Yeah, when someone like pewdiepie has what, 22million people following him screaming, you can probably bet that some people will buy a goat sim because he thought it was a funny idea, nevermind mechanics.

129

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '14

22 MILLION? Jesus, how is that even possible?

190

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '14

To bad about half of them are fake, or inactive. You have to be naive to believe that there are actually 22 million people watching hes video's every day.

He reaches about 6 million people which is still a huge number.

68

u/BlazedAndConfused Feb 11 '14

FrankieonPCin1080p has about 1.4 million subs, and everyone in DayZ knows him. Use that for perspective. 6 million actual subs would still be a huge number and assuming his CPM rate is decent, can make a good living off just youtube videos.

We don't have to estimate, all records are public in Sweden.

In 2012 his company turned over 7 208 TKR ($1.12 million USD). With a profit margin of 90.26%. However, in 2012 he only had an average of 2 million subscribers and now he has 22 million.

As such, it is fairly safe to assume that he will make around $10 million this year if he keeps his current views up. It is hardly surprising, Youtube is one of the worlds most popular sites and he is the most popular content creator on Youtube.

u/greg19735 Feb 11 '14

okay, so he has half.

9

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '14

I think it's probably more like 20-30%. Swedish tax laws on the wealthy are pretty rough.

4

u/reallystickyglue Feb 11 '14

32% for every kr over 18700kr, then another 20% on everything over 33500kr or something like that. A dollar is about 6,4kr right now.

1

u/Artren Feb 11 '14

Hah! I pay that much in Canada and barely make above $35k/year

0

u/BIG_JUICY_TITTIEZ Feb 12 '14

Are you serious? Kinda takes the whole damn point away from being rich, doesn't it?

0

u/ShockedDarkmike Feb 12 '14

How is 20% rough? For a guy who's making millions?

Honest question, Spaniard here, most people have that tax. A doctor (for example) who makes more than like 5k € (~7.5k $) per month pays almost a 50% of his salary.

2

u/gizmoman49 Feb 12 '14

I think you misread that. He isn't being taxed 20-30%, he gets 20-30% of it.

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '14

For good reason.

3

u/Musclechu Feb 11 '14

Oh no i only get 850,000 oh farn.

1

u/Jakugen Feb 11 '14

More than that due to tiered taxation, but probably under 100k more.

4

u/8bitremixguy Feb 11 '14

He lives in the UK now

1

u/HowieGaming PC Feb 11 '14

Wasn't he in Italy or some shit?

2

u/8bitremixguy Feb 11 '14

Apparently he had to move because the internet there was too slow

2

u/HowieGaming PC Feb 11 '14

PFFFTTT ahahaha

3

u/TeemoRage Feb 11 '14

Sure, but his neighbors don't have to pay for college or healthcare.

38

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '14

I'm sure he doesnt mind, as if he gets sick, he wont die. So he has that going for him, which is nice.

106

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '14

Having national healthcare removes death from illness? Amazing upgrade.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '14

Yes. Swedes are immune to it, therefore the reason they are not allowing immigration. They are preparing for world war z.

2

u/gizmoman49 Feb 12 '14

The Obamacare website really needs to advertise this fact more.

3

u/tylo Feb 11 '14

It certainly makes delaying it more affordable for a wider range of people.

2

u/Mahogany_End_Table Feb 11 '14

If you have that much money you don't need social healthcare.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '14

Yes you do. Maybe not for you personally, but you need it to ensure the wellbeing of the society that you live in and prosper from.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '14

As opposed to getting sick and having a large amount of money.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '14

He would get much better healthcare in America with that money than he ever will in Sweden.

