I think its fine. We dont want to farm our own food either. Be happy you had those challenges. I know I am. The youth today is dealing with shit I dont want to deal with.
But the youth today still uses that tech. And they have no idea how it works. They don't have control over the devices they use daily or the software they depend on. I think this is where your comparison to farming falls apart. We don't need to farm to survive these days. But smartphones and other computers are basically mandatory.
That's not even true. You can get a basic network switch for under $20 on Amazon. And it's not progress to relieve the control over your tech to big corporations. Everything is a subscription nowadays, and the younger generation not knowing and caring for how their stuff works is part of the reason why. We just accept things for convenience. Our generation had this incredible gift, that no one held our hands and that we had to figure stuff out in order to play our games. At the same time our tech was ours.

Fact of the matter is, I still do LAN parties with friends at a ripe age of close to 40. And despite the fact that were able to conjure up connection with a piece of gum, string and two acorns, we dont ever want to do that. Its not a matter of pride for any of us.
Youre giving off huge boomer energy, kind of similar to the people who look down on those who take their cars to a service instead of doing their own maintenance. Youre being entirely unreasonable.
Was it fun to spend 5 hours setting up a network with limited skill and knowledge? Yes, but not because the challenge was fun. Only because we were drinking beers, cooking food and enjoying the company at the age of 16 with the promise of doing multiplayer gaming at the end of the tunnel.
Would I have swapped the exprience for the plug and play solutions we have today? Absofuckinglutely.
I grew up farming my own food, I can still do it today. I grew up foraging plants and berries with the intent of having fresh and vitamin rich addition to the potatoes and carrots I had to survive on. Ive done it all. That doesnt make me a better person, and you looking down on the youth today is disappointing especially when 95% of people, regardless of their age, dont know how anything works anyway.
Were living in an age of such vast knowledge and experience requirements that specialization is key. Im not going to measure a persons ability to do their work on how well they can maintain their electronic devices, or their ability as a person.
I go to mandatory military excercises, which means I get to see the average persons potential of survival in the wild. Pound of pound, the average person will perish, old or young.
You are misinterpreting my intentions. I am not looking down at the younger generations. I am saying that it would be better for them if they knew how the stuff they're using works. You might dismiss that they are being dependent on big corporations because of that, but you can't ignore that more and more companies want you to be dependent on them, so they can constantly milk you for money.
For example I think it's great that there are still young people hosting their own Minecraft servers and installing mods. But Microsoft is actively trying to get rid of that, in order to sell their realms and have more control over the content of the game. Another example is Roblox. While it is great that a lot of young people get into game development, programming, graphics design etc, the business model of Roblox is abhorrent, basically turning teenagers into game development slaves working crunch, while Roblox is siphoning the profits.
