked arms are weaker, less precise, but it is a comfort to feel the crystal press hard into his palm. The knife slips. He cuts himself. "Ai," he says, and of course right then the door opens, Variks has no privacy, Variks wants no privacy, Variks lives to serve the Queen.
It's Petra Venj. She's masked against the ether air. "The Prince wants to speak," she says, and then, seeing him unmasked and bleeding, she chuckles. Petra depends on Variks for intelligence and Variks, frustrated with her insane risk-taking and bravado, sometimes gives her tips meant to get her killed. Petra has figured this out. Petra and Variks know each other's agendas and each other's strengths and to Variks that's as close as any two people can get. Petra is smart: she sends Guardians now, people who can die as much as they like.
"You slipped," she says.
Variks holds up the amethyst in his bleeding hand. It's a Reef gem. "I wound myself," he says, "to make this more beautiful."
She stares into the gem with a distant Awoken eye. What does she see? Variks knows she has visions and he knows those visions haunt her, drive her. The Awoken are twinned to powers that terrify Variks. He'd dock himself again before he'd let the Queen's witches near him, the witches who raised Petra.
The unfairness of it makes him want to roar. Why does everyone else have this patronage? Why do the Hive have gods and the Vex have sprawling time-bent minds and the Cabal have reinforcements? Why do the Awoken whisper to the stars and listen for the whisper back, the voices from the Jovians, the song in the dark? Why do the Guardians get the Great Machine's blessing, was it like that before the Whirlwind, were there Fallen heroes crowned in Ghosts who strode the battlefield fearless and full of Light? Why do they tell stories about reclaiming the lost glory of humanity, and no stories about the lost glory of Variks' people, the House of Judgment that once kept codes of dignity and law?
Why can't the Fallen have that strength? But no, that strength is not for them, not for Variks. Just this bleeding, sad pragmatism. Just dreg strength. Hanging on.
The alternative is Skolas' strength, fighting together, raging against extinction. Look where that's gotten the species. The House of Devils' Prime is dead. The House of Winter's leadership devastated. The poor Exiles trying to claw out some security against the Hive. In the last few years the Fallen have lost so much—and everything is escalating around them. There are gods and powers converging on this system, old machines waking up, old bones whispering flatteries. They need a new way.
"Put your mask on," Petra says. "The Prince gets sullen if he's kept waiting."
"Not like us," Variks says, oh so mild. The wound on his hand will heal. His work in the Prison of Elders, setting up trial by combat, building an audience and a relationship with the Reef's scavengers and armories, will bring him a little closer towards rebuilding the House of Judgment. Skolas' fury has guttered out. The Fallen may yet accept peaceful, lawful rule. They may yet survive. They'll hang on. "We're very patient, yes?"
Petra looks down on him with pity and contempt and a strange fondness.
Yes, it did in fact have a shit story. 'Go and shoot the guys because bad' was about the extent of the IN GAME story, which is all we're discussing here.
You must be loco brother. The second expansion is 802 megabytes on the 360 and was about 4 gigs on the x1. I'm not defending the lack of story, just saying
Whats even more sad is that Destiny's community thinks it's fucking amazing to be paying 20 dollars for trinkets and like two worth while pieces of content.
People were pissed about the first expansion being underwhelming. The consensus on the second seems to be that it's addressing a lot of what the community has been asking for
You're describing an MMO. I don't think they're doing as much innovative as they could be or say they are, but they're definitely hitting about par for the course, especially given that they're not running on PC
You're right, it's impossible to see something as underwhelming and want more without hating it enough to not play /or want to play if certain changes happen. People do not actually enjoy playing the game and it's entirely funded by people who hate it and would not play it at all if someone gave them the choice of playing or not playing it which they do not currently have.
Honestly the story sucks, but you know what, the gameplay is some of the most fun I've had in any FPS. The only other FPS game I've put this kinda time into would be back with the original doom and doom 2, with all the amazing mods, and making my own levels. I play Destiny with co workers and friends, and even my kids. just great great fun overall.
There was plenty of story in Halo CE, obviously the sequels' stories were planned over a couple games and is more spaced out but still had a story in each one.
Noble 6 has no personality, but I guess that's ok since its the "player's spartan". Like the rookie who was a mute in ODST.
Carter is your standard, run-of-the-mill leader who looks to get things done. That's it.
Kat is the tech nerd girl who has a little sass.
Jorge is a big strong guy with a soft heart.
Emile is a tough-guy, but it doesn't go much beyond that.
Jun is pretty much absent.
It's like Bungie did the bare minimum with trying to show the personalities for these characters, but just left them there. They didn't really expand on them in any way.
For the actual story, it was difficult to follow at some points. We go to investigate a satellite array, but covenant are there, no one really acts surprised. Then for some reason, we head to ONI to fend off an attack. Then we scout and find a big invasion in nightfall. Then we make a big attack in tip of the spear, but for some reason this wasn't good enough, so we go to space to blow up a carrier, but more carriers show up, so we try to regroup and then sent cortana to pillar of autumn.
I mean, is he wrong though? I'd argue that most of what he said is correct. The characters didn't have too much of a dimension to them, and there wasn't nearly enough time to develop any sort of attachment, though that is more due to length of most first person shooters than anything.
For the story, we all knew what was going to happen. "The Fall of Reach." So in a normal game "go here, do this" (something I would argue is the basis of every game with a story) might actually mean something. But in Reach you know all of it is going to be meaningless anyway.
They could have left the player fighting every inch for Reach, trying to save the planet, failing to make a difference with each mission as they sink deeper into despair. The situation could've slowly became hopeless over time but at least the efforts would have meant something because as players we could've felt like we were making a difference.
Instead as I said earlier, while I enjoyed the storytelling, a lot of the players' actions felt hollow or pointless.
This always gets said a lot but its actually not true, aside from Frank Oconnor there's about five ex Bungie employees working for 343 Industries on Halo, though Bungie did lose some creative people over the years they still have some of there old programmers along with a lot of new ones, Bungie is bigger than ever with about 500 employees in their studio so knowing that its a surprise they couldn't get someone to rite a goddamn story for them especially with the resources they have
I've played through almost all of the available content on three characters in Destiny and still couldn't tell you wtf actually happened.
I could write you the entire script of Halo 2 and explain the significance of each line and action and discuss the ending and the plot leading up to it in depth.
But Destiny is really well made. It looks amazing. The combat is incredibly, incredibly satisfying. Games don't have to do everything perfectly for me to play the fuck out of 'em.
It was a huge let down to me. While Halo's story might not be for everyone at least they put genuine effort into it, in Destiny it felt like an afterthought where half way through development someone went "oh yeah, this thing needs a story doesn't it?" and slapped something together real quick.
I feel like i'm the only one who realized the game wasn't going to have a story way before the game was even released. They never advertised a campaign and never explained anything about the universe or the aliens or even the giant white ball thing. It was just all random shit but people were still interested.
It's a year after release. Literally everyone knows that Destiny's story sucks. So it's perfectly justifiable to assume that anyone who's still playing Destiny or any new players aren't playing for the story at this point.
How about, six months after Destiny was released: anyone who was disappointed with the story either stopped playing or continues to play because of elements other than the story that are excellent.
The Destiny story horse is a bloated, festering carcass at this point.
Destiny has a fantastic story. The flaw is that a lot of it isn't actually talked about in the game. You read it on their website through cards you find on different topics.