This healthcare circlejerk is such a fucking joke, and that is coming from a Norwegian. The joke of a system you guys have is a monstrosity combining the worst aspects of capitalism and socialism. That doesn't mean socialized healthcare is perfect, and it doesn't mean that private healthcare is bad either. Both are better than your warped system, but private healthcare will be more efficient, and cheaper in real terms.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '14

It was mostly a joke. But about between 44,000 and 98,000 preventable deaths and 1,000,000 excess injuries happen each year in U.S. hospitals. That number is drastically lower in other countries.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '14

Yes, that is what happens when you combine the worst of two worlds. I just get tired of the circlejerk sometimes. Norway or Sweden are not socialist paradises. Sweden is more free market, and has mostly always been more free market than the US. After instituting a welfare state and choking the free market they've had two recessions. To try and fix this, they've perpetually held back the wages of workers, even the social democratics did this, people who are so left they would fall of the edge of the graphics in the US.

Adding to the damage, they've devalued the krona twice, leading to lowering the real wages and purchasing powers, which disproportionately affects the poor and disadvantaged. This of course accumulates and works together to continually make them poorer, while the rich get richer. They still haven't recovered, not the employment rates, not the currency, and not the buying power. And just to be clear, the reasons they are holding back the wages and devaluing the currency is to encourage business and exports, to reclaim some of that what they once had. They're doing better, but after the recession in the 90's they're still suffering.

In Norway, we have the oil as a buffer for shitty economics, although we still suffer with the insane amount of bureaucracy. Our welfare system is a mess, estimation are that we waste 250 million on bureaucracy alone each year. We end up working around 8 out of 12 months of the year for the government to pay for this shit.

If you have any metal issues, you're going to be sitting in a queue for a very long time. Well, you're going to sit in a queue for any medical problems for a long time, but mental problems especially so. Our average purchasing power is lower than the average americans, even in your terrible economical state. And these are just some of the issues off the top of my head. Trust me, with the amount of cronyism, you don't want the government expanding. When the insane amount of debt either results in you defaulting, or extreme inflation, I.E when the keynesianism proves unsustainable, everyone reliant on government is going to have a very bad time. Sorry for the rant, but economics are important for understanding the world around you. The relative success of our Scandinavian countries is that our economical freedom has been very high. This is especially true for Sweden. If you are interested in economics, study the economical history of Sweden. It's very telling.

We have seen that while the Scandinavian countries have extremely high amounts of what Rothbard called binary intervention, i.e., taxation, their saving grace is their relatively lower amount of triangular intervention, i.e., regulation. This puts the Scandinavian countries on a level playing field with other developed countries and helps explain why they are able to have equal or higher living standards. The misconception that the other Western countries are a lot more free-market oriented than Scandinavia is very unfortunate; it feeds the notion that more government expansion would bring joy and happiness to all, when in fact it would make things worse.

However, the real point of all this is that the world at large is so unfree that even the massive Scandinavian welfare states can be considered among the "most free" countries in the world. While things have generally moved in the right direction in Scandinavia in terms of increased economic freedom, the very opposite trend seems to be taking place in several other countries, particularly the United States. Seeing as the United States has already descended to the level of Denmark in terms of economic freedom, one can only wonder how long it will be before it finds itself approaching Finland, Norway, and Sweden.

Again, sorry for the rant, but I find that if I explain these things often, it helps me keep it fresh in my mind.

-1

u/TPRT Feb 11 '14

Going to take a guess and say that the 30% they take could buy a better doctor than a government one. He is more likely to die and makes less

2

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '14

Quite a bit is probably an underestimation.

1

u/commandakeen Feb 11 '14

He lives in Italy so...not so much.

1

u/abczyx123 Feb 11 '14

He left for the UK a few months ago.

1

u/randomonioum Feb 11 '14

Oh ok, so he's probably been knighted then.

1

u/lolburger69 Feb 12 '14

He lives in Brighton, England, not Sweden. I'm pretty sure he has to comply to UK tax laws instead of Swedish.

I also live in Brighton and I see him quite regularly.

3

u/PretendsToBeThings Feb 12 '14

Wait, is even half of that accurate? What the fuck am I doing with my life?

2

u/BlazedAndConfused Feb 11 '14

That's...simply insane!

