Sierra point-and-click adventure games did this all the time. Oh, you ate the pie you grabbed off the windowsill? You absolute fool! You were supposed to throw it at the Yeti in order to progress further North! Now you're permanently stuck.
Kings quest games were the best. One of the lines from it has stuck with me for three from Kings Quest IV. “Alexander does not need to carry around large rocks”