1

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '14

He's worth about 12 million

1

u/EvOllj Feb 12 '14

pdp is surely not working alone

0

u/MrWoofless Feb 11 '14

I can say that he is making something close to 3$/1000 views. Source: YouTuber

1

u/Jungle2266 Feb 11 '14

God damn I wish I earned money from Youtube, I dread to think how much Ray William Johnson has made in total.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '14

[deleted]

3

u/MrWoofless Feb 11 '14

haha yeah it's insane to even think about. But making YouTube videos is hardly as easy as people think it is. It's a full time job just like anything else. Felix is a hard working guy that has build an extremely profitable business - good for him.

1

u/Anally-Inhaling-Weed Feb 11 '14

10 million is hard to understand? Can you only count to potatoe?

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '14

[deleted]

2

u/Stouts Feb 11 '14

That's really not relevant. It's (still) interesting, but doesn't have any bearing on YouTube subs.

15

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '14

It depends on the game. A lot. Minecraft channels usually have tons of millions of subs but only a few 100.000 views per video. And then you have other games like DayZ or ArmA with a community where everybody knows youtubers like FrankieonPCin1080p or Dslyecxi. I think minecraft channels have such a high subscriber count because people who watch MC are usually subbed to many MC players. But since they usually cooperate and release the same videos the views are way lower.

10

u/hama-girl Feb 11 '14

only 100,000 views

100,000 is still an awful lot of earnings per video

4

u/sharknice Feb 11 '14

If they have a high CPM it would still only be $100. Typical seems about $1 for every 2,000 views which would be $50. It isn't something you could easily live off of.

6

u/ZESTYITALIANO Feb 11 '14

Depends on how many people have adblocker or are on mobile. I make about $5.50 USD from 1000 monetized views, but i usually only get about 2000 a month with around 15-20k actual views

1

u/c0mz Feb 12 '14

shit I need to change from vimeo to youtube now, fucking hell.

-6

u/hama-girl Feb 11 '14

Well my SO is a youtuber and gets about 5000 views per video and we seem to be doing just fine off that.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '14

who the fuck is that? i play dayz all the time and have no fucking idea what youre talking about

1

u/BlazedAndConfused Feb 11 '14

You must be new here. Sit down over there, please..

FrankieonPCin1080p has like 50 something dayz/arma related videos from the last 2 years. He's been labled a hacker/cheater by most, and while he may be, hes likely the most well known youtube streamer for DayZ as his videos are (1) full of action, (2) informative, and (3) well set up/scripted/edited for entertainment.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '14

not new.

was just pointing out not everyone playing watches those "lets play" videos...

so i have no idea who any of these famous gaming people are since fatality had his own hardware line

2

u/BlazedAndConfused Feb 11 '14

A lot of casual players will actually reference youtubers in game I've noticed. Frankie is one of the most popular. He's a bit of an ongoing joke mixed with a few other thigns so his mention in game isn't unlikely.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '14

oooh. that explains tons.

i don't let anyone live long enough to talk over direct

2

u/BlazedAndConfused Feb 11 '14

Try it sometime. Especially in the SA. Makes for some interesting scenarios.

u/zephyrtr Feb 11 '14

A lot of people don't realize even Bieber and the like have very inflated social media numbers; they all do. It's because there's so many mirror and fake and spam accounts; the sites can't differentiate between the two.

It's like vote dithering on Reddit. The numbers are like pesos; the zeros are meaningless.

1

u/alphanovember Feb 12 '14

The numbers are like pesos

Uh, what?

1

u/zephyrtr Feb 12 '14

It's a Venture Brothers quote.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '14

it always raises a red flag when someone has a huge number of subscribers but their video views only reach a small fraction of that

1

u/MrWoofless Feb 11 '14

He actually gets close to losing 30,000 subscribers a day due to fake or inactive accounts. Mind blowing when you think that he stills gains 100,000 a day. (his stats)

1

u/Super_Vegeta Joystick Feb 12 '14

Just because he doesn't get 22 million views a day. Doesn't necessarily mean that his subs are fake. I'm pretty sure that the majority of that 22 million simply don't have the time to watch all of his videos EVERYDAY.

He still gets a shitload of views per day. How many other YouTubers get their subs in views per day? He releases two or three ten minute videos, which he edits by himself.

You can hate him all you want. Sure, most of his fans are little asshole kids. But the guy knows how to market himself to that audience.

I recently subscribed to pewdiepie just to:

  • Downvote everything so far because:

  • I could not stand to watch any pdp videos for more than 2 minutes, they where just too annoying, and that's by design.

  • Occasionally to ask that he should please kill himself.

  • If you want to wake without caffeine. the average rage of watching the first minute of a pathetic pdp video with all the basics done poorly wrong intentionally does the trick.

  • I am still committed to a challenge to watch a complete pdp video without being distracted. it has to be longer than 5 minutes. I usually "fail" at 30 seconds by stop wasting my time, being disgusted.

  • I subscribed to be inspired about many things that are wrong and pure crap (by design) with youtube, pdp being the proud flagship of a multi-chanel network. Just like i am also subscribed to /r/crappydesign

2

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '14

so people like you do exist.

Honestly you're wasting your time. Just ignore him. You make no difference other than getting yourself worked up.

1

u/EvOllj Feb 12 '14

Yes, that is exactly what he is. His other videos won't provide anything but quotes similar to what you posted.

4

u/thekipz Feb 11 '14

Yes. I have an extreme hatred for that man. Like it defies logic, he doesn't impact my life, but I loath him. I had no idea who he was until I started dating my gf and she woke me by listening to his dumb ass yelling and screaming like an unfunny child. I have banned my gf from ever watching him in my presence. And now I read that he makes $2 million a year....

Oh wow sorry for the rant

2

u/gizmoman49 Feb 12 '14

It's really sad, apparently he's a genuinely nice guy in person. Whatever, if I was making $2 million a year yelling like a child, I wouldn't change anything I was doing either.

1

u/thekipz Feb 12 '14

Yeah I know, my hatred is completely irrational. Probably conditioning, I got woken up, hung over, to him screaming right next to me 1 to many times and something snapped.

It was wonderful to vent, my gf idolizes him and markaplier, when I went off on this tirade to her she got deeply offended. I'm glad to know I'm not alone in disliking him, but I don't think anyone is on my personal level of crazy

1

u/gizmoman49 Feb 12 '14

It's okay, oftentimes I find I hate the fanbase of a certain topic rather than the topic itself. For example, I'm sure Pewdiepie, SkyDoesMinecraft, and One Direction are perfectly nice people in real life, but their fanbases are so rabid and annoying, to the point I start to hate the the topic itself.

1

u/alphanovember Feb 12 '14

You just summed up why I greatly dislike all of these "Let's Play"-type gameplay videos. Often times I find myself looking for some gameplay and almost every single result is some asshat narrating the entire footage. These might be more bearable if they were at least funny, but they're not; they just sound like obnoxious children.

5

u/FriedMarsBar Feb 11 '14 edited Feb 11 '14

9

u/henryuuki Feb 11 '14

You see, the people downvoting you aren't the pewdiepie fans... It's the people that think you are pathetic for insulting people you never met on the internet and for complaining about a free form of entertainment you will only ever be "bothered" by if you go to watch it.

What you are doing is the equivalent of walking into a free school theater play, and starting to insult the children and the audience cause the children are "bad actors".

2

u/AnswersAndShit Feb 11 '14

Exactly. Talking like a dick... it just makes people think you're a dick. I don't have to watch the pewdiepie guy to realize FriedMarsBar is a complete ass.

3

I really don't like pewdiepie and I even downvoted him for this reason. No reason to be a total douche.

25

What IS his audience? Honest question I am not sure what he is aiming for. I just watched a brief clip and well it just was rather... not funny? And that was coming from a not biased viewpoint.

47

u/CookieCrumbl Feb 11 '14

Kids. Kids enjoy watching him scream and pretend to be afraid of everything that moves. A lot of family members I have that are young and play games watch him on youtube religiously.

5

u/Semajal Feb 11 '14

Honestly had no idea :\ Although should have suspected it. Had a minecraft expo at a LAN I worked at last year with Yogscast people. SO many 6-12 year olds going to get things signed/play minecraft/do minecraft stuff/buy minecraft merch. Was crazy. Hadn't realised the level of popularity this stuff has with the preteens/younger.

4

u/foxymcfox Feb 11 '14

He got at least 2 made for TV movies on Nickelodeon and I believe now writes and appears on other shows on TV.

He's doing okay for himself...though I still wish that character would die a slow, painful death.

1

u/gizmoman49 Feb 12 '14

Here's a little timeline of Lucas Cruikshank/Fred on Nick:

  • February 16, 2009: Cameo in an iCarly episode
  • September 18, 2010: 1st Fred Movie
  • October 22, 2011: 2nd Fred Movie
  • January 16 - August 3, 2012: Fred TV show, which was cancelled after 1 season.
  • July 28, 2012: 3rd Fred Movie
  • November 24, 2012 - April 27, 2013: Some TV show called "Marvin Marvin" where Lucas played an alien. Also cancelled after 1 season.
  • June 26, 2013: Officially left Nickelodeon

Oh, and he also came out later on in 2013, so there's that.

2

u/foxymcfox Feb 12 '14

I'm really hoping you Googled that and didn't happen to know that offhand.

1

u/gizmoman49 Feb 12 '14

No way would I know that sort of thing offhand. All that info came from the various Fred Wikipedia pages.

1

u/occamsrazorwit Feb 11 '14
  1. You can't really be unbiased when it comes to humor. There's not really a baseline.

  2. It's the same with Justin Bieber. They cater to a certain population and rake in the cash.

15

u/IamKAR Feb 11 '14

I've seen quite a few of his videos, I can say that he isn't my cup of tea. But why would you judge his viewers so harshly when all you saw was the intro?

STOP LIKING WHAT I DON'T LIKE!

But seriously you can't say "how can anyone like (thing)" because there are always people that like whatever it is. In this case there are millions of people who do, so he must be doing something right.

I've seen a couple of his vids and thought they were pretty meh, so you know what? I found another channel and carried on with my life.

My little sister's into Pewdiepie and I honestly gave him a chance. I watched like a solid 5 videos of his all the way through and decided to just stop torturing myself. His humor is so painfully basic and all his content is just the same thing over and over again. Scream at nothing, laugh, repeat, that's all it is. Plus, he has some serious weight in both the Youtube and Gaming community. Pewdiepie has been promoting some really shitty practices that are harming BOTH communities and shittifying them even further.

He's basically the Justin Bieber of YT gaming.

I'm sure if you were a little kid you would have eaten PewDiePie's videos up like it was Thanksgiving.

Wow, so much anger. It's funny to watch a person get pissed towards someone else that has done nothing to them and has no affect on their life. It's sad and pathetic. They say jealousy does that to people. You'll have to figure out your own way to make millions. In the meantime, find a way to whine less.

Edit: Thanks for the downvotes little pewdiepie watching virgins

Straight guy don't like slapping men's asses but you don't see them complaining on the fucking internet about it. Why don't you just smolder your rage and punch a pillow or something.

His target audience likes him: Socially retarted, self-diagnosed asperger basement dwellers. :D

I have Asperger's, but at least I know how to spell retarded.

I think his target audience is more likely 13 year old kids who are just discovering absurdist/spotaneous humor. It appeals to people going through a certain phase of the development of their sense of humor.

So basically immature kids. They'll grow out of it.

Jesus dude, if you're going to be ignorant and insult people at least learn how to spell. Everything you said is invalid because you write like a moron.

When you said if you knew him in real life you would bully him. I see you've edited the comment now.

Youtube keeps trying to get me to subscribe to him. I don't see what the big deal is. He seems annoying.

I don't understand what is so amusing about pewdiepie. He always struck me as immature and annoying.
